I'm not making a legal argument. Nor am I claiming that sharing or downloading bootlegs is morally right. But on the spectrum of bad things that a person can do, downloading an album that will never be available for legal purchase is pretty far down on the list. If acquiring or listening to bootlegs makes you a bad person, then almost every Prince fan who was alive when the Black Album first leaked falls into that category. If you waited until 1994 to hear it, good for you, but you are in a tiny minority.

I would definitely agree that if it's something unreleased, then it's a different story. It may still be a crime, and it may be wrong, but at least there is no legal opportunity to purchase it. Seems less like stealing and more like eavesdropping.

If it's a proper album that is available for purchase, then there is simply no excuse for downloading illegally. That is stealing.

it's not far down on the list to the person who created the music.

we have actually heard from the authors of the vault, and they have personally stated that they would prefer folks not steal their copyrighted material. this should give us all some insight as to how these people, real human beings, feel.
