Jesse Johnsons Revue and Mazarati are 2 of my favs ever. For the folks who can remember, how big was Jesse during that time? Was he playing decent sized stadiums or clubs?

Also I can't find many print interviews on Jesse or Maz did they do press much back in the day?

Funk/soul guitarist Jesse Johnson and music legend Sly Stone duet on this ultra-tight groove. Johnson wrote and produced "Crazay," a bumpin' synth-laden funk track. He crafted the perfect groove in which to showcase Sly's soulful voice. The multitalented funk pioneer really shines here, and it's cool to see him back in his element doing his thing. The track also has a great synthesizer intro and a funky slap bass line. It's a high-energy groove that has a joyful, celebratory vibe.

The video for the song is also top-flight. It's filled with infectious energy and bright psychedelic colors, giving it kind of a 1960s Haight-Ashbury flavor. And Sly and Jesse both look like they're having a blast. When the song was released back in 1986, I thought Sly was due for a big comeback, because he was really on his game here. Unfortunately, the big comeback never materialized but still a very cool track and video. Anyway, comeback are not, Sly was the guiding force behind one of the most influential bands in the history of popular music and a true music innovator.

"Crazay" was the first single from Johnson's sophomore album Shockadelica (1986). The track did quite well on the charts, rising all the way to #2 on the R&B charts and #53 on the pop charts. Jesse Johnson is one of the most talented artists to come out of the Minneapolis music scene spearheaded by Prince back in the 1980s. Johnson's a talented songwriter and highly gifted guitarist. He was the lead guitarist and primary songwriter for The Time. His Shockadelica album is a terrific collection of songs, and it showcases his gifts as a musician and songwriter. He wrote, produced and arranged all the tracks on the album.

High School Pals to Reunite to Rock

The big time beckoned Casey Terry through a note on his mother's doorstep.

And the singer, known publicly as Sir Casey Terry--front man for Mazarati, the latest pop-funk outfit from Prince's Minneapolis-based Paisley Park camp--almost didn't take the offer.

The note was from Mark Brown, bassist in Prince's band, Revolution. Terry had played in a band with Brown at Minneapolis' Central High School, and, he explained, "We had a pact that if one of us made it, all of us would."

Brown made it first, hooking up with Prince's band in 1980 as a replacement forAndre Cymone.And he didn't forget his promise.

"He really had to track me down for a couple of months," Terry said. "I was out on the road with a rock group called Wire, so I wasn't the easiest guy to find. He just left this note on my mother's doorstep that said, 'Casey, I'm gonna make you a star. Call me and let's get something together.'

"I thought it was a hoax at first. Then one day I said, 'Well, I'll call him up,' and the next week we were in a studio banging away at stuff."

The duo spent a year working on songs for Mazarati and then Terry went to work putting together the band, auditioning local talent and stealing from other Minneapolis bands--bassist Romeo, keyboardist Aaron (Ace) Paul Keith, guitarist Craig (Screamer) Powell and drummer Kevin (Blondie) Patricks--and recruiting a couple of out-of-towners he met at a local club, guitarist Tony Christian and keyboardist Marr Starr.

Mazarati recently released its debut album.

From the start, the group was determined not to be just another band from Minneapolis' fertile music scene. Rather than rent a plush rehearsal hall, for instance, they set up shop in the dank, windowless basement of a warehouse once used as a hideout by gangster Al Capone, "sharing a bag of Cheetos and letting each guy in the band have two sips from a can of pop."

Terry and his mates still rehearse in "the dungeon," though its been customized to provide a more comfortable creative environment.

And their look--whether it was the lace and torn jeans of their early days or the paisley jumpsuits they now sport--became what they'd wear on the streets as well.

"That's just the way we are," Terry explained. "A lot of people dress differently for the stage; we don't."

If Mazarati can drive this new album to the top of the charts and use it as a springboard for a high-mileage career, they will have accomplished something most of the other spinoffs from the Purple Court failed to do.

But, Casey said, there's no worry about an early demise for Mazarati. "This group was together for four years prior to the record deal," he said. "We're already a family." " he said. "We're already a family."

Prince, Andre Cymone & BrownMark guest on stage with Mazarati at St. Paul Winter Carnival's Fun Fair. They jammed 4 15 min on America and the Dance Electric.

I remember at the beginning of 1986,there were tentative plans for a "Paisley Park Revue" tour,with headliner Sheila E. touring with Mazarati and The Family.I remember getting excited about it,but the tour never happened,ostensibly because The Family broke up very soon after their album was released.Does anyone remember hearing about this tour?

I'm reading thru something, now to see if I can get info on it. I did hear of that via other fans

That would have been a hot show, Since Sheila is doing shows with FDeluxe now, she should call up Mazarati

Wally Safford & Gregory Brooks along with Mico Weaver were supposed to be a part of the Family line up

4 Sheila's next album period Cat Glover was 2 be a part of her show

Shockadelica is a masterpiece.It's Jesse's best album.My favorites are "Addiction","Do Yourself A Favor","She (I Can't Resist)","Tonight" and "Burn You Up".

I don't think "Baby Let's Kiss" should have been the third single.It's an OK song,but I would have chosen "Addiction" or "Burn You Up".Those songs are hotter!

How do you feel about Jesse Johnson leaving the Time? Have you heard his album, and if so, what do you think of it?

Jesse and Morris and Jerome and Jimmy and Terry had the makings of one of the greatest R&B bands in history. I could be a little pretentious in saying that, but it's truly the way I feel. There's no one that could wreck a house like they could. I was a bit troubled by their demise, but like I said before, it's important that one's happy first and foremost. And, as far as Jesse's record goes, chocolate. You know.

It is absolutely similar. Basically Jesse ripped Prince off his arrangements as a retaliation for Prince taking his credit off a couple of songs in 1984, this with Pepe Willie's blessing. Princevault claims that because a few Prince-written lyrics are missing Jesse's version is not considered to have any input by Prince but this is a delirious statement, as the track is a copycat of Prince's version, and bears little resemblance to the later released original version by 94 East (If You See Me).

For the record, an extended version was released on a maxi, which is really cool (and distances itself from Prince's version by adding portions that are Jesse's creation).
