Captain, Captain. You're my main man. We genuinely bonded over our inexplicable love of "The Morning After." However, you do need to be slapped. "Gigolos Get Lonely Too" and "I Don't Wanna Leave You" are the two most skippable tracks on What Time is It? More skippable than "Onedayi'mgonnabesomebody?" I'm not a religious man but I am going to do some sincere praying for you.

Hasn't Prince just received the masters to this recently? And I knew immediately it was Prince involved from the very first note back then..Also whoever is playing the instruments is spot on. Cool review, just got up to the second album.
Listening to you guys discussing the groupies and band chatter on Wild & Loose was interesting - that's one of my favourite parts, it's hilarious and totally Prince's/The Time humour.
The transcribe is here btw, it's kind of difficult to hear both, especially the band, the girls I can personally pick up a lot easier: http://www.dtt-lyrics.com....html#wild

You guys are right about the ballads btw.
Morris just doesn't have the vocals for them, they're kinda in character that this dirty ol' pimp would be trying to serenade the ladies (and sound terrible?!) - but for the album they're too long for their purpose. It's not like with a Prince vocal they would be a Do Me, Baby or International Lover - I think Prince knew they were needed for the flow and purpose of the LP, but didn't put much thought or energy into them given what the end result would sound like.
Having said that - I don't dislike them, and I'm the biggest fan of 3x2=6 you will ever find, so I appreciate a ballad done by a less than average vocalist!

ahhhh I had a great TIME listening to your TIME podcast! I find it funny to hear the "complaining" about all of the chants. The group chants and call & responses are totally a part of the Time thing. Just like funky grooves or Morris's attitude or the Stacy Adams! attempts at funky tunes immitating the group chants, we would say we were doing "The Time chant-thing". Or when Prince brought it back for the end of Lolita, everyone said he's doing a Time-like call-and-response. I'm not saying they (Prince) invented the group chant or call-and-response, but it was definately part of The Time sound from the beginning, hence all of the chants! I always dug all of the chanting.
I also never felt the ballads were too out of place as Morris's character is pimpy and off-putting, but he also fancys himself as an ultimate lady killer, so of course he's going to try to be seductive. The title "Giggilos Get Lonely Too" says it all! Anyway, just the way I always saw it, not that I am right or anything. I think Toejam was saying that on the first album Morris's character wasn't all the way developed, so that's why the ballads are sappier. I think that sounds on track. A song like GGLT fits in much better.
Oh yeah one thing surprised me. I think it was Captain or Player talking about the speaking part at the end of Wild & Loose being annoying because you couldn't quite hear what is being said. There was a comment along the lines of well why couldn't he have just mixed that part clearer so you could hear it. I think that the whole point of the way that part is set up is just that, so it's not an easy obvious listen. It takes an effort to listen to each side of the conversations and figure out what is going on in the scene. Some things are meant to stand out and be obvious, like the dialouge part (FUCKING HILARIOUS btw) at the end of The Walk, but the part at the end of W&L I always saw as mixed that way totally on purpose. So you have to do some investigative listening. Playing the song over again, listening to one side of the conversation at a time. It would be like saying: If he wanted us to hear what Wendy was saying in the backwards parts on "Girl" (Prince B-side of America), why didn't he just put the dialog on the right way? There is a funny dialog part like this on Frank Zappa's "Flower Punk" (We're Only In It For The Money album) where there are 2 seperate talking tracks playing in each side of the speakers while all kids of crazy sonic shit is going on in the background. You have to really listen to it a lot to pick up exactly what's being said on each side, then when you are putting it together you realize that the 2 dialog lines are related to each other. In the case of Wild & Loose you have the girls on one side taking about how cool the band is, and the guys on the other side talking about how they want to get some action. Then when she walks up to Morris, he blows her off cause she's not good lookin enough for him! Fucking hilarious! omg and the line "well you sure don't look like you sooouund" just made me laugh thinking about it Then of course the funny thing about the girls is they were just drooling over how cool The Time is, but the reaction to being blown off by Morris is: That's the worst concert I've ever been to! I always thought the dialog parts on The Time songs were really funny. I remember in the early 90's hearing dialog parts in songs that I thought were really lame in comparrison.
One other thing for me is that I Don't Want To Leave you is just a great song. I would agree that the lyrics don't fit as well with Morris's attitude, but it's just such a damn fine song and they pull it off really well. Especially that part "..let me hold you, I know I could/One night to hold you just ain't no gooood" nice nice nice! My man the Rev back in the day always said that the wierd bit at the fade was kind of percussive and symbolized a kind of pre-cursor to Sheila's stuff
Just some of my thoughts about thsese 2 awesome albums. I like how everyone was on board with The Stick. What a great groovin song that is! And the ending of the podcast was !!!!!!!
Great job guys! I've been very much looking forward to hearing you talking about some of Prince's side projects and I'm glad we got a track-by-track run down on these 2 fine albums.
Looking forward to whatever's next!

Exactly!
Also knowing that Prince created all that showed his sense of humor earlier on. Especially that italian accent he does at the end of "Wild & loose". Who would have thought besides me that it was Prince? No one. Because they always look at him as mean & serious...When he is actually funnier than Morris in real life & created the whole "Morris" character himself..U can hear that character earlier on in "Clorean Bacon Skin" & "Chocolate". Prince created that Morris voice earlier on that Morris took as his own... [Edited 9/14/12 13:48pm] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"!
