Sheila E.'s unreleased 1989 album (produced by Prince) On another thread, there is a great discussion going on about what happened to the Lovesexy Band when that tour/era was over.I knew that Sheila E. had been working with Prince on her fourth album throughout 1988,but she apparently didn't like the direction of the project and soon left Paisley Park Records.I found some info on that abandoned album (from Wikipedia). It seems like the project was completed and ready to go...what do you think?
Sheila E.: Untitled 1989 albumAn album was recorded by Sheila E., between early 1987 and late 1988, and planned for release in 1989. The album was abandoned when Sheila E. left Paisley Park Records in early 1989, and most of the album's tracks remain unreleased. The only track from the album to have been released is "Scarlet Pussy" (credited to Camille), which was included as the b-side of "I Wish U Heaven". The album included a cover of Donny Hathaway's "The Ghetto".Two other tracks were resurrected for later projects, however. In mid-September, 1993, "Latino Barbie Doll" was tried out for Mayte during initial sessions for her solo debut album, and was included on an initial configuration of the album, titled "Latino Barbie Doll", before being removed from later configurations as the album developed into Child of the Sun. During the A Celebration week in June, 2000, computer screens at Paisley Park Studios offered names of a selection of tracks which users could vote on for inclusion on Crystal Ball Volume II; "3 Nigs Watchin' a Kung Fu Movie" was included on the list and was chosen by fans, the project was ultimately abandoned. would Sheila really open up an album with a song called "2 Nigs Watchin' A Kung Fu Movie"??

Does anybody have the rest of this interview? I've only ever seen this first page.
And according to it, there was a time when Sheila was VERY excited about this album. But I guess she changed her mind subsequently.

This will likely surface someday. What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

It was allegedly a kind of sequel track to '2 Nigs United 4 West Compton'. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I remember this!! It's from a 1988 Black Beat magazine interview.Sheila was the cover story and she spoke excitedly about the next album.I assume she was referring to the Prince-produced album that was never released.Wish I still I had this issue.

I believe I have this in my scrapbook in it's entireity. Have to check when I get home. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

What makes you think so?

I was saying on another thread that the lack of Sheila E outtakes and bootleg tracks always amazed me. I figured when people were grabbing stuff and filling their knapsacks she'd be high on the list of things to get. 'Girl Power' is her only circulating boot after almost 30 years. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

^^I agree,it's surprising that alot of her outtakes haven't leaked.I'd love to hear those tracks from the cancelled 1988/89 album.

Considering how awful "Girl Power" is, I'm not surprised her outtakes were picked over.

'latino barbie doll' isn't what you'd call a very good song either.
however, 'scarlet pussy' surely is a great one.
i'd still like to hear this album, or have a copy, as a curiosa.
but i'd be more interested in jill's second album. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

In comparison Jill has more outtakes(with her vocals) circulating from her aborted disc than most proteges have period. Hell she even got a video out there for 'Boom Boom'. I just find it odd that of all the alleged versions of 'Latino Barbie Doll' that may have been recorded that someone opted to snag Mayte's version over Sheila's. Even Apollonia's version would've had more nostalgic value. and last year or early this year we also got "4 lust"

LOL this is very true | |

I regrettably have to agree. Love Shiela, but Girl Power is trash and Latino Barbie Doll is a total toss off track if there ever was one.
Prince spreading himself very thin and already past the zenith of his powers at this point, so I attribute this to him rather than her.

it's interesting that, around the same time,Jill Jones was also having problems with the material that Prince was producing for her second album. She and Prince weren't seeing eye-to-eye on the direction that he wanted to take her in.Her planned second album (for Paisley Park Records) remains unreleased.

I agree,"Girl Power" isn't very good.

I think my drummer got somethin' to say! Lay it on me now in a milky way!
Are you all seriously pretending this song isn't a guilty pleasure? Because it is, and you know you totally love it.

I used to have this hanging on my bedroom wall. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Is it wrong that I want to follow that chain around her waist? 99.9% of everything I say is strictly for my own entertainment

That song is disappointing, especially compared to the strong tracks that appeared on the previous album.

If this setlist is the final setlist, I can see why Sheila got into a disagreement with Prince
This is an example of the start of Prince albums having no real direction or vision

I remember when Donnie Simpson played the just released track "Scarlet Pussy" On BeT's "Video Soul" while interviewing Sheila. She could barely keep seated in her seat of the excitement of hearing it. I swear she had an orgasm.... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P.

it's impossible to judge an album by the song titles, but that tracklist doesn't look too appealing.Plus, the two songs that we have heard ("Girl Power" and "Scarlet Pussy") are mediocre,at best.

Was Love and S** supposed to be on this album too? I didnt know if that one was supposed to be on the Self Titled album or not.
Knowing Pe Nilsen has heard many of these tracks....I know somebody out there got them....theywill be released one day....knowing Prince doesnt care about suff like this. Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.
