When we were waiting in Lucille's before the show, the hostess asked me who was playing, because she "seems good" from what she heard at soundcheck.
When I said, "Sheila E.", she just
She asked me what had she done.
I named a bunch of songs, and nothing rang a bell.
I found myself apologizing, and said, "Oh well, she was popular in the 80s"...
I finally said, "Performed with Prince".
She nodded her head and said, "Oh, cool."

I had to have nearly the exact conversation with at least 6 people
Except I was telling them "Oh, well she was in Prince's band for a few years..."
Felt like I was being so disrespectful to Sheila! If you will, so will I |

Yes!
How was the DC show?
If I didn't have to work yesterday, I would have tried to drive down there!

It was sooo amazing Sheila has energy for days! I didn't want it to be over.... Also, her DC outfit was better. She was dressed like a human disco ball! If you will, so will I |

But I also don't say I love something if I don't because everyone else does.
I enjoyed the show very much. I met nice people, and got to see Sheila E. live. fdeluxe was part of it.
Gotcha! But that comment was meant for Susannah or uber fans of Susannah. I just wanted them to know that I wasn't poo pooing Susannah.
yeah... nothing worse than a closet poo pooer;-) |

I was at the NYC show... you guys have pretty much summed it all up. Band was amazing! I actually love the acoustics at BB Kings, I've never seen a show there that I thought sounded a hot mess. Did take pics but I forgot to being the "good" camera so all of the pics are on the iPhone. I have video tho, just YT search for Sheila E BB Kings and they should come up.
Nice to meet some of the Orgers, I was keeping it low key that night, but had a fabulous time. Sheila has been my girl crush for YEARS so I was soooo freaking GIDDY to see her again. Sy Smith was awesome, she has an AMAZING voice! I even sent some pics and vids to Sheila's guitarist on twitter. He was adorable, but I tend to crush on guitarists with long hair, it's just my thing. **shrug**
She had a nice mix of her songs and some Latin flavor but I'd LOVE to see her perform with her family... They usually keep it close to the Oakland area tho. Maybe one day... Prince esta muerto...

I hate when people do that... I mean she really is the only one of the "proteges" that managed to have a pretty effin spectacular career WITHOUT him instead of the fade to Black like all the rest. UGH! Prince esta muerto...

I saw Sheila on Friday in Philly for FREE at the Smooth Jazz series at Penns Landing. Good show, she looked good.
No FDeluxe though.
Same situation happened to me with the women who didn't know who she was until Prince was mentioned. There was plenty of people familiar with her work but you know many just wanted to here The Glamourous Life.
It's hard to find people into the Purple people!! ThankUPrince! |

Jazz is really a dying artform. I go to a lot of shows and I don't see the youth. It's all middle aged and old folks. I think the associated artists should work harder to promote the music outside of the Prince community. Jazz still has a good cult following and SheilaE, fDeluxe, LarryG would be loved by that community. What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet? |

I mourned when the CD101.9fm here in NY went off the air - it was an all-jazz station.
However, the last few years they seemed to have turned into an elevator music station. Seems like the only "jazz" they played was that vanilla "Kenny G meets Vangelis" type.
