The song is decent...the video, eh...but Susannah is still a babe! Paul is still a cutie too, but he isn't aging very well!

Didn't know there was a video for this, thanks for posting thumbs up!

As for the song, it's great - you know what this and a few other tracks on the album remind me of - classic Brand New Heavies circa 1994, I could totally hear this on 'Brother Sister'. cool

Thats a good comparison. When I first heard it I was trying to think who it reminded me of. BNH's, a little bit old Nikka Costa.

Good but not great, just like the rest of the album.

Still better then anything Prince has done since 2007

REALLY? Holy cow you must hate melody wink This album is better crafted and more solid than any album I've listened to from Prince in a long time. Songs here and there I like, but it's a mess of not knowing what is good and what isn't on his part imo. I like that fdeluxe sounds like a collaborative effort - a BAND - where people brought their skills to the table across the board. I'd love it a little more stripped down, but that is a personal preference. And I like that I can hum the tunes...also a personal preference.

I disagree. What I hear on FDeluxe's CD is nothing I have not heard a thousand times before, that is why the tracks are forgettable, including this one. I will take LotusFlowr way over this cd.

In your opnion - which is subjective and in no way based on any fact - Imo Gaslight is NOT a cohesive collection - the ballad is weak and the second half of the album kinda goes nowhere

I like that fdeluxe sounds like a collaborative effort - a BAND - where people brought their skills to the table across the board.

If you say so - I think some parts sound like they are W&L influenced with splatterings of Eric leeds -which is all 'middle of the road' good but nothing particularly beyond pleasing to my ears.

There are clearly collaborative moments with Lotus - Michael B's drums the most obvious example.

The issue for me has always been that IMO Paul and Susannah are not up to being lead singers - the 'sanctified' screeching makes my ears bleed and ruins what could've been a good tune if someone else had taken lead.

Leeds, by and large, saves the project- but not enough to make it a keeper

But glad you like it - each to their own wink

While I don't think that Gaslight is any musical Opus, just making something that sounds different doesn't make it better. "Everybody loves Me" is for sure original, but it's total garbage.

I'm not a big fan of Lotus Failur3, I think the guitar playing is over rated and bland and ordinary, with the only passable track being "$"

So yeah, I'm gonna go with Planet Earth, and if it weren't for Guitar, Future Baby Mama and Mr. Goodnight, we'd have to go back to 3121.

And barring 3121 and a handfull of tracks of PlanEar, the last album Prince has produced that's as good as Gaslight..... ouch....... New Power Soul?

Ummmm.. Everyone has different tastes. And fDeluxe has their style of music, Prince has his. Lets just leave it at that. There's an audience for all of it. The saying "one man's trash is another's treasure" applies even to music.

hm. Please share tyou 1000 times before songs. Cause I grew up listening to and collecting music, the American top 40 was my idea of baseball trading cards, Soul Train was my church and Billboard was my Bible. Lotusflower is a stone cold mess. the faux minneapolis sound is weak and the melodies barely exist. As always Prince plays well when you can make him out from the poor production. Tinny linn drums just prove he can't find that sound again. His lyrics have fallen to drivel as well. Take Lotusflower PLEASE. I'll wait till Prince makes a good album again. In the meantime I'll take Gaslight. And yeah - it's up to what you hear. I've heard Prince at his best, it's just been a REALLY long time. Gaslight isn't groundbreaking, but its something I can listen to again and again. I'll take that over noodling.

Rather than discuss the supposed merits of 'Sanctified' you'll continue to derail the thread with your prince hateraid just for a change - we get that too

Getting closer - you're actually talking about FDeluxe - but what about sanctified???

There's also one for Over The Canyon floating around. I'm sure Paul would repost them both if asked.

I'm not a fan of the minneapolis CD but I love LotusFlowr. songs like Dreamer, Boom, Colonized Mind, Wall of Berlin and Love Like Jazz do not come off as a "cold mess" to me. If you want to hear songs that are a mess then turn on your local radio. But we can agree to disagree.

some of the tracks on FDeluxe's CD just sounds like souless throwbacks of pop jazz from the 90's. Tracks like Gaslight, Drummers and Over the Canyon are so cringeworthy. Whereas with the O7 and some of Prince's recent work the arrangements and sound is more engaging in melody. the only thing that saves a lot of these tracks is when Eric Leeds play. I follow an indie group call SoulCyle and if you listen to their CD called Mosaic, the vibe and arrangements to me, mostly instrumental is what is missing in FDeluxe. I appreciate the band as great musicians and I would love to support them live but their studio work is simply forgettable.

We are just mountains apart in musical taste I guess. With the exception of Jesse Johnson, the E. Family, and the O7 many of the work produced by the Associated Artists continue to dissappoint. Regardless of what I feel I'm happy that you and others enjoy the CD because at the end of the day any music that makes anyone smile is alright with me. cool

funkomatic

This track isn't groundbreaking, but I do feel the funk. Whereas most of Prince's funk since the 90s leaves me totally cold. It sounds forced, too light or whatever.

So "Yay" from me!

The whole Gaslight album is great, it's is criminally underrated by fans IMO (and the Time's new album overrated in comparison).
