Mavis Staples, The Voice, yea or nay!

Big yea for me, as a Christian these songs really lifted me up. Unlike much gospel this music was about positive stuff not negative biblical literalism, unlike our new Prince and his Jehovah cult.

Just really well done songs that lance the heart. Mavis sings her butt off. The videos are good as well. Prince was really good when he helped Mavis pay her bills. Amen.

What a sweet lady as well. Too bad Prince sold her out.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

YEA! Love the album. I was lucky enough to catch a one-off show at Glam Slam in Minneapolis on Sep 17, 1993. Later that night there was another show at Paisley Park with Prince. The next day she did an in store appearance at the NPG store and signed autographs. Great week, Lenny Kravitz was out at Paisley Park a couple of nights before that!

Hell muthafuccin YEA! Mavis, as part of The Staples Singers, was a major R&B and christian recording artist long before Prince came along. I hate when people act like Prince discovered her or made her big or something. MAVIS AINT NEVA NEEDED PRINCE - HE NEEDED HER! Believe that!

I'd say Prince needed Mavis to crossover to that gospel audience and older black audiences who may have found him limited to only rauncy lyrics and rock tunes. Prince is no dummy. He finds subtle ways to stay at the top of his game and those include working with highly regarded artists from earlier decades, although he kind of slept on Sly but whatever. We forget that artists like Mavis and George have very loyal followings that could almost rival those of Prince. They are the types of artists whose music is played in households from generation to generation. Chaka falls into the same category. They are considered pioneers and Prince, genius as he is, doesn't have quite have that same status. He didn't start a movement like Clinton and his music isn't played in the church like Mavis.

Seems like at the time that Prince signed them to Paisley Park, he was upset by George being broke. It was a very honorable thing he did by signing these two great icons to his label, although their albums (on Paisley Park Records) would be considered flops by most standards. I wouldn't say he needed them though.

George was broke but Mavis wasn't. George is still broke so being signed to Paisley didn't alleviate his financial problems. I think touring is still what keeps him paid and he didn't need P for that. I think its honorable to sign them but on the other hand, given that Prince is not always financially fair to his artists, an actual contract wasn't even necessary. And you're right, those albums would be considered financial flops but not artistic flops.

You mean clean as in clear sounding? I know it's on Deposition 3 CD set, with Prince vocal. Pretty clear sound.
