Jill Jones vs Sheila E 1987 albums

Which do you prefer?

I have to go with Sheila E.

The five non Prince penned tracks are as good as the Prince stuff and the Princ stuff is all stellar, i can't believe Prince isn't behind Hon E man.

It's hard for me to pick favorites as I love it from start to end.

Jill Jones on the other hand has the boring cover of with you and I never been keen on violet blue, it's the accordan I think.

Mia bocca, gspot, all day all night
my man and for love are top top songs.

Definitely the 'Sheila E'. album. It's her strongest, most consistent album.I'm still pissed that "Faded Photographs" wasn't released as a single. It could have been her biggest hit single.

The 'Jill Jones' album is good, but much of it sounded outdated by 1987 (the album contains a few 'Purple Rain' era outtakes).Plus,I think there's alot of screaming and screeching going on with the vocals, even though Jill is a great singer.

Man i agree on the vocals.

I fucking love G Spot, best song over the two albums.

I ain't hot on hold me, iwould prefer paradise gardens.

I'll go with sheila as she was fitter

Sheila's for sure. I love that album.

Jill's didn't grow on me till later, and even now I only love a couple of the songs.

If I had to choose it would be Jill Jones - Violet blue is amazing imo, along with All Day, All Night, For Love, My Man, Baby, You're A Trip

Remember hearing Mia Bocca 12 inch blasting out in Virgin records store where my mate worked at the time. he said, 'what you amke of this?' it was so signature Prince that even a few bars and you could tell.

I love the Sheila e album but imo it's weaker than both albums before it

Both albums to me sound like they include music that could have easily been 2 seperate albums

too me Sheila E the Glamorous Life is a 5 star strong cohesive album, Sheila E the album is a strong album, but the sounds are too different.

Album 1

OneDayImGonnaMakeUMine

Boy's Club

Hon E Man

Koo Koo

Love on A Blue Train

Pride & the Passion

Album 2

Wednesday Like A River

Hold Me

Fade Photographs

Paradise Gardens(Bside)

the World Is High(Bside)

Soul Salsa

for me the the 2nd album had some good directions of sound, but a few didn't quite hit it on the nail. The strongest one for me are bolded. I understand the concept but I don't think it was as strong cohesive album like the Glamorous Life. Bedtime Story as a ballad didn't match Next Time Wipe the Lipstick Off Your Collar or Noon Rendezvous. The B sides didn't seem to match the album as well. But there were some wonderful new sounds and vibes from this album like Dear Michaelangelo and of course A Love Bizarre. Dear Michaelangelo sets me in the mood of I Don't Want 2 Leave U for the Time, both are a nice "Prince sound" with a nice melody.

Sister Fate" – 3:55 (B side Save the Children)

"Dear Michaelangelo" – 4:37 "A Love Bizarre"* – 12:16 (Prince) "Toy Box" – 5:36 (B side Holly Rock) "Yellow" – 2:10 "Romance 1600" – 3:56 "Merci for the Speed of a Mad Clown in Summer" – 2:46 "Bedtime Story" – 3:41

I dig both albums :

Jill Jones proved she could really sing on

BABY YOU'RE A TRIP &

VIOLET BLUE

vocals freaking amazing

then she killed

ALL DAY ALL NIGHT vocally as well :

Sheile E FADED PHOTOGRAPHS

is one song vocally where she proved she had what it takes :

Also WED LIKE A RIVER

HON E MAN

Loved both albums :

Although I never understood what took so long for the fans to get a JILL JONES album

We fell in love with her singing background on the 1999 album and Vanity 6 / Apollonia 6 albums :

" He's All Black, He's All White, Everybody's Gotta Jam 2Nite, Limouzine ".

I know, Jill should have had some kind of album midway 1999-Purple Rain and around Parade era

I totally disagree. The third album is her best work. It's her strongest, most consistent album.A few tracks were recorded without Prince's involvement, which means we were finally allowed to hear the 'real' Sheila E....also,I think her vocals on this album are superb. On "Hold Me",she displays a whole new confidence that we didn't hear on the first two albums.

'The Glamorous Life' and 'Romance 1600' are very good albums with some interesting moments. But there's a few filler-ish,gimmicky tracks on those albums.'Sheila E' sounds more focused and on point.

Jill Jones got a raw deal. Her album should have appeared in early 1985,so that she could have benefitted from the Purple Rain hype.Songs like "G-Spot" and "All Day/All Night" would have really gotten alot of attention in '85 when the world was obsessed with the Minneapolis Sound.By 1987,that sound was outdated and the whole concept of the G-spot wasn't so shocking anymore.

Another mistake they made with her album: not releasing "My Man" as a single. That should have been the first single. It's a strong, powerful pop tune.

I agree with you there, her first album was a fantastic funk album, but Romance 1600 just sounded contrived. "Sheila E" is the album that could have made her a full-fledged star. But then of course she stopped promoting the album and joined Prince's band. I was SO mad when that happened, because the album just faded away...

That's the blandest track on the entire album. It doesn't sound "Prince involved" at all and sounds kinda generic like the rest of the slow stuff that was on the radio during that era.

I still can hear that "Parade" had happened earlier because of the horns and strings on some parts of the album. Prince should have given Jill some stuff like "Vibrator" and released her around 1983 or 1984 when his sound was still ice cold.

I felt the same way! 'Sheila E' was the album that could have made her a superstar.Unlike the other two albums,it had at least 4 potential hit singles.I really wanted her to spend the year focused on this album....touring,releasing singles/videos and getting the proper promotion from Warners/Paisley Park. But,as you pointed out,she joined Prince's band and put her own career on hold.I was happy to see her in his band, but alas,it meant that her own album would be put on the backburner.Such a shame because it truly is her masterpiece.

but the thing is...."Hold Me" is pure Sheila E lol That was her first single that sounded like HER being HER.The previous singles were just Sheila singing Prince songs.....good songs, but they didn't really display her own personality.

I do like the song, and the only thing that sound remotely like Prince is the piano, it has that 'Fathers Song' echoey feel

It was a big hit for her, which is good, but I do agree there are songs on this album including Hold Me that sound like everyday 1980's radio.

1/2 the songs on this album Prince wrote/cowrote with Sheila the other half give or take she wrote/wrote with others.

Although both were in heavy rotation in my tape player when they came out , if I had to chose I'd say Jill Jones was better. Out of all of Sheila E's releases, Sheila E. is the one I listened to the most. Up to this day I still listen to it often.
