Jesse Johnson Revue vs Andre Cymone A.C

Which of these 1985 albums do you prefer.

I'm gonna go with A.C.

The Dance Electric
Pretty Wild Girl
Book of Love
Satisfaction
Neon Pussy Cat

It's a tough call as Revue contains some seriously great mplsfunk, my pick woud be

I Want My Girl
Just too Much
Let's hav some fun
Can you help me

I think theseare probably the best albums both artists have released.

I think Andre has a number of great songs on all his albums, I also like his contributions on Evelyn "Champagne" Kings Face To Face and Jody Watley's albums.

If I think about the six albums they did in the 1980's between them I'd rate thus.

A.C

Livin In The New Wave

Revue

Every Shade Of Love

Shockadelica

Survin' In the 80's

And I'd take Ta Mara And The Seen over The Girls.

i personally think jesse's solo albums are some of the best prince related artists albums out of the entire bunch. the first 3 solo albums are very prince sounding, so much so that when my mate played them in the second hand record store he worked in, that sold bootlegs back in the day, people used to think it was prince, because of the style of the tracks, his vocals were similar, and his guitar was very similar. even the artwork was similar

then bare my naked soul was quite a change in sound, but it was another great album, from a time when rock/grunge/retro was big, so prince doing chaos and disorder and lenny kravitz and it fitted in with that

then more recently his last album had some fantastic stuff. but i think it was slightly spoiled with the seques and stuff. a bit of editing would have made an amazing set, but i doubt it would have sold any better or worse

dance electric is one of the best tracks that prince has recorded but not released his own vocal version of. it's almost criminal that it didn't make it onto a b side, especially the looooonng version. instead we had to make do with andre's version as a consolation prize, but even then they still cut the track in half instead of putting the full version out, so this recent find from doc and sticking it online is a pretty cool thing. it just makes you wonder why it didn't end up on the reissued cds

Thanks for starting this thread, Romeoblu. It made me re-visit those Jody Watley tracks, and that shit is SLAMMIN! Andre Cyone really did some great work with her.

Revue is better overall.

Neon Pussycat may be my favorite song from either album though.

You're so glam, every time I see you I wanna slam!

Living In The New Wave imo had alot more interresting instrumentation and funky licks than what I've heard from Jesse's first singles atleast. Never heard any of his first albums all the way through.

'AC' is such an underrated album.I think it's one of the best 'Minneapolis Sound' albums of the 80s.

Yeah, I'm seriously surprised by some of the negative comments regarding AC. Admittedly, in reference to the OP's question, I'd have to go with Jesse's Revue album in the head to head contest. But AC, on the whole, is a fantastic album (agreed, one of the best MPLS sound albums from that period). I've always thought Andre did a stellar job with the production on that album (outside of Dance Electric). His work on that album got me interested in his other production work (love everything he did with Jody). On a side note, I have been curious for years why Columbia asigned D-Train's Hubert Eaves to help Andre with the production on AC. Andre had already proven he was quite capable of producing himself and other acts. It just seems odd that they'd asign a co-producer to him at that point. Anyway, I digress... I love AC. Just wish it was longer. I actually like Satisfaction as much as Andre's version of Dance Electric (although, that newly surfaced 12" promo of DE is beyond sweet -- just wish Dr. F would have posted it at a higher quality than 128 kbps). Listening to FWV's great vinyl rip of AC right now. Still sounds great. I enjoy listening to "...New Wave" and "Survivin...", but I think AC has aged much better than those two and it's by far his best album.

the only problem with 'AC' was the single choices. After "Dance Electric",the singles should have been..

"Pretty Wild Girl"---the best 'Minnepolis Sound' slow jam that Prince never recorded

"Book Of Love"

"Neon Pussycat"

I agree. I like Andre's first two albums more than A.C.

Jesse's first three albums top all of Andre's.

Jesse by far. Even with Purple Rain blowing up, Andre could only get limited airplay. Jesse was all over radio with the singles from the first two, and even though Andre's first two albums are decent, AC is by far his weakest. Dance Electric stands out above all other Andre songs...Except for maybe Kelly's Eyes, which is still no Dance Electric.
