Your favorite protege video. Music videos in the world of Prince aren't always that groundbreaking, but sometimes they can be really fun and cool to watch. What's your favorite music video done for a protege?
My favorite:
Drive Me Wild
I think Vanity looks the best here out of any video. I'm gay, but there's something completely magnetic about her dancing when she's doing backup vocals behind Susan. She has about the longest and strongest-looking legs/thighs I've ever seen and what a face.
I guess her confidence is super attractive. Back then, there simply wasn't a girl as fierce and as hot as her!

Jill Jones "Mia Bocca"
When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I do love this one too! You're right about being drawn to Vanity even though she's in the background. Watching her do her steps was almost hypnotizing! Exactly! Something about her is just so easy on the eyes. I love confident people.
Mia Bocca is great, as well. Jill is in another league. I was just telling another orger how I feel Jill and Sheila have aged sooooo well. I think Jill is more beautiful now than she's ever been and its 20 years later! Wowza.

Jerk Out ~ The Time Crazay ~ Jesse Johnson & Sly Stone Fishnet ~ Morris Day Koo Koo ~ Shiela E You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Vanity 6 -Nasty Girl & Drive Me Wild the sex kitten fantasy vibe they had was untouched, Vanity had control and she had a magnetic beauty that Susan & Brenda just vibed right with her.
Sheila E the Glamorous Life, She was erotic city in that video the moves the winks the hand movements, I missed that level of sexy during the Romance 1600 and after but it came out sometimes
I forget with # but the 1st Madhouse video where they had to break someone out of jail, it was just fun and gave us another side of the SOTT era hardnock life
the Family Screams of Passion, could have been more chic but fell into the same dreamy vibe of Mountains. I love the character each member had. Love that whirlwind spin by Susannah before she screamed [Edited 3/15/12 12:56pm]

Control is a good word for it. Control, confidence, I've said before (and I know IT's been said before) that Vanity was like a female Prince minus the musical mastery. The attitude, the presence, the control over their body and how to make it look a certain way. Its rare you see performers with that level of awareness of what makes a good show.
I like that Screams of Passion is like a bizarro Mountains video. Kind of made it a cool vibe that appeared inclusive. This is the Paisley Park crew (think Murder Inc, Bad Boy, Young Money today, loosely).

Would love to have seen the completed finished video to

10 was the first video with the bank robbery and 13 was the jail break if I remember correctly. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I love the way Jesse Johnson's video for "Baby Let's Kiss" is filmed. It's very arty and fits the tone of the song. It's my all time favorite.

I totally agree, Vanity was his match, Vanity & Morris owned that frontman position. And Vanity did know how to turn it on and up. It would have been hot if she learned guitar. Vanity's sexiness wasn't made up, she didn't get that from watching another woman. You hear her command on the V6 version of Sex Shooter
and if you watch Susan she had the Prince sexiness 2. I 1st noticed it in the Drive Me Wild Video, her movements were like an innocent Prince
Yep, the Paisley Park crew, from the Time-Madhouse he had the right bands, He just didn't manage em well, cause if he did his purple reign would have been much deeper and longer lasting. I still try to image what the PR era would have been like with Vanity 6.

I still can't believe Jill didn't have much succes, she's a totale package, strong voice, killer looks, amazing music...she's one of the few that brought Prince music to another level. Look at the video...stunning.

I totally agree! Taja Sevelle's album came out around the same time as Jill's and she had like 3 videos. She didn't have much success either, but I did really like her first 3 albums. I guess Prince just thought, "Here's your record deal, now you make it work!". He should have done a world tour for SOTT and brought at least one of them along to help promote. TRUE BLUE

That was one of the bad things about the SOTT/Revolution break
the whole protege scene just dropped off the radar. Madhouse wasn't given a good chance because everyone in the Madhouse band was in the SOTT band
Jill Jones, wasn't 'included' in the SOTT era like the previous proteges, she wasn't 'visible'
She should have had an album somewhere in the 1999-Purple Rain years and one in the ATWIAD-Parade years. She should have had her own band with that 'Prince visual sound vibe' and like the previous proteges, gotten a bit of a leverage with Prince's shine on her.

I think MTV refusing to air the "Mia Bocca" video hurt Jill's chances A LOT. I never saw that video until youtube.
It's my favorite now, but back in the day it was "The Screams of Passion" video. As cringeworhty as it is to watch now, I was gaga for Susannah Melvoin. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

why didn't they show the video?

it's been "said" that the reason was the "interaction" between jill and the little boys in the video. mtv felt it was jill trying 2 seduce little kids with the lyrics of the song. think "i have only had one lover since i was 12 years old.." man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I remember hearing that Prince was not giving MTV a clip for "Sign of the Times" since they wouldn't air Mia Bocca. Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com
