Is this a diss at the Time by Jesse?

probably & a gentleman would take the higher ground by saying nothing & letting the performances do the talking.
however i get where Jesse is coming from & as i said in a previous post i respect him more for pushing the envelope to work with an artist like D'Angelo. as much as i love Morris Day he is stuck in 1985 - the zoot suits, the pimp swagger, the stacy adams, the old man dance moves, the mirror routine, the blah blah blah. Condensate was THE TIME opportunity to put their mark on their gig but instead they stuck with the cabaret act MD & Half Time have been sleepwalking through at every back water gin joint for the past 20 years.
now i know why Morris keeps asking what time it is? because he thinks we are still in 1985.

Interesting perspective. I think u may have just hit the nail on the head.

That last line............exactly right and well said. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.

Sounds like a hint to them that he's able to share his creative, music ideas moreso with D'Angelo and crew than his O7 buddies. Seems D'Angelo has no problem with Jesse having his 'solo' moments during his shows. At least in the clips I've seen on youtube.

I have to say I was rather shocked to not see MORE writing involvement by Jesse on The O7 cd. Plus it wold have been a nice change to grow the sound by Jesse doing some lead vocals. So I kinda get it. I don't see it as a diss. Just being honest.

valid (& amusing) points from safetypin. I suppose that for The Time (or the O7 &/or "part Time") it's the same dilemma that many other established/older acts face:
try to "branch out" & do something musically that's "out of the norm" from what that group normally does.. risking alienating a large (or majority) part of that group's fans..
or to keep doing basically the same show/performance over a (very) long period of time, understanding that the more loyal/longer term fans are paying to see that group do their "classic hits"..
right or wrong, once a group (or singer) becomes known for a certain style of music & if they don't branch out or challenge their core audience while they're still very popular then that group - like The Time - will likely become painted into that certain.. style of music.
I have no idea how hardcore/longtime fans of The Time/O7 would react to an album that sounded like a classic John Lee Hooker record.. or if Morris & the fellas did an album that sounded like it should be played on a "smooth jazz" radio station.. but I would imagine that a significant part of their fans would be - minimally - scratching their heads, if not outright turned off by this change in musical style.
again, safetypin's point is well-made. at some point, though, either Morris &/or the group as a whole made the decision - a "business decision"? - to basically stay with that funky, synthesizers-as-horns, jammy-with-some-rock-guitar sound that they established a long time ago..
I'll see you tonight..

I think he was taking shots at Jesse Jonson's Revue. Seriously though... Jesse is in a fan band. D'Angelo, Quest are to some extent wannabe Prince fanboys. They are not his peers. I'm sure they are thanking their lucky stars and kissing Jesse's azz everytime he suggests anything at all. And I'm sure his ego is loving the stroking. However, it's kind of like when Prince was all in love with the internet and alternative record distribution methods when they were desperate for a major star, and he didn't want to abide by the terms of his contract with WB. At some point the courtship is over and reality sets in. And we all know how that turned out. [Edited 2/8/12 3:56am]

I think Jesse wanted to be the front man in a band his entire career. He had that shot in The Jesse Johnson Review. The music was good, and he demonstrated that he is a killer song writer, especially with his last one. In The O7, he was buried. He is behind Morris, Jimmy, Terry, and to a certain extent, even Jerome. D'Angelo lets him up front, and he feels more valued. He is the Keith Richards to Mick Jagger, The Samborra to Bon'jovi. In this business you have to get in where you fit in. Howeverer, watching footage from the shows where Jeff was playing lead, and Jesse came back, there is no discernible difference in the quality of the music. It just freed D'Angelo up from playing rhythm. So D'Angelo does not need him in his band, he wants him there. And sometimes that can make all the difference.

as much as i love THE TIME the myth is bigger than the reality - they were never around long enough to grow as a band - compare them to CAMEO - whose sound, stage act and look developed and matured with each release. CAMEO were also able to keep their original audience (circa Cardiac Arrest) whilst attracting a new audience when they had commercial success (circa Word Up / Candy).
THE TIME now look and sound like a one trick pony. Their opportunity to take it further was when Pandemonium was released as they were still relevant in the music scene of the early 90s. However they blew it then and they have blown it again now.
Which is strange given the talent in the band...i guess THE TIME does not add up to the sum of it parts.
Now where did I leave my Morris Day alarm clock?

Well, I don't think he's going to satisfy that goal by being a session/backup musician for another act. At least he was a member of The 07 and had some input. The Condensate album credits say he even did engineering for it. In an interview, the group said that they recorded an album prior to Condensate and scrapped it, and that Condensate LP was newly recorded songs. It doesn't make a lot of sense to basically stick with the group since 2008, and then quit right after the album was released. If he was unhappy, he had plenty of time to leave beforehand. Jesse had an interview earlier in 2011, and was speaking positively about the then upcoming album. In the press release from the group, they said Jesse had made no comment about quitting the day before, when they had a group conference. That's exactly what Jellybean told me when I talked to him also. And he was clearly very upset and pissed off about how this had gone down.
I'd understand Jesse's frustration if it weren't for the fact that he DOES have writing credits on "Condensate", more than anyone bar Jam and Lewis.
Who knows what the actual dynamic is between the seven members though. I've said it before and I'll say it again. The Time NEEDS Prince as the leader, the person calling the shots, the person that keeps them whipped into shape, settles disputes and stops all the infighting.
Without one clear leader, it's gonna become a mess of egos. The end result is exactly what's happened - a member quits and the fans are the ones who miss out. I was excited beyond belief at the possibility of seeing the O7 play here in the UK - including Jesse, who is one of my favorite artists of all time. |

Jesse made some comment about leaving while they're still friends. Quitting out of the blue with no warning doesn't seem like a good thing to do to friends. He could have discussed what was bothering him with the others, and then if it could not be resolved, then say he wanted out. As far as Prince goes, he was fighting with his own band members. How could he have solved anything? Prince's control (and not letting them have much creative input) was the main reason The Time broke up in the first place. Jimmy Jam said that the movie that wound up being Grafitti Bridge was originally supposed to be a film about them and Prince wasn't involved. I'll say it ONE MO' TIME: As much as I loved seeing the OG 7ven in MPLS this past November, they only did 1.25 songs from CONDENSATE: a snippet of "Strawberry Lake" and "Trendin". The rest was ALLTHATSHITPRINCEWROTE!!!!!! That MAY have got BORING after almost 4 years of playin' the "Same Ole Same Ole"!!!!! From my perspective, SOMEOME is in "Cruise Control" & can't tell TIME!! Or maybe some folks is makin' up 4 "Lost Time" Hmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!! Another way 2 look at it is......Jam & Lewis have production committments, Jellybean is up 4 the "Ultimate Hustler Award (OG 7ven, Part-Time, FDeluxe, Ronnie Baker Brooks etc.)" Monte's got OG7ven & various production projects & a solo project, and whether it's "Part-Time" or OG 7ven, Morris Day is STILL gettin' His!!!!! Jesse is a LEGENDARY Guitarist who is building His resume' just like all the rest of 'em. Hopefully the Brothers can work it out in the end. We'll see..........

Yeah, exactly. It's strange that he wasn't even able to express it to them directly first, rather than just posting it out of the blue on Facebook.
I mean a Prince at peace and not already fighting his own battles. Prince had his own problems with the whole GB thing. As I understand it, Warners were unwilling to finance the movie without the original line-up of The Time being in it.
And this was after Graffiti Bridge had already gone through multiple evolutions including a version where the "battle of the bands" thing was supposed to involve Tony LeMans and the Coco Boyz squaring off against Mazarati. Warners stepped in and that same concept (originally called "The Dawn"), became, once again, Prince VS The Time, as in Purple Rain. Of course, after Batman Prince wanted Kim Basinger for the lead female role, that fell apart and Ingrid was brought in.... you had the whole drama with Jill Jones getting her role cut down and having to mime to Elisa's vocals on "Love Machine", etc.
So I have no idea what Jimmy Jam was talking about, Graffiti Bridge existed and was "in the works" for a long time before The Time were even involved.
And for as much as Prince may have been overbearing, he kept the band in better shape when he was involved. Without him, we get one single and then we've already lost an important bandmember and they may well have lost interest. And musically, although "Condensate" is a great album, I don't think anybody here is putting it up there with "Pandemonium" or "Corporate World" let alone the first three albums.

Messages I saw on Jesse's facebook that pretty much sum up the situtation:
Bernard Muzzikking Edwards II Im gonna unlike this page i cant believe this dude playing backup for d' angelo when he is far moe talented than d'angelo.Leaving a band as talented as the original 7 was a dumb move you were more relevant with them now your a no name to d angelo fans while he rock your style and you play backup. you best offf staying with the original 7 or going solo. what a fool... !
Tuesday at 5:51pm
Joe Hazen How long until you leave D'Angelo hanging the way you did your boys??? And after his tour is over, then what?? Maybe Terrence Trent D'arby will need a guitar player. Or then again, you could do another show at the Roxy for $10 a ticket and fail to sell the place out again.

Williams Lesley You should stop calling people babies. It's not nice and your trying too be cute. We're not the ones that jumped up and left a group because folks weren't treating (as you say) well. If you knew you couldn't get along with your former band members then you shouldn't of agreed to do the reunion album with them. Your a selfish and evil person. Your no better than the people your talking about. Now that's the truth.

Prince is always fighting something. Seems to me he ignores the one constant in all his battles. Himself. These guys are grownups with plenty of experience in the music world. Shit happens. At least this record happened and with Prince involved it never would have. And for the record I like it as well as anything else they have done with a few exceptions.

I remember a story in the late 1980's that The Time was going to do a movie with Janet Jackson. Her song You Need Me was supposedly written for it. The song wound up being a B-side. I guess the movie fell through. I don't know if this is what Jimmy is referring to, but the Grafitti Bridge comment was made recently during an Original 7ven interview. I've always wondered what The Time/Janet movie was going to be about. The whole group (except Morris) has worked with Janet.
