Morris Day & The Time - Jan 28, 2012

Great show, per usual from the boys...They played Andiamo's restaurant/concert venue, where seating was at tables, not the usual concert seating. The O7 seems to be only for making new music, and not touring, because they didn't play any of the new CD at all and only Morris, Monte and Jellybean were there (Morris Day & The SomeTimes). I was really looking forward to hearing "Toast To The Party Girl" live, but still, a great show. Hearing "Blondie" made my night.

Setlist:

1. Skillet

2. Cool

3. Get It Up

4. Pandemonium

5. Chocolate

6. Wild and Loose

7. My Stick

8. Blondie

9. My Drawers

10. Fishnet

11. Oaktree

12. 777-9311

13. Jerk Out

14. Sometimes I Get Lonely

15. Gigolos Get Lonely Too

16. Ice Cream Castles

17. The Walk

18. The Bird

19. Jungle Love

Thanks for the laughs, arguments and overall enjoyment for the last umpteen years. It's time for me to retire from Prince.org and engage in the real world...lol. Above all, I appreciated the talent Prince. You were one of a kind.

Whats the point of doing new music if you arent going to play it? Prince has done this nonsense for the last 15 + years, i mean the Emancipation tour was the biggest joke, hey i got 36 new songs, but im going to only play 2,3 of them, why record then?

Not everyone goes to concerts. I don't. I prefer to listen to records. Many veteran acts don't do new stuff, because they say people get up and take snack breaks or they don't respond to new material. The audience only want the hits they know. Also, many people live in places where acts don't go, especially rural areas or non-major cities and towns. They depend more on recorded material, because they have nothing else.

The Original 7ven released a new cd, not Morris Day and The Time. And if that's not confusing enough, Morris Day and The Time are planning to release a completely different cd of original material this year. And O7 is planning on touring Europe. On the plus side, we are getting a lot of new music and a lot of hot shows, no matter which band plays.

They should be playing new material. They WILL NEVER sell any more cds because it sho aint gonna get played on the radio. All of the artists I listen to play new songs when they have a cd out. Prince and The Time are the only two I have ever seen that are backwards. I agree..why even record. Whats the point when all they will do is play the same old crap night in and night out. I thought about going and was wishing I did but reading the track listing made me glad I did not. I have seen that show numerous times. They mixed up some of the order but still same songs. I had to choose between Lenny and The Time. looks like I made the right decision.

These are two different bands people. I know they have a weird Venn diagram with 90% of the material, but there is a separation. Morris Day and the Time will only perform the "legacy material", while The Original 7even/6ix, will perform legacy plus the new stuff. It is kind of like when Jagger sings with Superheavy. He will sing some Rolling Stones tunes, but with the Stones he will not play any Superheavy songs. On second thought, it is not like that at all.......

They played a little Cloreen Baconskin segway into some type of Morris Day rap thing, I wouldn't be surprised if that turns out to be one of the tracks on on their new cd. It wasn't that dissimilar to the "TimeJuice" track on Jellybean's Myspace. Whatever it was I don't think anyone was feeling it and Morris seemed to move forward fairly quickly.

Actually Shemp was in the Stooges before Curly, when they were doing vaudeville with Ted Healy.

two different bands or not why wouldn't Morris play the new songs. Most people I notice dont even recognize its a different band(of course the dies hards do) so why not promote the new cd with this band? It just makes no sense. Then again they come from the school of Prince who never promotes anything new anymore so I guess they are trying to follow suit like him

Because those songs do not belong to those guys. They are not the O7/O6. I understand your point, but if Morris plays the new stuff, then there is no reason for the other guys to tour later on this year. That is the only draw they will have. "We are playing the new songs"

Maybe. Maybe not. There is kind of a buzz about The Time this week in Detroit. The Pistons performance got favorable mentions on the local sports talk radio station and I heard it mentioned on the most popular rnb station. People that don't normally follow The Time's movements heard some positive statements about the guys so that is a good thing. Morris did mention O7 and the new album during the concert, but only briefly.

I would have preferred to hear the Condensate tracks, and apparantley I'm not alone. Morris got a heckled a couple times. The second he walked on stage, one dude yelled at him "Play Condensate". and Morris responded, "Hold on, hold on, I'm going to get to that sh*t later". biggrin But all he did was the Condensate skit.

three, two, one we are all back in the room...

Morris Day is stuck in that Jungle Love groove.... sure they recorded a new album but my man has been in the game too long now to change his routine. MD is the male version of Gloria Gaynor belting out I Will Survive for now and for ever more.

the Condensate album (as great as it is) is dead in the water. badly advertised and promoted. as i said before no wonder Jesse walked.

I agree the album is dead right now, but I don't blame Morris for any of that. If you don't like the promotion then I think that was more Jimmy Jam's department not MD. I credit Morris for getting back out there and trusting that Jam and Lewis will rejoin the group in the near-future for a second round of Condensate promotion. Say what you will about Morris, but he didn't commit to the project and then quit, bicth-style on Facebook. Fire-Rooster my azz, dude joined D'Angelo's band; not his own.

Morris has been undermining the reunion with all of these MD & the Time gigs since Condensate was released. Either he should've stopped that line-up when the CD dropped or they should've held off on the CD until his obligations ran their course. Now you've got fans showing up at "Part-Time" shows wanting to hear O7 tracks. If the O7 don't tour then that's fine but I'm not throwing down good money for an "Part-Time" show in the hopes they play new music. I'll wait till someone posts a setlist that I haven't heard before at prior shows. I'd be happy to hear a new song or two mixed in.

Eh, I see what you are saying, and in a world where the 3 missing members are available to work live shows, I would agree. But, that has not been the case. Jimmy and Terry have production commitments. My impression, from recent interviews is that Morris is grinding it out and turning lemons into lemonade right now, on behalf of himself and Monte and Jellybean. All the members have offers coming in are capitalizing on them in their own way. Monte is dropping a solo album later this year and planning to tour around that as well.

I agree with all of your frustrations about MD and The Time playing the same exact show, over and over and over. Nothing Morris does or says changes from show to show. You can go on Youtube and piece together footage from various shows and it's all the exact same thing. But for the moment, that is the best they can do until Jam and Lewis are available to tour and they figure out the Jesse problem.

Ok Partner, try to take a look at what is actually happening, as opposed to what you think should be happening. Morris Day and The Time exist in order to play the back catalogue from the band known as The Time. The O7/O6 reformed to make a new album Condesate. This material was not written for Morris Day and The Time to perform. It was written for The O7/O6. Thus, we won't hear it at any shows that are not O7 shows.

Chad Smith drums for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Chickenfoot. You will never hear Sammy Hagar singing Give it Away Now in concert.

I do believe that they will tour come Spring time or Summer. I think they released the album too soon. I do think that people will come to see the O7 if they know they are playing the new stuff AND they have appropriate opening acts. And that tour will be more exciting for people than seeing Morris Day and The Time at the Highpoint, North Carolina furniture show. (real gig)

Otherwise, I am with you. Why go at all?

If Paul McCartney, U2, & Mick Jagger don't really sell much today, why do you expect a old funk band to. Funk was never really mainstream, and The Time has never really sold that much. You're acting like they're Michael Jackson or The Eagles, and they weren't major like that. Many young people don't buy CD's in the first place, they download stuff for free. So even if the O7 had major promotion (which is not likely to happen on a small label), it still wouldn't sell if people are getting it for free. They have Trendin' playing at NBA games, that's promotion. It's doubtful that the group would get played on stations next to Lil Wayne & Eminem. How many people are going to a Morris Day & The Time show anyway? Do they have a Madonna or Bon Jovi sized audience, where playing new songs might make a difference in sales? No.
