When I first got my ticket, I assumed that Prince would definitely not be coming but he left open the possibility that he might show up to help the cause and encourage people to buy tickets. However, after watching that interview with Bobby Z., I am thinking that there is a chance he might actually join them on stage at the end of the concert for "Purple Rain," and maybe more. I don't think Prince will be on stage for the whole concert, especially if it's true that they'll be doing the whole Purple Rain album (since there is no way Prince would sing the full lyrics to "Darling Nikki"). But if he stays home with no good excuse, won't that look petty given the reason for the concert? Prince knows where he is going to be that night, and if he had some other place he needed to be, wouldn't he have told Bobby by now? It's not like he's scheduled to play a concert someplace else.

As much as people want it to be, it is not a Prince & The Revolution concert. So to assume because they are putting on this event, then Prince should feel obligated to perform with them is simply ridiculous. Geesh, let the man be and if you want to see Prince & The Revolution, buy the Purple Rain dvd, that way you can see them anytime you want.

I do have the Purple Rain DVD, as do probably 99% of the people on here, but thanks for the suggestion.

I don't think Prince should feel obligated to play at this concert or even show up. But given that he's supportive of the project, I would expect him to give some excuse if he's not going to come. If a bunch of my old friends threw a party and I was invited, I wouldn't miss it without giving a reason. He could accept an invitation to give a charity concert in Australia on Sunday night, or whatever. Of course, he can do whatever he wants. I'm just speculating that, since he hasn't given an excuse, and he is in Minneapolis at the moment, he may actually be thinking of coming.

I'd like to know where you got the information that the entire Purple Rain album is being played. That is actually even more far fetched than the possibilty of Prince showing up. I'm not being rude like many on this board, I'm speaking very matter of factly. I'm looking forward to this show and have been since the beginning. It will be amazing with or without Prince. I will be grateful for the show regardless. If Prince decides to be a part of the evening, of course that will be icing on the cake. It would be wonderful if he is there, but I'm not assuming or expecting him to be.

It's amazing that people on the board profess to be serious fans of a musician who wrote about "Positivity"- yet the negativity on this board is an embarrassment to Prince, his music and his message. People on here are so disrespectful to Prince and anything to do with him on a consistent basis. The arrogance of the internet has tainted this board. How easy it is to be negative, thats not impressive or admirable in any way. Being positive and uplifting is really why this board was created- to share our thoughts on the musician(s) we truly admire and enjoy. Instead, people choose to behave like Billy Jack Bitches. I'm pretty sure I read someone say on the org in one of those threads that the entire PR album will be included in the playlist. Having just listened to some of the recent interviews with the band, it seems very likely that rumor is false, and that the songs will be drawn from all the Revolution albums. So, I apologize for perpetuating a rumor that is probably false. I will be happy to hear whatever songs they play, with or without Prince. I will be delighted if he comes and I'll also be happy if he doesn't. I'm not trying to disrespect anyone (not in this context, anyway). My only regret is that the VIP tickets are all sold out. neutral

Edit: This is the thread where someone suggested that the entire Purple Rain album would be played at the concert:

http://prince.org/msg/5/3...?&pg=9

There are links to two interviews that I didn't listen to. The most recent interview I heard says that they aren't going to play any songs with "heavy lifting" vocals, like "Kiss." It seems to me that "The Beautiful Ones" would be a tough one to cover by that definition, which probably nixes the idea of playing the entire Purple Rain album, if that was ever actually considered. I"m hoping that "Darling Nikki" makes the setlist, though.

I can assure you that songs will be played that will make you completely forget that they aren't playing the Purple Rain album in full. I don't profess to know the setlist- that would spoil it. There will be numberous absolute shockers on the setlist. If you have a purple belt in jamology, this, For You, will be a Beautiful Night...

That may have been the plan at some point, but the latest interview suggests that they've realized that nobody else can fill in for him on vocals for some of the songs. It sounds like orger Revolutionary has a direct line to someone who knows what's going down.

Jellybean was at Seven last night. Rumours were that the band was to show up around 12:30am last night but that did not materialize. I left around 1:15, so not sure what went on after that.

Not sure who won the costume contest (I think I was off dancing in the back corner), but there were some nicely dressed folks for sure.

Was a fun way to start the weekend. Hope for more.

I was there to the end, I think, left around 2am. Saw Jellybean for sure late into the night, and got to hang a lot of new friends and such. Was GREAT to finally meet people with a similar love for the music. I was even greater to see everyone in the room dancing and singing to the most obscure tracks from Prince's career and actually knowing the words like I did, lol. What a fun bunch! I was able to chat with Bobby's wife and son who were there in the crowd. Everyone on that end was so grateful for us coming. I was grateful to be in the room surrounded by so many new friends. I'll definitely be back tonight. The party starts at 9pm.

I just got back from tonight's pre-party. I got Bobby Z's autograph! He was still there when I left, and I heard that Dez Dickerson, Dr. Fink, and Tyka Nelson were also in attendance, though I didn't get the chance to meet them. I brought in the foldover flap from the gatefold cover of my first copy of Around the World in a Day (which got detached from the rest of the cover at some point), and asked him if he would sign it for me, and he did. I'm going to have it framed when I get home along with a poster from tomorrow's show (if I can find one) or a news article about it. If someone who knows Bobby is reading this, please tell him that it means a lot to me that he took the time to sign that for a fan. That was the first Prince album I ever owned and tonight was the first time I've ever gotten an autograph from someone in the band. I'm so excited to be here, and to have met Bobby, and I can't wait for tomorrow night! How am I going to sleep tonight?!?

Here's Bobby Z. autographing my ATWIAD gatefold flip last night:

Bobby & Me #1

Bobby and Me #2

I'm on the hunt today for a concert poster to frame with this. Very, very cool for him to stop and sign an autograph for a random fan, particularly given how dorky I look in that shirt.

FYI, I heard a rumor that tonight's concert may be pro-shot for an official DVD that would be available for purchase later on with the proceeds going to the charity. That's just what I heard--no official confirmation or anything. If anyone has better information, please correct if necessary.

I was going to various wrecka stows yesterday and only one had a poster for the concert on the outside window. It was NoT "cheapo" but that one had a huge Prince section. I got the extended Raspberry Beret and they had multiple copies of 12 inches.

I think it was Treehouse records or Encore music that had the poster but you'd have to rip it off their wall. Sorry I don't remember which store. I want one too wink

I'm hoping there might be some extras at First Avenue, so that will be my first stop. Since the concert is completely sold out, it's not like they need posters to publicize it at this point, but I'm not going to take one without permission. Even if I can't find a poster, it's a nice excuse to do a little walking around downtown.

Sorry I don't remember which store. I want one too wink [Edited 2/19/12 8:43am]

I stopped by First Avenue and they don't have any extras, although they said it might be possible to get one after the show ends. I wandered around downtown for a while but a lot of places are closed. The only concert poster I saw was in a wine shop on Washington near 4th Avenue. Unfortunately they are closed today and won't open Monday until I'm gone, but if you're still going to be here on Monday afternoon, maybe they would give it to you. It's a smaller version of the big ones that are in front of First Avenue.

The Sunday edition of the Star Tribune has the long version of the story about Bobby Z. and the concert. I cut that story out and will frame it with the autograph he gave me.

The Census Bureau estimates that there are 2,518 American Indians and Alaska Natives currently living in the city of Long Beach.
