Let's Discuss Morris Day I know there has been a lot of discussion about the O7 or The Time and their new effort, but I have never seen a thread solely about Morris Day since I became an orger in 2003. I have been a fan of Mr. Day since the 80's but I don't know a lot about him. His cool persona as front man for The Time made him a lot of fans His vocals helped to create such hits as Cool, The Walk, 777-9311, etc. So just what is the story of Morris Day? Feel free to contribute any info, pics or whatever you may have about Morris

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I still dig Morris and his sense of humor. I enjoyed his show last year when I saw him perform for the first time--despite naysayers he still puts on a good show. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

I met Morris briefly in 2006 when they did the show in Vegas the night before the Tamar shows. It was right before the show so he was a little preoccupied but he was friendly albeit low key. I got the impression that he's nothing like his public persona. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I think you are right cuz he has kept a low profile over the years. I think he may be a genuinely nice guy, not anything like his onstage persona. Although he still can wear a cool ass suit

Even on the O7 dvd I notice he's pretty laid back and IIRC, being the front man for The Time wasn't something that he'd ever planned to do even though it worked out that way.
I agree he can rock the suits though...we always talk about how good P still looks but Morris ain't no slouch either, Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

When he was the band leader on michael baisden's talk show he seemed kinda quiet and kinda introverted. It must take a lot of effort for him to turn the time persona on and off.

Oh wow, you were at that show at the Rio the night before the Empire show in Vegas too? So was I. That was a good show and that's the night Prince got on stage wifh the Time and played some guitar. I met you the next day at the Empire, the night Prince surprised fans at Empire club, and came out the side of the stage on the floor side, and talked to fans, before the show, and you and some other orgers talked to him. I was standing right behind you and threw in a few words also, and told him the Rio show the night before was nice, but he barely heard me clearly bcuz a few fans were also talking to him at the time. It was nice that he took the time to come out and talk to fans before the show started. Getting back to Morris Day, I will say they performed a good show that night at the Rio. Yep, the Empire show was unforgettable because that's the night I met Prince, I met you, Ivy Nathan and Ian the same day. Remember when P was playing around with Tamar at the stage door and he disappeared after some lady yelled something fammy at him?
I tell ya, I really hit the jackpot that weekend because the first two people I met when I got off the plane in Vegas were Jerome and Jellybean right in front of me on the escalator at the airport...now those two guys love to chat and were very friendly. We yapped all the way to the baggage claim area.
Then Morris Day was literally the first person we ran into at the Rio before the show. During the show we also ran into Mr. Hayes who likes to mingle a lot. He gave me a big hug because he remembered meeting me in Boston and he is always fun to talk to.
And to top it all off I met Jerome Bettis at the airport when I was leaving! Being a die-hard Steeler fan for over 30 years, that was the icing on the cake....
Good times and great shows the whole weekend. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Babynoz, It was a grerreeaattt wknd! Yes I remember when Prince and Tamar came out. That was on a Sunday, before the second show started. P came out with a camera playing like he was taking pics of fans in front of the line, and he said a few words to us surprised fans lol, Then lo and behold Ms fammy chica USA ran up to the fence and said to Prince "Preeenccce u so fiiiinnne" lol. She looked like she was breathing heavy too. That's when P turned and walked back to the bldg and the fans on line wanted to throw eggs at fammy chica, for blowing their opportunity to speak with Prince. She was very embarassed abd walked away like a shy puppy. lol
Anyway, yes that was a fun wknd because on both days of the show that wknd, Prince surprised fans twice and came out to mingle and chat for a minute, plus the shows were fun. I still make a mistake sometimes and throw up the 3121 hand sign in the air (< ~~lol.. just kidding). Getting back to M. Day and the Time members, that's great that you had the opportunity to meet some of them in your travels.Their Rio show was a good warm up before the Empire shows that weekend. That Rio show was the second time I saw The Time perform live. Good and fun memories and met a 'few' nice people that wknd. [Edited 12/27/11 20:23pm]

Morris, I hear, is privately shy anyway. If you check "Purple Rain" just after he and the Time confronted him about the "showdown" and Prince and his band leave, the other Time members scatter around while Morris stands at the door looking forlornly suddenly. That was a sudden 360 from the extrovert front man he displayed throughout the film. He did that again during "Graffiti Bridge" lol

"...In 1972, Prince’s cousin, Charles Smith, invited them both to play in his band, with Prince on guitar and Cymone on bass, and Smith noted how they had already developed a twin-like sixth sense when playing together. Cymone’s sister Linda Anderson soon joined on keyboards, and with Terry Jackson and William Doughty on percussion the band Grand Central was formed. By the time Prince started high school in 1973, Smith had left and Prince replaced him with drummer Morris Day. The “uptown” Minneapolis scene was starting to generate heat and included rival bands like Flyte Time (consisting of Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, Jellybean Johnson, Monte Moir and vocalist Cynthia Johnson) and The Family..." Nice pics, thanks, so 1970s; the big 'fros, bell bottoms, leather jackets and polyester shirts, vests, studded and stitched suits, plaids, apple jack hats. The days of live bands, real musicians. Morris, Andre and Prince looked like they could have been cousins back in the day rocking those 'fros. [Edited 12/28/11 6:21am]

True, Timmy. In that scene it was like Morris was fronting a hard image in front of his band members, but when they weren't around he displayed his soft side.

I believe the director insisted that they (quote) "soften" that scene up. The "How's the family?" line and laughter didn't segue well into the PR performance that followed. So he asked that the scene be softened up. Not disagreeing with you about Morris' IRL personality, though. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Seriously, anyone who doesn't catch that moment in the movie--whether they were around in 1984 to see it on the big screen or decades afterwards on VHS or DVD, do not understand one of the key scenes that still makes this movie really great--and not cheesy. It is moments like this--the look on Morris' face after he makes the remark (combination insecurity and regret) that makes this movie timeless...not dated, as others on this board have suggested. Then the Director made a good call on that, because it was kind of cold when the band made fun of what happened to 'the Kid's Dad', and watching that scene you felt how cold it was, so yes, Morris showing that he did care in that moment, did help to soften things up.
Somehow when I see Morris Day, in his younger years, he kind of puts me in the mind of the kid in school who was the comedian in the class, and picked on the girls, and played practical jokes on them in a fun and annoying way. [Edited 12/28/11 7:35am]
