Toast to the Party girl by The Original 7Ven is about PRINCE!!!

As we all know, The Time has a new CD out called Condensate. The group was made to use a different name, but they're The Original 7ven... The Band Formerly Known as the Time.

Prince obviously had no input in this project, but he had nearly COMPLETE input into what the Time could and could not do back when he formed and produced the group as his "classier slapstick" alter ego.

I hope you've all paid attention to one GREAT song in particular on their new CD called "Toast to the Party Girl".

It's brilliant. It's clever. And it's an AMAZINGLY FASCINATING dig at Prince!!

The lyrics are as follows, with my interpreted translation.

Every time show down

hangin out greetin' fans (There used to be band battles in Minneapolis... aka "showdowns")

Signin' autographs

In walks a sexy school teacher type

Said she wanna meet the band (This is Prince, and his "effeminate" way, entering when perhaps band members that would become The Time were signing autographs)

Now if you wanna teach me somethin' baby go ahead make your move

I hope you got something hot (This is Morris expressing interest with what Prince has in mind for the time)

I know I can 'cause I got alot (Female voice. Prince responding.)

Then bring it on, let me see what you got (Morris looking forward to The Time project.)

CHORUS:

I started playin' with it

peeped what her game's about (This is Morris toying with the songs that Prince has written

Got the girl so turned on

She turned the party out (Prince was excited, and did a great job with the Time project)

Actin' sweet and innocent, that's part of her mystique (Think of Prince on American Bandstand!!)

But underneathe it she's a closet freak (Do I really need to explain who might easily be considered a closet freak... or perhaps "control" freak???)

Toast to the party girl (A toast/thanks to Prince for putting the Time project together)

Come on, let's party

(Before I continue... think "Party til it's 1999"... or Party-Up... or Party Man. How many songs has Prince referred to partying??? lol)

Oh, I like ya exhibition baby

You done caught a groove that's cool (Morris liking what Prince has put together. "Cool" might even be a direct song reference!)

Wherever you wanna take it honey, I'm gonna leave that up to you (Needs no definition. Prince was the producer)

If you're the thrill seeker type that craves the lap of luxury

I'll let you train the dogs, all seven nonstop (Morris allowing Prince to "train" The 7 members of The Time... with the 7th being Jerome, of course.)

And I'm gonna set it off, come on baby, let's rock. (Prince. Come on, let's work.)

CHORUS

Girl, you are the party superstar

You love performing your greatest hits (Hello!!! How many times has Prince said "We got too many hits" during his concerts, in reference to his greatest hits??)

You're so amazing, so amazing

How did you get so gifted (Easily a Prince reference)

Things you do with those lips (Easily a sly Prince reference)

Doin' the dance hall roll call

Knock one down and pulling one in (A reference to Prince being with Vanity... and Jill... and Susan... and many others?)

Then she said

What is your desire? (Interesting how this is spoken in "typical Prince schtick". A Prince ultimatum to Morris and members of The Time????? Hmmmmm)

It was getting intense

She's like kryptonite to men (Perhaps a reference to creative battles in which members had no control, and were forced to do his bidding. The Time members were weak! They had no power. They had to play behind a curtain. Show up on time. Couldn't produce for other artists, or get fired. (Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis) Hmmm...

So that's why I propose a toast

To the party girl, so raise your glass

To the party girl with the most

Ooh, ooh, ooh, baby

CHORUS

The toast could be a backhanded "thanks" to the self-proclaimed "Party Man". A thank you for his assistance, and for who they are now.

However, if you listen longer, Morris ends the song with his prototypical "You ain't got to go home, but you got the get the hell outta here"... as if to say, "You get your thanks, but now, you got to get the hell out of this project!!"

AMAZING Song! I'm fascinated by it!!

The music toward the end of this song includes the "chili sauce guitar riff", allusions to the Kiss sound, and early Prince keyboard stylings. It also pays homage to Baby I'm a Star with the way it sounds towards the end. (Think of Purple Rain!)

This song is a DIRECT backward clever DIG at Prince. And I'm okay with that. BUT WOW... what a clever song.

And for The Original 7ven to refer to Prince as "The Party Girl"... WOW! Just makes you wonder what inner beef must exist!

This is my interpretation, but it would be hard to convince me that this song is NOT about Prince. It's fascinating when you study the lyrics, and mentally replace Prince as the Party Girl.

Wow!!!!

Wow!!!!

Don't you know that crack kills?!!? Now put down that pipe!!

Interesting theory BTW.

Prince did an interview with a woman at Record World. They talked about whatever, then he asked her: "Does your pubic hair go up to your navel?" At that moment, we thought maybe we shouldn't encourage him to do interviews.

but anyway.....I LOVE THIS SONG! It wouldn't have sounded out of place on the first Time album.I love the Dirty Mind/After Hi School/New Wave sound. The last two minutes are alot of fun......a classic Time jam session,Minneapolis-style!! When Morris says that he needs some "chili sauce",how can you not smile? lol This is my third favorite track on the album.

Jeez, and I thought I was reaching when the chorus of Role Play seemed like a Prince reference:

Virgin prince's superfreak

Tonight you can be what you wanna be

Haters call it scandalous

Fellas, they can't handle this

lol Nope. Sounds like you took the song and let your imagination run wild with it. The lyrics sounds exactly what it references--a girl dressed in conservative fashion, giving the impression her personality matches the way she's dressed, but turns out she has a closet freak/party girl side to her.

Pokeno4Money (great handle by the way)... now you GET IT!!

I was just talking to a friend about those lines!!!!!

FIRST OF ALL... I LOVE Role Play. It's my favorite song on the CD. But let's get into it.

There was a LOT of stuff goin' on back in 1980, including the tour with Rick James.

You can "argue" that "virgin princes superfreak" is some sort of reference to Prince's messed up relationship with Rick James. "Virgin" might have even been some snide remark made to the "slight and effeminate, yet sex-driven" Prince by the "ultra funky macho" Rick. Jut a thought.

The rest of that verse can EASILY be interpreted as a diss.

Tonight you can be what you wanna be - Prince, you can do what the hell you want now.

Haters call it scandalous - Who wrote a song in 1989 called Scandalous? And who was essentially "hating" on The Time by not giving them visibility at large shows in major cities, and at Morris Day directly, by not giving him a fair shake in deal talks. (I hope you watched the DVD provided in the Condensate CD package.)

Fellas, they can't handle this - You can easily interpret this as a slap at Prince because he wouldn't let The Time perform these larger venues, and that this was perhaps the mentality of The Time during this period, which is when they REALLY brought their ALL to their performances to SPITE Prince, and really turn it out!! Prince and the Revolution "couldn't handle" The Time. Hmmmmm......

All I'm saying is that grudges RUN DEEP, and are sometimes expressed in clever ways. We can all think what we want, but I wouldn't be surprised at ALL if this CD is Morris and Jimmy and Terry, and the rest of the fellas' way at cleverly speaking their peace. And I DIG it! lol

I love Prince. But know he can be, and HAS been a true sonofabitch at times. I kinda hope my theory is right. It's just something to sit back and smile about, and say... Woooowww!!! Makes you wonder. wink

Thanks for the feedback! lol

Good! lol And listen to the song in a WHOLE new light.

Grudges run deep!! lol

If I'm right, I'm glad to see the fellas getting a back through a creatively brilliant song, that's perhaps done in a classic "Prince cross gender way", albeit more STRAIGHTFORWARD! (Ha!) ... rather than settle things the way they did during the Tupac and Biggie era! LOLOL

2elijah... Thanks for your input, btw. But even your brief description sounds like a roundabout way to describe Prince.

Think about Prince's many songs. So many come to mind that depict EXACTLY what you just described!

And even to refer to him as party "girl" is a slick way to dump/crack on him.

I love the song, and I dig this theory! In my opinion, it makes perfect sense!

Have you listened to Role Play and heard the little "... and her" comment made by Jerome? BRILLIANT! And hilarious!!

So I beg to differ.

Toying with gender has ALWAYS been a part of the purple music scene. Prince, more than any other. So what more of a clever way to make a little strike back. lol

And calling Prince "girl" ... well... Prince has always "been in tune with his femine side", so why not take a poke in that direction.

I love it!! Amazing song!!

It's amazing what one can come up with when you got time on your hands. Ok- so interesting theory, you put a lot of time onto it. I respect that. But you also are making SUPER forced leaps even within your own construct to make it work for you. yeah- they have Baby I'm a Star type piano at the end, they also have Janet Jacksons's What Have You Done for me Lately. So maybe it's about Janet and how she used them to reach a huge audience then dumped them for other producers after the fact. She is an actual girl, so you don't have to gender swap with my theory. She wore glasses for awhile and looked like a "sexy school teacher type". "I hope you got something hot" Jimmy and Terry asking Janet if she is ready to make a commitment to something sexier than her previous image. Janet responds "I know I can 'cause I got a lot". Terry says"Actin' sweet and innocent, that's part of her mystique" referring to her previous look and feel when Jesse Johnson produced her. Clearly they are happy with taking her in a new direction (Control) "Oh, I like ya exhibition baby You done caught a groove that's cool" Jellybean wrote a number one song for her called Black Cat which would pit her against the "...the dogs, all seven nonstop"...and....ah...I'm just kidding. Bottom line is none of what you theorize can be proven, nor does it particularly hold together from one point to the next. Fun that you got into it this much however.

LOL... Oh, COME ON, Zannaloaf! lol (Thanks for you response.)

I think your Janet theory is more of a stretch than mine. Mine makes PERFECT SENSE!! In every which way!!! lol Almost line by line!

Prince even refers to himself in one of his songs as "The host with the most". I think it's Jam of the Year. (Let's make a toast. To the host with the most.)

And now that I think about it, Prince is even "MAKING A TOAST" in that song!!! Come ON now!!!!!!

I agree... yes, maybe this is what I want to believe, but listen to it!! If Morris simply changes the title to Toast to the Party MAN, it becomes OBVIOUS!!

Think about THAT!

One more time... please for ME... lol... listen to the song and read my interpretation. TELL ME I'm not on to something brilliant here!! Seriousy.

I love this song, and I"m completely fascinated by this VERY STRONG scandal of a possibility. wink

THIS might be a bit of a stretch, but someone commented on Role Play.

Morris begins the song by saying "Just let your imagination run wild. Play with it."

Just makes you wonder if Morris is inviting us... daring us... tempting us... and almost BEGGING us to get what the group seems to be trying to cleverly say in many of the songs.

Hmmmmmmmmmm........

Might be a stretch, but let's not forget that this CD is 20 years in the making. Alot was suppressed in that time, I'm sure.

Wow

The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

Purplethunder, change the name to "Toast to the Party Man", and then read the lyrics.

Then tell me who's smoking dope!

It's OBVIOUS!
