The Secret? As in Fdeluxe and The Original 7ven??

Interestingly The Secret was the name of the band/project that Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis & Monte Moir were supposedly going to do in the mid 1980s. I think they may even be credited as that on a few records too.

Wow, what's up with all these Prince associates suddenly releasing new music. Is it a conspiracy? "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Prince filed a request for (and probably obtained) copyright over the name Mazarati a few years back, so even though he had very little to do with their first album, it's likely they can't use the name anymore without going through the hassle of a costly trial.
The purpose of Prince doing this is obviously so he can retain the masters of all the Paisley Park releases for future remastered releases. Now, what would happen if Mazarati decided to re-release their second, non-Paisley Park album? I doubt Prince could legally prevent it. And why is Mazarati reuniting? So they can lay claim to their master tapes. Same for all of the bands. Prince won't get exclusive rights to the Paisley Park masters, because he technical has controlled them through Paisley Park Records, as a partner with WB. Just as WB is losing the rights to the master tapes of Mazarati, Sheila E, etc. Prince is losing his rights to those master tapes as well. He may end up as a part owner of the tapes with the bands, if it can be said he was a member of those groups, but I don't think anyone knows for sure what will happen.

No, it's not how it works: Prince CURRENTLY OWNS the rights to most if not all the Paisley Park albums (save his "own" records): they reverted back to him as soon as WB shut down the label in 1993. This was revealed recently by Alan Leeds.
The only albums whose current status of ownership is unsure are the pre-PP side-projects (The Time, What Time Is It?, Vanity 6, Ice Cream Castles, Apollonia 6 and The Glamorous Life) which probably belong to WB, as well as the 2 Kahoru Kohiruimaki albums who most likely belong to TDK.
So basically we end-up in a weird situation where, while Prince might be fighting with WB to get his own albums' rights (+ a few early side-projects), some other artists might at the same time be fighting Prince to get their own masters back.
The main issue is that the profit generated by a Mazarati (or Ingrid Chavez, or Taja Sevelle...) remastered release would NEVER cover the expenses of such a trial, so I doubt any of these artists will fight Prince, or are even considering it today.
Now, while in some cases Prince had little or nothing to do with the recordings and should therefore give them up to the artists, in other cases he just did everything save the lead vocals: The Family is not an album by Paul, Susannah, Jellybean, Eric and Jerome, it's a Prince album with guest vocalists and musicians. At MOST it can be viewed as a collaboration but in this case Clare Fischer should have a share of the masters as well and where does it end??? Any day now,I expect to hear news of an Apollonia 6 reunion....lol

I don't know why Prince is so adamant about controlling the rights to these recordings.Let's be honest here....how much profit can be made from a remastered Mazarati CD? Or a remastered Family CD? Who even buys CDs these days, anyway? These albums only appeal to a small group of fans....namely,those of us who come to this forum...lol.Hardly any of the Paisley Park releases were mainstream hits. I don't know why Prince is acting like he's holding on to a potential goldmine.Furthermore,Prince doesn't even seem that interested in remastering old material. He won't even remaster his own albums! There is a real possibility that he's never gonna do anything with the albums by Mazarati,Jill Jones,The Family and others.

The rights don't revert to Prince, personaly, they revert to Paisley Park Records, a legal entity which Prince completely owns. Paisley Park Records is bound by the same law as every other record company. The same law that allows Prince to claim his masters from WB after 30 years, allows Paisley Park artists to claim their masters from Paisley Park after 30 years. Prince definitely loses the rights to those albums if the artists come forward, in the appropriate time period, and demand them.
The rights to the albums can be reclaimed essentially by whoever's name and picture is on the cover. It doesn't matter who were the session musicians, or writers, or producers. The intent of the law is specifically to give negotiating authority (ie money) to those generally left out of the revenue stream: the folks whose names and faces are on the cover of the album.

Maybe, just maybe Mazarati is just reliving their past for ol' times sake, due to the enthusiasm and feedback which they experienced during their first reunion-concert at the Minneapolis jam from a few years back in the Cabooze venue. Did they state somewhere in an interview that they would be trying to claim their name and master-tapes back? Imo, it's speculation to assume that every other former label-artist has an agenda. And if any master-recording would be claimed, then my guess it would be BrownMark doing it, as it was he who mentored and produced Mazarati's debut album for Paisley. For all we know, nobody knows for sure.

Yeah right. They want to get paid and there is nothing at all the least bit wrong with that. More power to them.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Of course i'm not expecting them to perform live for free. But going after the master-tapes/original name after reading what's been going on with The Family and The Time?...not so sure about that segment.

Susannah said in a recent interview that Prince doesn't own the copyright to the band names but he owns the 'branding' of the names. And that his lawyers are bigger than theirs so they can't afford to fight him in court.
I think perhaps the reason he's denying all these people from using their old names is simply he doesn't want them showing him up in public. The old names obviously have instant recognition and would make it a lot easier to garner media attention. All these bands are filled with talented musicians and I'm sure he doesn't want another Time/Frankenstein on his hands.
What if they all used their original names and put out new records and actually sold a lot of units? Naw, Prince can't have that. He may be rocking the house on his current tours but he ain't selling records like he used to.
