One night before a show, Prince was listening to a rough mix of a Stevie Nicks song called “Stand Back.” Nicks had asked Prince to help her with the song. Bennett, ever the singer, began to sing along with the cassette. “The music stopped and I turned around to look and Prince was staring at me in the mirror,” she said. “He said he didn’t realize that I could sing. I told him that I’d been singing for a long time, that I liked to sing.
“He said, ‘I think we can do something about that,’ and asked if I would be interested in getting involved in the organization,” Bennett said. “Vanity and Susan were already lined up and he needed one more person to fill [Vanity 6, a female vocal trio,] out. I was looking for a spot somewhere that was an original music situation.”
This seems like it might be a tad revisionist.
Prince must have known that Brenda could sing because he had wanted her in the group "The Hookers" with Susan and Jamie Shoop in late '81, before meeting Vanity in early '82. The Vanity 6 album was of course released in August of 1982 and recorded some months prior.
Stevie claims she didn't even write "Stand Back" until her marriage with Kim Anderson which was in January 1983 and it wasn't released until May.
Ah well, it's a nice tale anyway. Best of luck to Brenda with her new material.
There's a interview with Brenda where she says Vanity & Susan was already in place for Vanity 6 and that she was indeed the last one to join the group . We've read for years that Brenda & Susan was suppose to be apart of The Hookers with Jamie Shoop , but maybe whoever put that story out there had their information wrong , but nevertheless it's great to see her again doing things on her own terms : " He's All Black, He's All White, Everybody's Gotta Jam 2Nite, Limouzine ".
