Interview with The Original 7ven Hey everyone,
Last night I was lucky enough to shoot an interview with Morris, Jimmy, Jesse, and Jerome. It's going to air tonight on Fox9 (most likely in the 9pm show) in the Twin Cities and will be up on the website (www.myfox9.com) sometime shortly after it airs. The guys were really gracious with their time and I hope you all enjoy what we put together.
Off to edit 40 minutes down to ~4!

Groovy.
Let us know some if there was anything in the stuff you had to cut that would be of interest to us nerds on here

Here's the story, folks. Hope you enjoy it. Hopefully, by tomorrow morning, a somewhat hastily cut version of the complete interview will be up as well.

Pretty nice interview! Are you the actual interviewer, Maury, or were you part of the station's crew?

I'm one of the photographers. It was originally scheduled to just be Maury and I, but I wrangled two of my fellow shooters in and we made it a 5 camera shoot. Had a blast doing it. Glad you guys enjoyed it.

nice! Like the part about the old man dances...lol

Nice! Thanks for this, love5oneanother. Very cool that you were a part of the shoot. Jesse's revelations about P's notes to him on the early tours were sad. P had/still has some serious control issues (inferiority complex much?). I'm curious how the koolaid drinkers would defend P on that stuff.

Fun interview. I see that the full version is posted now. Looking forward to grabbing a sandwich and watching it. Thanx for letting all of us know. Great interview! Nice to see Prince is keeping it classy! Cease and desist? Space for sale...

I agree, that part is sad.Not only did Prince remove them from certain dates on the tour,he also told them to stop doing certain dances Makes you wonder...what was Prince's problem?

They were originally created as Prince's side project and used to support his band and a cheap way to have a band that tours with him. All of them were under his payroll (for the most part) and when they started showing him up, he wasn't happy with that. He created a monster with The Time and they could have eaten him up in the big cities if they were playing back to back. Prince knew this and would say and do anything to keep them in line and under his thumb. At the end of the day, they were still his employees and working on the tours that he arranged, releasing the records that he produced and showing off an image that he manufactured. People really need to understand that basically The Time was in many ways simply Prince when he was in the mood to sound like a funk/rock band. Because of that, he had an image he saw for the band and wanted no deviation from that. I think this is the best example of how much of a controlling person he is. Looking back over the last 30 years, they all respect him, but they all wish it would have been different and many of us wonder how far they might have gone if they had been given a little more space to grow. The full, UNCUT 43-minute interview was TERRIFIC!!!! It was almost like an addendum to the documentary DVD! Some great stories there (I loved the part about Larry's - of Zapp and Roger fame - girlfriend who wore the see-through dress and how he pulled a gun on Morris, Jesse, and Jerome), and it's great just to see the four guys just sitting there chillin' and reminiscing!
They did have a little fun about the Graffiti Bridge movie and how Prince basically changed their plans around and had them do a movie with him instead of the one they were going to do about themselves, and also about what was REALLY around the corner!!! LMAO!!! I would just LOVE to hang out with these guys for a couple of hours and just kick it!!
I'm so glad the interviewer finally brought up at the end about any plans for after this album and tour. It's good to hear that, for now, they plan on doing more albums and other projects!! That was definitely one of the questions I would've been asking them! Nobody wants to wait another long time to hear these funky bruthas again!
LONG LIVE THE ORIGINAL 7VEN!!!!!

Thanks, that was great!
I love hearing those in depth stories and seeing how the bond between the fellas has withstood the test of time. It shows in the excellence of their new cd.
That thing about Larry from Zapp with the gun was crazy! Just thinking how they could have had a tragedy similar to what eventually happened gives me the willies.
And I'm dying to know more about the movie that never got made, especially since it was based on real life events. Pity it never materialized.
I hope we get more interviews like this from the O7...I'd like to know more about how they balance parenthood with everything else as well as more about the songs from Condensate and other ideas they are working on.
They seem to realize how much it means to us to see them back together and I wish them all the best. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Jesse commandeered that shit, didn't he??! Lol! But hey, that's how the best stories come out, so I'm cool with that!

Of course, had I read ALL of your first post, I would've seen that your name was Tim, so I wouldn't have even needed to ask! Lol! All I saw was the link and proceeded to get Stacy Adams ready!

^^I thought Jungle Fever was by Stevie Wonder. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

if they made the film now it could end up like a funked up episode of ally mcbeal with johnnie cochran representing THE TIME.
johnnie could seek council from the ghost of rick james and larry blackmon could make a cameo as a key witness.
did you see what i did there? holding something together that is falling apart

Really nice interview there. Thanks for sharing. I really like these guys together, and the connection that they have. @ the chicken grease on Morris Day's designer shoe.

i just remembered johnnie cochran died in 2005 - so it would be his ghost representing them - the rick james angle still works.

Jam and Terry come off as cool well adjusted folks. That's something you never even think of saying about almost anyone in the entertainment industry, much less famous musicians. [Edited 11/10/11 21:44pm]
