As we all know, The Time has a new CD out called Condensate. The group was made to use a different name, but they're The Original 7ven... The Band Formerly Known as the Time.

Prince obviously had no input in this project, but he had nearly COMPLETE input into what the Time could and could not do back when he formed and produced the group as his "classier slapstick" alter ego.

I hope you've all paid attention to one GREAT song in particular on their new CD called "Toast to the Party Girl".

It's brilliant. It's clever. And it's an AMAZINGLY FASCINATING dig at Prince!!

The lyrics are as follows, with my interpreted translation.

Every time show down

hangin out greetin' fans (There used to be band battles in Minneapolis... aka "showdowns")

Signin' autographs

In walks a sexy school teacher type

Said she wanna meet the band (This is Prince, and his "effeminate" way, entering when perhaps band members that would become The Time were signing autographs)

Now if you wanna teach me somethin' baby go ahead make your move

I hope you got something hot (This is Morris expressing interest with what Prince has in mind for the time)

I know I can 'cause I got alot (Female voice. Prince responding.)

Then bring it on, let me see what you got (Morris looking forward to The Time project.)

CHORUS:

I started playin' with it

peeped what her game's about (This is Morris toying with the songs that Prince has written

Got the girl so turned on

She turned the party out (Prince was excited, and did a great job with the Time project)

Actin' sweet and innocent, that's part of her mystique (Think of Prince on American Bandstand!!)

But underneathe it she's a closet freak (Do I really need to explain who might easily be considered a closet freak... or perhaps "control" freak???)

Toast to the party girl (A toast/thanks to Prince for putting the Time project together)

Come on, let's party

(Before I continue... think "Party til it's 1999"... or Party-Up... or Party Man. How many songs has Prince referred to partying??? lol)

Oh, I like ya exhibition baby

You done caught a groove that's cool (Morris liking what Prince has put together. "Cool" might even be a direct song reference!)

Wherever you wanna take it honey, I'm gonna leave that up to you (Needs no definition. Prince was the producer)

If you're the thrill seeker type that craves the lap of luxury

I'll let you train the dogs, all seven nonstop (Morris allowing Prince to "train" The 7 members of The Time... with the 7th being Jerome, of course.)

And I'm gonna set it off, come on baby, let's rock. (Prince. Come on, let's work.)

CHORUS

Girl, you are the party superstar

You love performing your greatest hits (Hello!!! How many times has Prince said "We got too many hits" during his concerts, in reference to his greatest hits??)

You're so amazing, so amazing

How did you get so gifted (Easily a Prince reference)

Things you do with those lips (Easily a sly Prince reference)

Doin' the dance hall roll call

Knock one down and pulling one in (A reference to Prince being with Vanity... and Jill... and Susan... and many others?)

Then she said

What is your desire? (Interesting how this is spoken in "typical Prince schtick". A Prince ultimatum to Morris and members of The Time????? Hmmmmm)

It was getting intense

She's like kryptonite to men (Perhaps a reference to creative battles in which members had no control, and were forced to do his bidding. The Time members were weak! They had no power. They had to play behind a curtain. Show up on time. Couldn't produce for other artists, or get fired. (Jimmy Jam/Terry Lewis) Hmmm...

So that's why I propose a toast

To the party girl, so raise your glass

To the party girl with the most

Ooh, ooh, ooh, baby

CHORUS

The toast could be a backhanded "thanks" to the self-proclaimed "Party Man". A thank you for his assistance, and for who they are now.

However, if you listen longer, Morris ends the song with his prototypical "You ain't got to go home, but you got the get the hell outta here"... as if to say, "You get your thanks, but now, you got to get the hell out of this project!!"

AMAZING Song! I'm fascinated by it!!

The music toward the end of this song includes the "chili sauce guitar riff", allusions to the Kiss sound, and early Prince keyboard stylings. It also pays homage to Baby I'm a Star with the way it sounds towards the end. (Think of Purple Rain!)

This song is a DIRECT backward clever DIG at Prince. And I'm okay with that. BUT WOW... what a clever song.

And for The Original 7ven to refer to Prince as "The Party Girl"... WOW! Just makes you wonder what inner beef must exist!

This is my interpretation, but it would be hard to convince me that this song is NOT about Prince. It's fascinating when you study the lyrics, and mentally replace Prince as the Party Girl.

Wow!!!!

as I songwriter, I truly respect how you went in and dissected every lyric, this is pretty impressive, whether accurate or not, nice job!

Hey Wis... it just makes sense. I'm not sure if you read all of the comments here, but even moreso than my original post, I made additional comment posts that just make it all seem to come together.

True... you have your "dismissers" here... and that's fine. But when you listen to the song, it's little intricacies, and musical allusions, only the group themselves could tell me any different. And even THEN, I wouldn't expect them to say "yes". lol

Within every verse, there's a connection, and it all amounts to too much to be a coincidence.

And even if it's NOT about Prince... so what's this song about then??? The group singing praise to a woman who "did" the whole band??? I dont think they'd write and release a song like that... glorifying that kind of woman.

So if you listen to it in a literal sense, it's not a "commendable toast", if that makes sense.

I still think it's about Prince. Change "girl" to "man", and there it is!! Perfect symmetry.

Cheers!

The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

On a subconcious level I can see this, but if this was conciously about P, Morris sounds a bit too excited about the party girl on the track for me to be comfortable with this concept. lol

Maybe, it is a tribut to Prince who 'did' the whole band?

as in 'train' 'the dogs' 'all seven nonstop'

It's about Prince doing the whole band doggy style.

What I don't get is why your interpretation would be scandalous?

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

lol... Interesting response. If you don't get why my interpretation would be scandalous... then more power to you! lol Thanks for your feedback. Great pic, by the way. lol

And yeah, it's about Prince. smile
