What's The Story Behind My Summertime Thang & The Latest Fashion?

I've always wondered who wrote the song and why there are two different versions of pretty much the same song (sans lyrics). Does anyone know?

Nicholas

There are actually 3 versions

the unreleased version of Summertime Thang

the Pandemonium version of Summertime Thang

and then the Latest Fashion

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Havn't heard it in a while, but I seem to remember the unreleased "my summertime thang" has some long ass story near the end of it? Anyone know what Iam talking about LOL. Pretty sure it was not on the released version?

I like both versions of "the latest fashion". Both very different. Who was the female on the original version? Is it Jill Jones?

According to wikipedia Prince wrote 'The Latest Fashion' and it was performed with the Time. Stands to reason he at least wrote the music for 'Summertime Thang'. Not sure about the lyrics though.

I'd like to know how much involvement did The Time have with "My Summertime Thang". Only because there are samples from "Skillet" all over the instrumental break. I can't see Prince inserting those in there since "Skillet" isn't his song.

edit: actually most of the samples are from the skit "Cooking Class". Prince using them doesn't seem so strange now (it sounds like there was more of the skit that wasn't used). Forget everything I said. smile

From The Vault:

My Summertime Thang is the 14th track (eleventh and final song) on The Time's fourth album Pandemonium, and is written and produced by Prince (but credited to The Time). Prince also performs heavily on the song, but is uncredited.

Initial tracking took place on 27 March, 1983 (the day after Jungle Love, and the same day as Cloreen Baconskin, during a two-day break from the 1999 Tour), at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA. The track was intended for The Time's third album Ice Cream Castle, but it is not known if the track was included on any configurations of the album. In July, 1989, Prince gave the track (along with Pickle, You're All I Want, U Should Be Mine, Wet Dream Cousin, Vibrator, The Max and XYZ) to Eric Leeds to consider reworking for a new Madhouse album (later called 26, which later evolved into Eric Leeds' solo album Times Squared). Eric Leeds did not choose this track to develop further, however. Additional recording on The Time's version took place between June and September, 1989, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA. One version contains lyrics from the Graffiti Bridge movie script, and Morris Day demonstrates his various dances (mostly named after other tracks by The Time: "the horse", "the oak tree", "Chili Sauce", "Murph Drag" and "The Bird". The track was later included as the tenth and final track on The Time's proposed fourth album Corporate World, which later morphed into Pandemonium. The music from the track was also reused on the version of The Latest Fashion which was included on the Graffiti Bridge album.

So, Prince and produced both versions? Just seems odd. Has he ever re-worked and re-lyriced another song like this?

Also another one that was released track/unreleased track was Purple Rain/Gotta Shake This Feeling. Thought I'd mention it just due to the popularity of the released song.
