Prince has said many a times how fearful he was of the time and his own bandmates at times cause they could kick his ass on stage. it just didn't start with the time, cause prince got pissed at mico for getting women that he wanted and sabatoged mico a few times. but as 4 name association there is a difference between the time and say carmen electrca. now no one puts two and two 2gether when it comes 2 her name or it's barely mentioned in articles about her, but someone like the time who was in prince's biggest movie to date, there is a association instantly.
so say the comparisons from condensate 2 prince's recent material is mentioned solely cause the foundation of the rivalry has been documentented for years. no one is gonna compare sheila e to prince simply cause it was never put out there that there was a rivalry. flyte tyme used 2 battle grand central and other bands back in the days so it's the apirit of that competetion that fans are recognizing in this thread about prince's material.

I was a bit hard on this CD after my first listen - first impressions left me really underwhelmed, but the more I listen to it, the more I find to like. It just needed time to percolate a bit with me.
The only track I find offensive is the truly horrible 'Hey Yo' which is one of those cringeworthy 'in the club' type tracks. Did Jam/Lewis write this for Rebecca Black feat. Lil' Whoever? Ick.
A lot of what sounded modern and "urban" on first listen is just sparse drum patterns, a lot like Release It or something. The more organic sounding drums work well, but there are still some really classic sounding Time tracks.

Yeah, Hey Yo is horrid. It's one of three misses for me but that still leaves a solid eleven song album which blows anything and everything Prince has done of late out the park. Space for sale... |

no need 2 watch the dvd's since i had those concerts the minute they dropped and was hoping prince would have continued in these type of set lists. but i'm not talking about the time performing live now because of their lack of catalogue material. but let's just say we take the time still doing the same songs from 30 years ago, isn't prince relying on 3 albums only in his recent touring material too? i mean i don't know if u saw the welcome 2 america tour but i could count on my one hand how many times prince did any recent material during that tour. but if the time wasn't kicking his ass on stage back in the 80's then there shouldn't have been the need 2 bump them from the bill in major markets now would there have been? man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81 |

Yeah but that's comparing the Time for the past 30 years to Prince the past year which I continue to believe is an unfair comparison. Only since the Lotusflower CD I noticed he was heavy on the old hits, but for the 3121 era and prior he did alot of his new hits. |

I have attended 8 shows from the last european tour and I have seen very various setlists and amazing long and intense gigs. You guys are so fucking unfair when it comes to P. He can do no right for sure.
I really think these associated artists have become a bit pathetic doing the same tricks over and over over the years.
Prince at least has tried many different genres. He has failed sometimes. But at least he has tried.
Now yeah I agree 20Ten is not his best CD ever obviously! But the day The Time will come up with music as adventurous as TRC, I'll change my mind.
But... it will never happen unfortunately.

perhaps but one night alone tour, 3121 era which i was personally apart of, there were plenty of new songs being played. My only issue with concerts now-a-days are those unnecessary covers [Edited 10/25/11 11:14am] |

i wouldn't call it "unfair" i would call it as it is, calling prince on his own shit. we are consumers of product and can like or dislike the product. not everyone in this thread likes the new album by the O7 so how does that differ from calling prince on his material output? man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81 |

Uh, again I said and it seems this has hit a tender spot with some, that I think the praise is half and half. You really really like the album, ok fine. Congratulations. Bully for you.
But regarding the name change thanks for pointing out that Morris has been "TOURING" using the name "Morris Day and The Time". Good point. And of those various incarnations of that touring act at no time were all the original members of The Time in that TOURING band and at no time did that "TOURING" band put out an album of new material under the name "The Time".
Die hard fans knew that when they went to see the group they were not seeing all of the original members thus the use of the name Morris Day and The Time.
The name "The Time" is synonymous with Prince involement in writing and/or production. There is none on this album which seems to be in their favor.
Why didn't they go back to the pre-Prince name of Flyte Time again?
I was speaking with another Orger about this. I feel that there are some missing pieces of the story. All we know is that they went to Prince and he said no he owns the name, but then the story stops there. We don't know what his reasoning was, what the rationale was, and on the Tom Joyner show interview, Jimmy Jam said they could not reach an agreement, what exactly does that mean. In the Doc Funkenberry interview, they said "business is business"....what does that mean???? On the documentary, when Morris brought it up for discussion, Jesse sort of turned the conversation in another direction. yeah, we can blame Prince and be mad at him and feel what he did was wrong, but somehow in my gut feeling, I feel there is more to the story and the guys are being quiet about that part....hopefully some day, we can find out the details.
[Edited 10/25/11 7:50am]
Thanks for responding. I have not read or heard any of these interviews. With that said, yeah there sounds like more is going on that P just being a pain. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Not sure how someone cannot feel any of it. It's so diverse, there's at least something for everyone -- unless you just don't like Morris' vocals. [/qu As far as the Time's material I do like his voice. I just think the songs are boring , forgettable, and missing that sound they use to have. I love the Time but this cd isn't convincing me they're still cool. |

I wish the fuckers that wanna still champion Prince in some manner would get the hell outta this thread. Take your shit back to the M&M group! This is about the O7ven's schweet ass album, "Condensate". People only compare it to some of Prince recent output because for one, we're on a damn Prince site (and let's not forget the fellas brought him up in their documentary too), and two, um, Prince HIMSELF has manufactured a "rivalry" with these guys for damn near their entire existence. So, once a comparison comes up, you wanna get your panties in a bunch and get all butt hurt and say people are being haters?! GTFOHWTBS! Hell, I've heard people compare this album to "Gaslight"! Are they fDeluxe haters now too?!
Anyway, back to my boys..."GoHomeToYoMan" is funny as shit. I was crackin' up listening to them verses! Hell, "Faithful" has got a couple of funny "playa Morris" lines in it too. I just hope radio comes around and gives this album a fair spin. I don't really listen to radio, so even if they were all over it right now, I wouldn't know. But something tells me, not too many folk know that they got back together and just released an album besides us die-hards. And that would be a shame for a very good album such as this. Good, grown, funky, and fun. |

what's wrong with championing Prince in some manner as you put it if that is what people feel when it comes to comparing this album and the whole Time story which involves Prince? aren't they entitled to their opinions too? and the only ones who seem to be getting their panties in a bunch are those who have a problem with some positivity being thrown to Prince when comparing. and for every fam word that gets thrown out in a derogatory manner, as it was done in a previous post, yes expect the hater word to get thrown back at them. and this is coming from someone who is on her 20th spin of the Condensate cd btw. I too think it rocks beyond belief!
