Fdeluxe show (Largo in L.A.) review A fun show! Jellybean played guitar and the man can jam! Wendy & Lisa joined them for a few of their songs (Are You My Baby, etc.) and added extra funk to The Family songs. Andre Cymone was there as well but didn't play. The new stuff sounds pretty good and they ended the show with a great High Fashion and Mutiny medley. I am really tired right now so I am not making a setlist, etc. People came from all over. I talked to someone who flew all the way from London to see this show (she did the same for the Family Jamm show!). Overall, the show was enjoyable and the band signed the new CD afterwards and talked to the fans. They were exceptionally cool and a lot of fun.
The CD is really good. I gave it a listen on the drive home and it has a similar vibe to The Family but it feels more mature. It is like the band has grown up, but there is still love and sex on their menu. Not the sort of sex that Prince STILL seems to try to be clever about (Elixer- which may be the worst sexual pun EVER and Prince thought he was so clever he named the album after it). The fdeluxe album is really mature in it's longing for love. There is plenty of funk on it as well, but there are some really touching songs as well (Over the Canyon for example). If you enjoyed The Family album, I'd try this one on for size. 25 years later, but 25 years of growth. Great to hear them back together and thanx guys for putting on a fun show. Thank you also to W&L for showin' up and adding to the party. The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. Thanks for the review. A group of us are going to the show in NYC on Oct. 29th.
I have heard the album, but wasn't that thrilled with it. I don't have a copy, so maybe I'll have a different opinion after another listen. "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

NYC? I'll be in town and may check it out too! I don't care for the cd, songs just didn't move me and thought they were forgettable but I've always said I'm sure their live show will be enjoyable. See you there!

Great to hear!! Love the cd. The more I listen the more I like it even more than the original. And I wore my vinyl out back in the day. Great melodies and lyrics on the new material. Oops. I may ave just earned a certain someone's wrath.

I caught the show last night and I wasn't impressed. They had a fun, funky sound but I thought of the songs sounded very similar. Susannah was really enthusiastic and tried very hard to keep the energy up with her dancing, which was cute but truthfully kinda awkward at times. She kinda reminded me of the Elaine character dancing from Seinfeld. I'm sorry I'm not trying to be unkind, just honest. It was great to see Wendy and Lisa...very nostalgic, but as far as their stage presence and live performances go they really aren't anything very out of the ordinary without HIM. This was obvious sorry to say...

Prince brings the magic. It's just the way it is. Since you brought it up... I saw the Loring show and totally disagree. The songs are strong melodies, and are far funkier than the Vegas sounding show I saw Prince perform. This is a BAND. Not a performer with a support system, which is my feeling about princes latest shows. Sure he plays great. But that is all. The band brings zip. I'll also take the music on Gaslight over anything I've heard from prince in 10 years. Princes magic has become so so illusion. I wish I didn't think that but I do. Just my take of course. And we are all entitled to our own takes.

I am hoping they get to the UK at some stage. Anyone else know who has turned up at their gigs? So far there's been reports of Andre Cymone, Bobby Z, Wendy & Lisa. Wonder how long it will be until Prince shows up?

Was there last night. The Good: The band. The High Fashion/Mutiny Jams were amazing and the musicianship is second to none. St. Paul is a class act and Susannah is beautiful and a good singer. It's always a priviledge to hear Eric L play and Jellybean showed us that he's just as good a guitar player as he is a drummer.
The Bad: The venue. Run down, seating only vibe with horrible sound. Constant feed back hum in the background and a shocking sound mix that buried the vocals. And Wendy & Lisa, quite frankly. If I'm being honest, going to see Wendy & lisa is like turning up to a GLAAD event these days. Fine, but this is THE FAMILY...it just didn't work to see those guys bring the funk to an audience of about 60% bemused-looking lesbians, sorry. You knew you were in trouble when St. Paul had to prompt everybody to get up out of their seats for High Fashion! Please! Susannah brought W&L on by saying it was a family event but I regret to say it was a bad move. Wendy was pretty game, and I was struck once again at how good a guitar player she is. Lisa, on the other hand, was an embarressment, and caused a WTF moment when she subjected the crowd to hamfisted dirge in the middle of a funk workout. I don't mean this to be a character assassination but she should really retire herself from this part of her musical legacy right now - I get the sense that she's mocking it a bit - and its getting a bit tiring for the rest of us fans.
Anyway, sorry to be harsh about W&L, but thats how I saw it. FDeluxe proper are still the business and NY audiences are in for a great night.

It's not funny that Prince has fallen to a Vegas review dude. I had WAY higher hopes after spending so many hours listening how good he should have ended up after the skill set he was blessed with. Ego will kill you.

I totally agree with you about the sound system. There was a horrible hum from Wendy's guitar and I couldn't believe that the sound guy didn't fix that. I wear earplugs at shows (my ears are already damaged from so many concerts, so I don't take chances anymore), and I could still hear it through them.

The show was brilliant. FDeluxe was off the chart funky and just nailed the old stuff and the new material. Wendy & Lisa were brilliant as usual, even though I see that some people are totally lost on their sense of humor.
The new album is totally worth the wait. At least 7 of the songs on there are instant favorites for me, the others are growing on my though.
What a great time to be a fan of the MPLS sound. Prince may be the purple Yoda, but Wendy & Lisa and Eric Leeds also sit on the Jedi Council.
