Susannah, St Paul, Eric, Jellybean, JP, Oliver, and some JB wannabee (sorry, my opinion)

Started about 830pm

Opened with Screams of Passion, next Gaslight. I'm not the type to go to a show and text myself and watch the show through a cam lens...so these are the songs I remember.

High Fashion

Mutiny

River Run Dry (with a shout out to Bobby Z and wife, who was in the audience.

Nothing Compares 2 U

Desire

...and a bunch of new stuff I didn't know.

No mention of Prince.

Special guest was Ricky Peterson (just saw him playing here with Stevie Nicks, so was hoping he would jump into the infamous keyboard riff...just kidding)

Ended about 10:30pm

Jerome wannabee. Actually he was quite talented. He has switching back and forth with Jellybean, so Jellybean could play guitar. At one point though he was standing in front of the drums with a setup like Jerome had in The Screams of Passion video, so I guess that's what reminded of it.

Oh ok, as long as he's a talented version of Jerome, I'm good with that lol

What did you think of the new songs?

Well the band is funky as all get out, so everything sounded good. They slowed it down towards the end with a slow song. Susannah and St. Paul were alone on stage, sharing a stool in front of a keyboard. Eric came out and did a sax solo. I really like that song, but don't know the name of it. A lot of funky numbers though! Pretty sure you'll like it.

I think the song may be When You Go, it's pretty stripped of instruments and that stage looked pretty bare lol Checking out those pics, looks like a great show. Too bad pictures aren't allowed at Largo!

The show was amazing & the band is funky as get out! Jellybean switched between guitar & drums, St Paul sang lead and played bass & some keyboards, Eric Leeds was on sax, flute & keyboards, Susannah on lead vocals & a little percussion. The extra musicians included Oliver Leiber on lead guitar (he wrote Paula abduks biggest hits & has written for everyone from Aretha to Kesha), Mario Dawson on drums & jp DeLaire on keyboards.
There was a nice mix of old & new songs. I can't remember all the names but there was a few like Lover, Gaslight, sanctified and when you go that I figured out the names of. The new stuff is funky and while it obviously pays homage to the first album it's also fresh & current without trying to be top 40 urban pop.

It's a Family affair for the band fDeluxe

After being put in a band by Prince 25 years ago, vocalists Paul Peterson and Susannah Melvoin reunite in fDeluxe.

fDeluxe is the "inevitable" reunion of the Prince-formed the Family, with Susannah Melvoin and Paul Peterson.

Photo: Steve Parke,

Cart

When they started, they got paid by Prince to record an album, rehearse for a year and play just one gig.

Three decades later, the musicians have regrouped, spent four years (and their own money) putting together their second album and booked five gigs, including a CD release party Friday in the city where the Family was born, Minneapolis.

"The decision [to reunite] was inevitable," Susannah Melvoin said from Los Angeles as she joined co-lead singer Paul Peterson (aka St. Paul) via Skype on Sunday. "No matter how out-of-pocket we've been [moneywise], it's been the best thing for our souls."

"We were always in touch with each other throughout all those years," said Peterson, who lives in Edina. "We enjoy being around each other. We have a lot in common."

She turned 47 this year and he will next month. They each have two daughters. They come from musical families but have been in the shadow of other siblings. (She's the twin of Wendy Melvoin, Prince's ex-guitarist; he's the kid brother of Linda, Billy, Patty and Ricky Peterson, all accomplished jazz figures.) Both have made their living in the music business out of the spotlight: Melvoin as a backup singer (Seal, Roger Waters, Donna Summer) and songwriter (Madonna, Eric Clapton, Doyle Bramhall II) and Peterson as a sideman (Donny Osmond, Kenny Loggins, Oleta Adams), songwriter (Paula Abdul, George Benson, the Corrs) and teacher (Minneapolis Media Institute).

New moniker required

Melvoin and Peterson have put the Family back together but with a new moniker, fDeluxe. That's because of one other thing they have in common -- strained relationships with Prince, who founded the Family in 1985 and still owns the rights to the name. Melvoin was his fiancée and co-writer for a few years but eventually broke off their engagement. Peterson was a Prince protégé, plucked right from high school as a replacement in the Time for the filming of "Purple Rain" and groomed for the Family but he left for a solo career that included two national releases that didn't exactly take off.

So when it came time to ask permission to resurrect the Family, Peterson had a long visit at Paisley Park. "It was a good conversation," he said, referring to it as more man-to-man than mentor-to-pupil. But Prince said "no" --the same message he delivered to Melvoin when she reached out to him.

The new fDeluxe album, "Gaslight" -- which also features original Family members Eric Leeds (who has worked with Prince, Estaire Godinez, Sheila E and others) on saxophone and Jellybean Johnson (who still tours with Morris Day & the Time) on drums and guitar -- is both a continuation of the Family and a journey in new directions. In other words, it's got plenty of sanctified funk, dreamy pop, soulful duets and jazzy saxophone.

"I would say we paid 20 percent [attention] to the history of the Family record and the other 80 percent was really Paul and myself putting ourselves into a fully realized band," Melvoin said.

For the concerts (including gigs in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York), fDeluxe will feature material from both "Gaslight" and "The Family," including the R&B hit "Screams of Passion" and "Nothing Compares 2 U," which Prince wrote for Melvoin, long before he gave it to Sinéad O'Connor.

?uestlove is big fan

Another member of Prince's royal court, Sheila E, is actually responsible for the Family reunion. In 2003, she invited the group to appear at a charity benefit in San Francisco. "It was so satisfying, so musically nourishing, so free," Melvoin recalled. "We had one hour of rehearsal and Paul and I just got offstage and we were like 'Let's go finish what we started.'"

But it turned out that she was pregnant. So nothing happened until 2007, when the Roots invited the Family to play at their annual pre-Grammys party. "When I met [Roots leader/drummer] ?uestlove, he was bowing in front of me and I had no idea why," Melvoin said. "He said 'The Family' was like one of his top 10 favorite records in the world."

Peterson traveled periodically to Los Angeles, staying in Melvoin's garage, which has a recording studio where they hatched a new album. Fans have helped underwrite the project and in turn got to hear demo tapes and watch some of the recording sessions via the Internet.

Melvoin and Peterson would like to get a copy of "Gaslight" to Prince.

"Prince was the great author of all these bands that are books in his life," she said. "This particular book he put together unfortunately didn't get finished. We took the characters and we're finishing the story. We are the authors of our own lives. We're not trying to impress Prince in any way. This record wasn't made for him; this record was made completely for us and our fans."

fDeluxe @ Loring Theater, 9.16.2011

Before the show
Quite the evening was had here in Minneapolis last night. fDeluxe, comprised of four original members of Prince protégé band The Family, performed their official debut gig at the Loring Theater. My brother and I had been tossing around whether or not to go, but when I checked the venue's website earlier in the week and saw 2 aisle seats available in the center front row of the balcony I nabbed 'em up real quick-like.

Before the show we hung out for a while in the lobby, checking out the merchandise table while listening to a live DJ mixing up some tunes. We spotted a couple of local celebs, notably MN Vikings hall-of-famer Carl Eller and Revolution drummer Bobby Z., who looked terrific.
When we headed up to our seats at around 7:50 it was clear that the rest of the audience was taking their own sweet damn time, which made me wonder if the show was a sell out. By 8:30, however, the place was packed and rarin' to go. From my balcony seat I recognized my longtime blog friend Kyle in the VIP section on the floor. After the show we saw each other lobby and chatted for a little, but there was so much energy around the band's whereabouts that it was easy to get distracted (It was great to finally meet you in person, Kyle!).
The stage
The stage was set-up to resemble a living room, complete with a couch, vintage vacuum cleaner, infant high-chair, a bass, six guitars...you get the idea (see pic, left). The band came out and gave a nicely paced, loose, and often hot & funky performance in front of a friendly hometown audience. St. Paul, Susannah, Eric, and Jellybean looked great and put in 100%+. One of the biggest surprises for me was seeing Jellybean upfront playing guitar for most of the show. The man ain't no slouch! During the final encore he ripped into a wicked guitar solo that could have given both Jesse Johnson and Prince a run for their money.
And might I just say a word about Mr. Eric Leeds. In fact, one word is enough: LEGEND. Leeds played keys, flute, and sax throughout last night's show, but it was his signature sax playing that put the fDeluxe stamp on the whole shindig. When Leeds plays you KNOW who's saxophone it is, and he was simply on top of his game last night. I gots myself the chills a couple of times.
Ticket
St. Paul Peterson appeared genuinely proud and happy to be performing with his bandmates, chatting it up with the audience, coming off as your every day Minnesotan, not some big-headed rockstar. He seemed clearly his element.
Then there was Miss Susannah. Oh my goodness. First of all, the lady's got some pipes. She put her heart into last night's gig and seemed to be having a blast the whole time. During a post-show meet & greet I mentioned to her how much she commanded the stage, and she acknowledged that she does tend to go crazy when she's up there doing her thing. She looked fantastic in a black long-sleeved fitted dress and very high heels. Personally, I couldn't keep my eyes off of her.
fDeluxe setlist, 9.16.2011:
  • Screams of Passion
  • Gaslight
  • Sanctified
  • Over the Canyon
  • Nothing Compares 2 U
  • Leeds Line
  • Desire
  • Beautiful You
  • Lover
  • River Run Dry (first verse & chorus only, with props to Bobby Z. who stood up from the audience)
  • @8
  • -snippet of Earth Wind & Fire's "That's The Way of The World"-
  • High Fashion
  • Mutiny (!)
  • Encore:
    • When You Go (lovely Paul/Susannah piano duet + Eric on sax)
    • Drummers and Healers
After the show my bro and I were waiting for the band to arrive at the autograph table in the lobby (which was developing a certain funk of its own, on account of all the bodies lingering around), when Kyle alerted me that the band was hanging out down by the stage (Thanks again Kyle!!). I got to Eric first, who was interested in the 12" EP I handed him, saying it was the first time he'd seen it (St. Paul told me that the EPs were German imports that had arrived just prior to the show). It was surreal to stand next to Eric Leeds watching him take the vinyl out of its sleeve - he actually held it horizontally at eye level like he was inspecting it to make sure it met his personal standards. He didn't have a Sharpie on him (it was at the autograph table out in the lobby!), but he pulled out a standard pen to autograph the sleeve for me. He was very friendly and easy-going, just as I would have expected.
Next was Mr. Johnson. Very cordial, with Sharpie in hand. As he was signing my record I asked if the upcoming Original 7ven (aka The TIME) album was going to be available on vinyl, and he seemed quite certain that it would be. Side note: The man has a million dollar smile, and appears very comfortable with who and where he is at this point in his life. A very positive individual.
St. Paul was just as friendly, happy to hear that we enjoyed the show. I asked him when the upcoming L.A. show(s) were happening (I think he said "22-23"). For those of you in and around Los Angeles I highly recommend that you GO to see this band. Wendy and Lisa are going to be performing with them, just in case you needed a little extra incentive.
The last to sign my EP was Susannah, who was so gracious, laid back, and beautiful in her post-show jeans and flip-flops. She asked me if the show was what I had expected, and I told her it was exactly what I expected and more - especially the last 8 minutes of the show when the band went into a free-form jam that was funky as hell. When my brother got to Susannah she said "So nobody's asked you your name before signing this?", as if to say "how rude of them!". So she wrote Jay's name in the top left corner before autographing it herself (see pic of Jay's signed EP, above left).
Thanks to Eric, Jellybean, Susannah & Paul for an incredible night. If we weren't already devoted lifelong fans we certainly would be now. I'm looking forward to seeing where this new chapter of the band's history takes you next!

She looked fantastic in a black long-sleeved fitted dress and very high heels. Personally, I couldn't keep my eyes off of her.

Interesting that Paul personally went to Paisley Park to talk to Prince about "The Family" name. And he STILL said no, as we obviously know. There Paul was, trying to mend any OLD broken fences, and Prince still wanted to be a dick about it.

Pffft. Whatever. They're better off being completely out from under the Prince umbrella anyway, so good riddance. Chump. disbelief
