damn. you are right. Ignore cbarnes3121 - he thinks Prince operates on a level that dosn't allow for things like copying a beat or riff even tho he has done it numerous times...JUST LIKE ANY MUSICIAN. Little Red Corvette=Up the Ladder to the Roof chorus

http://youtu.be/9v1S-ypz5a4

There's a part of a live Billy Preston song from the 70s that is the same as a main part of the Purple Rain chorus...then Johhny Lang stole the opening chord progressin on this song

http://youtu.be/cxixw06iy7k

Don't get so bent out of shape just becasue someone points out that musicians swipe stuff form each other...lol.

^ No, but you are naive to think that Prince would never copy anyone else, even the greatest artists do at some point. I mean listen to Faithfully by Journey and then listen to Purple Rain....hmm...

If that's not obvious enough for you, listen to 'Guitar' and then listen to U2's I will follow...

Some fans believe dude is an island. Its usually because most of what they listen to is Prince. He's ripped off a lot of artists but he does it very cleverly and a lot of people don't catch it.

...yeah because prince has never removed the bassline from one of this tracks before??!! how about when doves cry or kiss? you don't need a phd to know art influences art. the film taxi driver is heavily influenced by the red shoes, the searchers, pickpocket and the writings of dostoevsky. talent borrows, genius steals. nothing new there.

going back to the point you were trying to make the high-pitched synth line sounds most like bernie worrell and was a big part of the parliament / funkadelic sound which was later heavily sampled by dr dre. once the westcoast had tired of it and the p funk all stars has packed up their instruments and gone home prince jumped on it.

in next weeks class we can discuss which came first - the specials or prince buster.

Somebody mentioned this before. It doesn't diminish Prince in any way though. Prince has his songwriting methods and at the end of the day we REALLY dig most of his work. If anyone looks bad when these things come to light, it's the music critics and biographers who GUSH ENDLESSLY and project labels onto Prince that are incorrect. I don't believe Prince has ever claimed to be more than what he is and as an artist he has few peers.

exactly. Thought the whole "no peers" thing gets a little trite since there ARE equally talented musicians and writers whether one likes their style or not. Performers on his level... those are harder to find. But never say never.

Agreed - this is an observation it's not tearing Prince down in any way. It is however being realistic and not burying your head in the sand over facts.

Everybody on this site likes Prince (to varying degrees) but not everybody is a fanbot who is willing to pretend Prince is the only musician on the planet. He has always lifted stuff but so have many other artists. It is what it is. Fanbots seem to always come into a thread and turn every positive thread about anyone else into a Prince thread. How about we keep this one about Andre?

So, who's got the AC re-release?

Hmmmmm, I would have to agree. The first seconds of the song resembles Black Sweat. Prince funked up his version so it sounds slicker, polished, and pops more. But yeah, I can hear it too.

I kinda don't hear it in "Neon Pussycat", but some would say that Vanity 6's "Make-Up" sounds a lot like Keni Burke's "You're The Best"

There are similarities but I don't think Prince went back to AC and decided to steal a drum pattern.

Lets be real here.

Why not? He worked with Andre on this album back in 85, and gave him 'The Dance Electric', so I don't think he would have concerns on 'borrowing' (shall we say) a drum pattern from him.

Hell, i sometimes think Prince wrote more than that song, such as Book Of Love...sound v.princey..

I don't hear it. I hear some passing similarities to 17 Days and Pleasure Principle, but not Black Sweat.

so. you think that mentioning that Prince is like any other musician by being influenced or grabbing a beat is tearing him down? So you can ONLY be a fan by butt kissing and saying yes? Dontcha think that is part of what killed MJ? Not saying.."um...dude what you are doing is f%cked UP! Stop it go and get therapy." Instead they all kissed his butt and took his money. Efan- JUST the beat. nothing more. Funq- the point is you don't really know . Neither do we. It's just an observation.

To be an arrogant elitist---

I just think it is hilarious that "NOW" we know where this beat came from.

Um? What? lol

I have recognized the similiar hi-hat stutter the second I heard this track.

I also doubt that Andre was the first to incorporate that particular technique.

Knowing that Prince was in possession of one of the earliest Linn LM-1 machines leads me to believe that he had experimented with the decayed hats long before AC was released.

It is possible that he heard the song and was inspired, but we don't know what Prince listens to.

Judging by his live cover choices, I doubt it is mid 80s synth funk that was derivative of his own sound.

In the end, who knows, and who cares?

It's an interesting topic for insane Prince fans to fight over I guess....

^ Yes in all fairness Prince may have even invented it and Andre used it but it seems to clear to me that it's the same beat, so it was interesting to notice it while listening to the song.

Not really close, and no he didn't have to rip anything off from anyone.

I think you're just comparing the fact that both beats have an isolated snare at the end of each 4 bars, with the open/closed hi-hat leading to the snare. There's also a quicker open/closed hi-hat that I hear... TONS of beats have done that throughout the years. I hear why you say that, but nah...
