Morris Day on new Time album & Prince

http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/music/articles/2011/08/23/20110823morris-day-interview-time-prince-purple-rain-new-album.html#ixzz1VtY8RWqJ

8/27: Q&A: Morris Day on new Time album, Prince

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Morris Day's first album with the Time, a self-titled effort of synthesizer-driven party-funk written by Prince and members of his Revolution. It sent two singles to the upper reaches of the Billboard R&B charts - "Get It Up," which featured an explosive Prince solo, and "Cool."

Morris Day and the Time

When: 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.

Where: Celebrity Theatre, 440 N. 32nd St., Phoenix.

Admission: $33-$42.

Details: 602-267-1600, celebritytheatre.com.

But it was three years later that he really grabbed the mainstream by the collar with a star turn in the movie "Purple Rain," thanks to stellar performances of "Jungle Love" and "The Bird."

We spoke to Day about his work with Prince, the firing of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis (who went on to bigger things, producing Janet Jackson), "Purple Rain," the live show that brings him to Phoenix and the first new Time release since 1990.

Question: I read that you and the other original members of the Time were working on an album.

Answer: Yeah, that's scheduled to be released in October. It's going to be off the chain. It's really cool because everybody's creative. Obviously, we have some of the best songwriters and producers. So it's awesome to see what happens when we all get together in a room.

Q: How does the sound of this album compare to what people might go in expecting?

A: You'll hear elements, familiar riffs, familiar sounds. But I also think it goes to the next level without sounding like we're trying to get with somebody else's program, if you know what I mean.

Q: Will the other original members be in Phoenix?

A: In my touring band, I've got three original members, Jellybean (Johnson), Monte (Moir) and myself. And then there's other guys - (Ricky) Freeze (Smith), (Torrell) Tori (Ruffin), JMac, Sly. Some of them I've been working with for 15 years now. It's still going to be a party. It's a great band. Ain't nobody going to miss a thing (laughing).

Q: Do you have a favorite song to do live?

A: "Jungle Love" and "The Bird" are always fun because even if it's a tough crowd, we know we going to get 'em at that point. But certain nights, because of the sound of the venue or the stage, certain songs stand out more than others. So it's always a different favorite song for me.

Q: This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Time's first album. Was that a good experience working with Prince on that one?

A: It was a great experience. We were all young and had no idea where the whole thing was going. So all those efforts back then were just innocent creative moments where we were just doing what we do and had no idea that it was going to take off the way it did.

Q: Speaking of things taking off the way they did, "Purple Rain" is such a huge, iconic film. Did you expect that to become as big a deal as it became?

A: Absolutely not. We did the movie and had no idea what was about to happen.

Q: Did you know that you could act?

A: No. I had no idea. I hadn't done anything besides maybe a school play. I'd done nothing to give me any indication that I had any skills in that department.

Q: You seemed like pretty much of a natural on-screen.

A: You know, I think that's because it was natural. Ever since then, it's a little bit more of an uptight experience for me to get in front of a camera. Back then, I was just sort of being myself, so it was no big deal. Now, I don't really pursue acting that much. If somebody calls, I'll do it. But I feel like I have that to live up to.

Q: A lot of what happened in that movie and "Graffiti Bridge" was based on this rivalry between you and Prince. Was there any real-life rivalry?

A: Absolutely real-life rivalry. But it wasn't a rivalry like in the movie. It was just that we all worked together and because we toured together and did these different things together, the rivalry would surface. But we'd all try to cover it up, like, "Nah, I wasn't trying to kick your ass onstage last night. It just happened" (laughing).

Q: Are you and Prince in touch at all?

A: Not like back in the day. If there's some music to be done or concerts or something like that, we'll be in touch. But not just to shoot the breeze.

Q: The Time broke up not long after "Purple Rain." What happened there?

A: All my favorite bands, I never felt the same about them anymore once they started switching members. So I felt that way about my band. Once Jimmy and Terry got fired, it just didn't feel the same for me. So that was sort of the beginning of the end.

Q: So was their firing Prince's doing?

A: That was Prince's doing.

Q: Did you and Prince argue about it?

A: Well, there wasn't much to say, because basically, we were part of his production company. He was calling the shots. So it was just something that I kind of had to live with, regardless of how I felt.

Q: When you did "Pandemonium" in 1990, there seemed to be more involvement by the other members of the Time.

A: Well, we had all kind of gone off and had some success at radio, pretty much all of us, so when we got back together, we kind of shared the writing and production duties because we had all proven ourselves at that point.

Q: What's the best part of doing shows for you?

A: The worst part is the travel. The best part is being onstage. If I'm having a bad day or I'm not feeling great, once we hit that first note, the energy we get from the crowd, it takes you to another level of existence and you have a good time every night.

From the

[ThePurpleUnderground]

So this clears up the heated debate over a new The Time album coming. I wonder will they be able to use the name?

Thanks for the heads up on this!

I'm reposting it here in case there's someone like me, who couldn't really read your single line-spaced, bolded post.

I hope so. I wish these interviewers wouldn't ask the SAME fuckin' questions over and over again! He asked some questions that have been answered by him MANY times before!!

I wanted to find out more about the album, their label, etc... Also, Morris never mentioned the original group coming together to do some performances or do a mini-tour for the new album. Maybe he just didn't mention it, but I certainly hope there are some plans to do so. But with these guys, you never know. Hell, I'm still skeptical we'll hear new music from them in October!! lol

Hmmmm.

October, great. But I'm going to believe it when I see. Seems odd that there was no mention of the name wrangles.

Wow, I didn't know they were coming to Phx since I never listen to the radio, thanks for the heads-up!

But they're playing with two other bands; Block & GQ? Never heard of them, what kind of music do they play and are they worth me getting to the venue to watch?

Wow, lots of tickets left and they've had to do a sale, just got 9th row for $20 each. smile

They play all "The Time" hits plus Morris solo hits. The show is very tight & well done. The last time I saw that version of the group(Which I find kinda strange but smart) Jerome was still with them. U won't be disappointed. Be prepared 2 b asked to come on stage if U in the front.. giggle

Never heard of Block, but GQ was out in the late 70's/early 80's. I just know their radio songs.

I am looking forward to more interviews with them as the album gets closer to release. This is when I wish there were magazines like UPTOWN that would be doing a major work on this release. I just don't know if they are going to get the sort of press they deserve.

Thank you KCOOL for posting this.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Ur welcum. I really enjoyed Jesse's revealing interview recently. I think they will do more. They know the deal on how to get the right press. Once everything gets set in motion.

I can vouch for the fact that Morris Day and the Time still do a good show. I just saw them last year and they sang many of the old Time hits plus Morris hits, as KCool states. The band was tight, Morris glib and funny, and the audience danced their behinds off. My son was even impressed and wanted to listen to their CDs after the show. If you have the chance to see them, it is well worth the experience. And, yes, you will be asked to come on stage--especially if you are female. lol

I haven't seen them since they replaces 'Rome! Is it heavily noticeable that he's no longer with them? I would think it would be, which is why I didn't make any effort to see them when they were nearby earlier this year. He's a BIG part of their stage presence!

That's true that not having Jerome leaves a hole, but they have a new guy doing the comedy sidekick and though it isn't the same, you soon forget that when Morris and the guys start hitting the old songs and you get up to sang and dance your ass off! wink

I know I'll be missing Jerome, it just won't seem really right without him. They might have somebody playing off Morris, but they don't have Jerome's smile or personality.

It will be fun seeing them anyway, especially for a good price for great seats in my FAVORITE venue! It's a theater in the round & seats about 4,000, bars upstairs and downstairs & not a bad seat in the house. It's really fun when George Clinton plays there, it's just like a big party!

Are you and Prince in touch at all?

A: Not like back in the day. If there's some music to be done or concerts or something like that, we'll be in touch. But not just to shoot the breeze.

From that answer I would conclude that Morris has recorded some recent music with Prince. Hopefully Prince will have a song or two on the album.

"money talks and bs walks..." i ain't sayin a ting until the album drops. however if and when it does...i hope the touring version of the band don't get to play the new tracks...as they will kill the new album dead.

jerome has already jumped that particular ship (how many times can a brother sleepwalk his way through those tired jungle love dance moves?) so it has to be the original magnificent seven who sing, play, dance, perform and tour to promote any new material.

Pandemomium is the weakest Time album - hands down. And it is the one which they tried to have everyone contribute to because Jesse, Jimmy and Terry and Morris had all made their mark outside the group.

For me, the Time formula is the original lineup - which includes Prince writing and producing and performing. It is the formula which might return the Time to the astronomical heights of "Cool", What Time Is It?, and Ice Cream Castle.

Go back and listen to Its About Time - it is amazing because it is a dreadful live album of one of the best live acts on the planet. And those studio cuts are just plain embarrassing. Prince would have at least had better material for that part.

I will get whatever comes in October as I have been devoted since I met the group and saw them open on the Controversy Tour in 1982. I just hope they do it right this time. They are getting long in the tooth now. Everyone cant defy time like Prince has.

Pandemonium had a big impact on r&b and pop radio at the time it was out. In fact, I'm hard pressed to think of ANY Prince album since SOTT that got that had that many songs get that much airplay. The album ended up being a victim of the Graffitti Bridge flop and The Time's internal squabbles. There is probably too many songs on the record, but in the cd era you can say that about most projects.

"It's About Time" is kick-azz. The live tracks are very good, maybe not the best mix, or the best sequencing, but they are well performed and not nearly as bad as Prince's "21 Nights" cd. I have no idea why you called them dreadful. It's The studio tracks try to be too new school for me, so I don't like them that much. But Charlie Wilson has made a new career for himself using that approach so I don't see how Morris could get a deal for a record without someone insisting that he try it too. I ain't mad at him.

And for that nasty crack you made at the end of your post. How come Prince CAN"T GET A RECORD DEAL??????????????????? He's gone hat in hand to EVERY label even WB and come up with NADA. Prince has his troubles too.

The mix and sequencing are essential to a good live album - otherwise all you have is a bunch of nice live tracks. As an album, it was a cheap altrnative to going into te studio and producing a cohensive set of tracks. They just clipped tracks from concerts and pasted them together. They didnt even use any logical order. The shows have been ended with The Bird and Jungle Love for years and that CD has them as the opening tracks. And what is with the masking of the profanity? Great live albums recreate the experience of the concert. This CD doesnt do that at all.

Get a grip - that was no nasty crack. Prince has defied time. A record deal doesn't mean anything to Prince. He is still making new music and releasing good albums. He doesnt look anything near his age. And he still tours the world without being relegated to a 80s nostalgia act. That is defying timein the music business.

Prince is an 80's nostalgia act. To the majority of people Diamonds and pearls was his last album. Only FAMS argue otherwise. Prince does want a record deal he just can't get the money he wants out the situation. The last I heard hewas giving tracks away on Facebook lol. Morris Day and The Time is really just Morris Day's solo career by a different name. There is no way MD wanted the curse words edited from those tracks so my guess is that Prince insisted on it.

Sad, but true.

Q: How does the sound of this album compare to what people might go in expecting?

A: You'll hear elements, familiar riffs, familiar sounds. But I also think it goes to the next level without sounding like we're trying to get with somebody else's program, if you know what I mean.

^^^

I wish Prince could do that.

diamond and pearls was prince's last decent studio album. nothing he has released in the past 20 years comes close to dirty mind, controversy, 1999, purple rain, around the world in a day, parade, sign o' the times, lovesexy (basically the majority of recordings made between 1978 & 1991).

prince has hardly tested his audience since 1991 - no bitches brew or brilliant corners amongst the planet earths, emancipations and musicology. why be miles davis when you can be liberace or tom jones?

as for the touring cabaret act 'morris day and the time' my earlier reply on this thread pretty much sums up my thoughts...but i will add this - given the choice between watching morris et al sleepwalk their way through jungle love, the bird etc or a night in a covert military facility being subjected to white noise...i'll take the latter.
