I figured out why I don't like Andy Allo's singing style I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but I wasn't feeling her voice. And this is completely a personal opinion, and does not discredit her talent and amazing beauty...and no disrespect to all of you who do love her voice. She is too "safe" for me. It's like, how much of that sexy, breathy tone can one take? I feel that same way about Goapele. Both of these singers have there place and time, and I even own a Goapele cd that I enjoy listening too every once in a while (but only a few songs) because it's too SWEET...too safe. There is little emotion, other than the smooth relaxed one, which gets boring. I find myself getting bored listening to Andy, Bria, etc... My favorite singers are Lauryn Hill, Mavis Staples, Adele, Gladys Knight, Sinead O'Conner..The Three Degrees!..etc... In the Prince camp, Shelby J rocks harder as a vocalist because not only can she do sweet, sexy, sultry but funky, gritty, grimy, angry!! She is more interesting to me as a vocalist. Thats all, thanks for reading

Nah, you're wrong! | |

And then theres that....lol...was I being to kind?

Uh huh.
So during the concerts, get up during Andy's parts and go get more drinks or food or whatever, and make sure you're planted for Shelby's parts. Everybody is happy.
Honestly though, I like mellow, laid-back female voices. I like powerhouses too, but I don't always want that. Sometimes I like a little cooing and just calming standing up there singing as opposed to a lot of vocal and physical theatrics. Yeah, Im totally down to do that, and I guess this did come off as a complaint..but I was really just having like an "A-Ha" moment about her singing style...because she's not unlistenable. And yeah, too much powerhouse is also annoying...But singers who can balance the two because they are genuinely in touch with the musical moment, and not afraid to go there, whatever the emotion may be at the time...those are my favorite singers...Prince is one of my favorite singers..(I love you Prince!!)

^How and why am I a troll? Enlighten me!
This girl is like a coat stand with a guitar hanging from her neck.
She can't sing, she can't play. The only thing I consider her good for is... well, you should know.

But I'm sure she's a really good person.

I must agree... Interesting I read here ppl who like her, would like to believe the only reason some other fans here don't like is becaue they are jealous. Well how about some of us here are sensitive about who plays in Prince's band, knowing the fact he only surround himself with professional musicians? He even said in one his interviews that he feels it a shame MJ was such a genious, too bad he didn't have a good enough band to back him up. And I agreed with Prince on this one, because contrary to MJ his band is AWESOME and each of them alone would nail an entire show. Well used to, but this Andy chick? I just don't understand.
I still cannot believe what happened at the cologne concert during Purple rain. My boyfriend didn't know anything as he is not an orger, and I didn't tell him about this before not to make him upset as I knew he is s bigger fan than I am... He figured out immediately and told me he can't believe Prince hired such an amateur guitar player. We were standing very close to the stage, she came out with her guitar, noone was on stage (Ida behind her at the back of the stage, but she didn't play), it was her moment to shine, all lights on her, music started, everybody got excited, started oooo-ing, we all knew what the next song will be, and then for the next 3 minutes NOTHING happened!!! She stood there, looking at her guitar to check which strings or cords (excuse me I don't know which is the correct term for it in English) she needs to press her fingers on to, to actually produce any sound, hit it and ooouch, is was off key.. she then tried hitting the same note over and over again, with a poor success eventually she stopped and we could hear Prince backing her from the behind the stage, because ppl were started to get a little bored. Prince then came out eventually and started singing the song. And if you think I am overreacting. I'm not, I have it on video, anyone interested, orgnote me and I'll send it. Being someone who is very much into music and have been all my life, I find this rather disturbing. And please do not point fingers at me, I distinguish between personal life and musical career and have absolute no personal feelings for this girl.

DId you see her do "the Camaroon"? What is this dance?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That why I like her. She's got a voice that would could sell records.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I did yeah. I kinda liked that though... You didn't?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I haven't seen it, so I was just asking....any footage of that?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Oh cool, I thought you were there... No unfortunately we didn't capture that. She didn't understand what Prince was trying to tell her to do. So her asking him over and over again was pretty frustrating but the dance itself turned out pretty well in the end. That was the time she came very close to us, and I could notice how pretty she is. but with

Oh, LOL..I live in Oakland. I haven't made it to any of the European shows. I am basing my opinion of Andy Allo's voice off of her youtube videos. Her voice, while not unlistenable, is so boring. And the footage of the show you were at, I was laughing out loud because it was ridiculous! I would be a bit peeved if I had paid good money to see Prince and was forced to watch an amateur guitar lesson instead. However, I still love Princey-Poo, Forever!!! And him bringing vocally boring beautiful women into his entourage is nothing new (ahem...Appollonia, Vanity, Mayte, Bria....etc). I wonder how the rest of the band, who is talented and not boring, feels about the Andy addition?
*oh, and Andy just posted a Youtube video of "The Cameroon" and it's, ...meh..cute but not like some amazing high energy African Dancing... (again, in my opinion!) [Edited 8/4/11 17:21pm]

IMHO, no one here would have purposely sought out to buy Andy's album or listen to her if not for the recent whirlwind work with P. With 1001 X two artists releasing CDs every year, she would have been passed over as are many. Of the many female singers he's worked with or has had non romantic interest in this past decade, she's average, I'd choose Goapele, Ledisi and Janelle before her. What she does have going for her is that hustle spirit to get herself heard, she hasn't paid heavy dues but she has worked for her spot in the rotation. Jeux Sans Frontiers

Mostly True. 99% of Prince's proteges I know because of him and in turn have been introduced to some of my favourite albums....Nothing wrong with that in my opinion...there are too many artists to discover...some that will never hit mainstream but have solid material so a little help from various sources is fine by me.
Andy is an exception to me because a friend of mine was actually into her and introduced me to her about 2 years ago and so I did listen to her album long before Prince got a hold of her. Her voice is average but I like her album. It's like Sunday chill out music to me.

yeah. i even feel that shelby or ida or liv doesn't get as much "attention" as andy gets. Im just basing this off of videos on youtube though so maybe they get attention on stage and i just don't see it.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I didn't see any attention paid to her exclusively at the concert. Maybe at some other shows...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The only reason you don't really hear ppl complaining about this, is because they had a little bit more to worry about at the cologne concert. I, myself forgot about this aswell until I got home and rewatched the videos taken... or rather
I love Prince too, no doubts about that, but I still don't get this girl. Anyways, can you please orgonote me the youtube link with the dance? I am curious, I was looking for it yesterday, but couldn't find it. Let me see if I still like her dance... Thanks.

There is nothing special about this girl. She looks good, that's it. Looks are a dime a dozen. Her singing is just okay, it's nothing spectacular, guitar playing is horrible, even her drawings suck. She's missing a lot. She's an artsy fartsy, coffee house type that got glammed up for P's band. Her singing lacks feeling, that extra something. It's not there, and evident when she tries to sing a song from legendary Marvin Gaye. I'm glad she wasn't in the band when I caught all the LA shows. Good I wasn't subjected to her bad playing, average singing. Another thing, stop generalizing about P's female fans not liking it because she's a woman. I, and others complimented the duet from P and Esperanza. It was amazing. P has handed out fines for many years for missing notes, this Allo girl does it on the regular. He was known for having a tight band, this one is throwing it off with her off notes, bad keys.

I'm gonna have to co- for this...
The jealousy remarks are so funny to me......not everyone on here is a crazy fanatic who really believes she will be the next Mrs. Nelson...even if we think he's cute. Some of us actually live in the real world believe it or not and have real people that give us attention so we don't need to fanatically obsess over celebrities....oh yes it's true
Even though I have not seen Andy and Prince live together yet from what I've seen in videos...I wouldn't want to....I enjoy her CD but she just doesn't have the funk in her.

They probably stay in the same hotel... And they most probably spend some quality time together, when she draws little hearts on his finger... she is kept to ease on his isolation. Noone has any idea how hard it must be for a musician like Prince. He needs a hug every now and then...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I saw those pictures with the little hearts on their finger.....I think he likes to play with us all with all these women that revolve in and out of his camp.....to increase speculation on whether or not they are gonna married and yada yada yada...
I feel if he wanted to have a real relationship he could...it's not impossible....maybe he just enjoys being a playboy..I don't know...but I'm sure there are plenty of girls around him to give him hugs and..other things

She's got over 10k fans and will probably hit 11k by the middle of the month. Prince's fairy dust is working. I like the orger's words for Prince, "great illusionist"! His fans believe she is a great musician and singer (I do like her soprano tones). The Leaf Shall Inherit The Earth.
