That is why I said before Jill would probably reached her potential had she been a protegee of Rick James and Teena Marie. Jill did sing on many Teena Marie earlier albums and also I think she sang on Teena Marie's former protegee band Ozone first album as well (heck her picture was on one of their singles). I noticed they treated their protegees better than Prince treat majority of his. The reason why she wasnt their protegee even though she at least knew Teena Marie before she knew Prince is uncertain. But my speculation is that Jill had seen the star potential of Prince and plus with his 1999 crossover and her involvement of the album with the singing, she want to be star of her own with Prince help. Rick and Teena were popular among the R&B crowd and since Jill is part African American maybe she didnt want to limited herself as an R&B artist as Prince didnt want to be only know as a funk artist but again who knows.

Jill had the looks and the voice and she played instruments and songwriting. She had a perfect image. She can act too. Had Prince release her album in 1984 that woman would have been big I dont see why not. Sheila E, The Time, and even Appollonia who wasnt talent as Jill in voice wise and muscican all blew up. Shoot I think her album should came out in 1983 just to escape the mass release of 1984. Prince did had the material that wasnt the problem. But again she wasn't his top priority. I think she should had bounce by seeking other music talent instead of waited around when she realized Prince was ignoring her around 1985 as he continued to push back her album and had she left that time she would still had potential to become a star since her image was already known to the public thanks to 1999 and Purple Rain. I am sure Teena Marie and even some other hot producers at the time like Nile Rodgers or even Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis would helped her career.

Her biggest crime was she trusted Prince the Pimp, Prince the Playa too much and was too patient in return Prince did her dirty four times.

[Edited 5/23/11 1:48am]

Jill wasn't thinking with her head. That was her biggest mistake

Just curious... what were the 4 times? I know one was her part in Purple Rain, and the other was her diminished part in Grafitti Bridge. I am guessing the 3rd time was not releasing her music but holding her to contract. Am I correct? What was the 4th incident.

[Edited 5/23/11 11:10am]

When I meant "four times" its my way of saying Prince treated her worst when in return he received Jill's loyality and patience. I didnt really said it as of a way of give a specific number of all the mistreatment incidents Jill experienced by Prince since I wasnt there and Jill isnt fully speaking out on this. But if a fourth incident get a consideration then there are speculations of her faced physical abuse by him and how he broken her arm. She mentioned this indirect when she had her Myspace and put a picture of her 1999 era picture and said Marilyn Monroe want her arm back. And also she expressed indirectly of some sort of abused she faced by Prince when Chris Brown got attention for sang that Michael Jackson tribute at the Bet Awards last year.

You are right, she had the chance to leave five years prior to her signed that contract especially she likely witnessed firsthand how Prince did to the Family,Vanity herself, and even there were bad blood with him and the Time around Purple Rain all the former protegees in regard them had little control of their careers. She should had use their frustrations with Prince and how her album was constantly push back as a sign for her to bounce when had the chance, She should had move on as early as 1984 when she notice majority of Purple Rain movie musicians and even Sheila E were getting help from Prince while he left her hang dry even though she was the most talented among majority of them. But she was a typical young musician who want the megastar to help her out and willing to sacrifice and suffer just try to achieve her dream. I am sorry for Jill and her pain (I can tell she still deal with the hurtness to this day) and all but she cant totally blame everything on Prince for her career and how it resulted when she had chance and opportunity to leave while the iron was hot. Even when I read books about how Prince and Jill met it seem like he valued her talent but he had little interest in investing in her long-term. To him she was just one of his jumpoffs with the voice that he can easily take advantage of.

It's kind of hypocritical...criticizing prince and how he chooses to lead his life, yet she's the one at home on her pc gathering details of how he spends his time and posting about it on facebook. Who's the unhappy one here?

Awww, thanks Shorty. Appreciated.

I think some people are forgetting that we are presently on a Prince message board, the purpose of which is to discuss Prince, in a sub-forum dedicated to the discussion of artists that are associated with Prince.

An associated artist makes a controversial comment about Prince....... oh, let's not discuss it at all and talk about how great their album was for the billionth time instead.

Yeah. Asking her and her family to open for him for multiple shows and get their music out to a larger audience must suck!

My thoughts are based on her own interview were she admited to changing her own schedule to wait around in case he wants her to perform. Based on her own discription, it appears that she has to but her career on hold just in case he calls. It came off like he was highly unprofessional. .

Her career isn't exactly what Prince's is.....so I'd say performing with him will do more for her career than not. After all, its her time spent with him in the past that most people still talk about. Not her work she's done without him. She obviously finds performing with him more gratifying than performing alone. So she is lucky to get the chance to perform with a celeb on his level. And she knows that....which is why she is waiting by the phone. Ahhh, Prince keeping a woman waiting by the phone...he still has it. Sheila isn't exempt from the power of the Prince!

right. nod and I imagine with Jill being a mom... possibly single mom ?? (not sure of her marital status etc), but I got the impression that she fell on some hard times trying to provide for her children and the anger about Prince holding her from reaching her greatest potential by not releasing her music or letting her out of contract had to be amplified by her struggle to survive and provide for her family.

So Prince, her former boss, should be blamed for her not being able to feed her kids? Prince gets blamed for everything fucking thing around here!!! I guess I should blame my ex boss that I can't pay my light bill for this month? Or does that just work for Prince. If any of these ex protoges can't pay their bills its b/c their sorry asses thought Prince would make them famous b/c he was talented and gorgeous and it didn't work. Why? B/C they have NO TALENT!!! If they had, no one would be able to hold them back! Don't blame Prince for these sorry ass people who, if couldn't make it in the music business, could have done like us normal folks and carried their uneducated asses back to college and gotten a real job. But no, they are too good to do that, they want to still ride on Prince's coat tails after all these years. And kudos to the Prince fans for calling them out on their shit!

I shall now give my 2 cents. I won't bash Jill, I don't feel I need to at this moment. I like to think people have good intentions, so maybe she really is concerned for him. Honestly, she isn't saying anything I haven't thought myself.

Maybe she remembers "Prince wanting a wife and kids." Maybe she feels that he isn't really happy playing all these shows just b/c it makes him happy. Maybe he IS playing them to keep from thinking about how lonely he really is. He is having fun onstage, that's obvious. That doesn't mean he isn't using the playing for a substitute. He is going around holding women's hands, singing to them onstage, so he isn't in a serious relationship. No man does that when he is serious about a woman. So the question really is, does Prince really WANT to be settled down and loved and part of a family? He IS getting to an age where that is important...During dinnerat this past Christmas, I said to my family "I wonder what Prince is doing right now. I wonder if he's ok? Is he lonely? Does he miss not having kids? I hope he's ok." It kind of hit all of them that yeah, maybe he is lonely. I mean, that's a normal thought. Not really all that bad. Family is usually associated with unconditionaly love..and that's something everybody needs!

Now of course, Jill could have just been saying this for attention. Maybe she is just mad b/c Prince is getting all the attention and still selling out shows, and she is well...not doing much. Maybe that was just a I-woke-up-hating-the-world-today-so-I-will-lash-out-at-the-first-person-that-comes-to-mind. We all know that Prince tends to just linger on the mind. There is just something about him. She is NOT invincible. She spent years following up behind this man, its obviously she still likes him enough to even keep up with what he is doing. So maybe she is just saying this out of spite. Maybe she's mad about Misty..who knoww?

Either way, its her page, she can post what she wants. If people think she is being full of shit....they should call her out on it. If they think she is being sincere, they should say that. Either way, if she posts it on a public page, she had better be ready for the responses. And this is the internet, this is a place for socializing...which usually means discussing things. People can and should post whatever they want. I for one, am glad, Prince has such loyal fans, I'm one of them and will defend him if I think people are being spiteful towards him! I only associate on a regular basis with fans who truly care for Prince, that makes for exciting, memorable, and inspiring conversations! And FB has some great Prince fans, LOL, we catch everything!!

Prince is GORGEOUS. I'm inspired. GOD is GREAT. Is there anything else to say? lol

Calm down. cool I don't excuse Jill for making that deal. She signed it. I am pointing out that she may feel Prince holds some responsibility for her hardship if she was under a contract but not releasing any music and at the same time can't leave to go somewhere else. That is like you are under contract for a company., Company A. The company tells you they have plans for you but the time is not right yet.... but soon. In the meantime you aren't getting paid by the company because .... you are not working. To add to that... you can't go out and get another job because you are under contract with company A. So instead of accepting a job that has better compensation and a future, you have to accept sporadic, temp jobs with no contract... because you are under contract by company A. That could make a person angry. Especially if this situation lasted more than a few months. Didn't this go on for a few years?

[Edited 5/23/11 1:48am]

Jill is about 4 to 5 years younger than Teena. Teena moved into Jill's family home (Jill's mom, Winnie Martin, was Teena's manager. Winnie was married to Berry's brother, Fuller Gordy, at the time.) and a sibling relationship began when Teena was just 18 or 19 years old. I think that if Jill and Prince had not hooked up when Jill was so young (while she was singing backgrounds for Teena as the opening act for the Dirty Mind tour,) she might have been signed with Motown and even been groomed by Teena. But at the same time, Tee was working overtime to find and brand herself at Motown, and to find herself in the context of her relationship with Rick and his spiralling out of cocaine-trol as the years went on. (See: lyric's for Rick's song Happy.)

Prince and Jill met at a time when Prince was not feeling widespread love from the world outside of "the R&B crowd." But his music was transcending the artificial sand lines, and I think that just made him extra sexy, cool and compelling. And then, Prince seemed to go down that Prince the Pimp path as the years went on.

Jill herself has shared that she didn't want to burden her sister Teena with the business side over at Paisley Park, and kept that to herself. She wanted to keep their relationship a personal/familial one. Jill went on to say that there were times where she felt in her older sister's shadow. And that she chose to stay in the shadows by singing behind curtains for V6. She has some insight into the situation, just doesn't seem to able to let it all go. I think this is a common challenge for many of us - letting go of a situation that has ran its' course, but because of some integral affinity for the situation, such as love.

J.J, is at it again, with a recent post on her FB page about P.

Here are the quotes:

"He won't stop playing and it makes me so sad that he has nothing else, no one is in his life that mean enough for him to take off the dancing shoes and just come home. In life there must be balance"

she later adds...."Doing a three hour show to then do another several hours afterwards at a party-- then more hours at the house... Are u really for real? That's happy?"

In itself this line is not bitter, 1st she pays a compliment:He won't stop playing

then she comments on what even Prince.org fans talk about all the time "Is Prince seeing anyone, is he happy" etc etc That comment has nothing to do with being bitter...

... with all that said, bottom line and think about it, if she wanted to say 'Screw Obama' she could, it's her Facebook page. A lot of the Related Artist on Facebook and myspace and what have you are very 'vague' with comments they make toward Prince, Jill included. I do not remember ever reading someone out right BASHING Prince (past say prince.org ... LoL) Mind you, that doesn't stop me from lovin' her, the Twinz, Shelby J. or any other Related Artist for that matter.

Jill is Jill ... LoL

At this point, right now, I choose not to speculate.

I did when she first posted but, this thread was on page 2 or 3 when I sat back and thought, that we've given this thread more strength and perhaps that's what Jill was lookin' to do, just get us talkin' and that's not a bad thing per se, is it ???

Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I think Jill was perhaps Prince's most talented protege and certainly one of his most attractive.

I always wondered why her career was never more spectacular then it was.

These posts explain why. She may be a great singer and has a fantastic figure but she lack the passion and drive of Prince. Madonna, Katie Perry and many others can't hold a candle to Jill in talent but they more then make up for it in drive and love for being infront of an audience. She lacked the one thing Vanity had (besides looks) that "it" factor that makes some performers light up like xmas trees when the spotlight is on them. Amazingly she still does not understand those people.

I agree.I also think that Jill was never really a priority for Prince. She had been in the Prince camp since 1982 but her album wasn't released until 1987.Look at all the other proteges that Prince concentrated on before that (Vanity 6,the Time,Apollonia,The Family,Mazarati,Sheila E.).And then, when Jill's album was finally released,it contained several tracks that were old and outdated ("G-Spot" is a great song, but I think that concept would have been much more provocative and shocking in 1984).

she's just a bitter old bitch ! i wish she would shut the FUCK up! she's just jealous she has nothing going on for her ..that bitch wish she was onstage performaning @ the forum ..prince plays music because that's what brings him joy it's not work to him it's all big party ..and you see that at his shows when he's smiling an laughing in his joking mood ...doing long hr concerts w/ an following aftershow is nothing new prince been doing this for years so shut the hell up you ugly old wrinkled bitch!!!!!!!!!

Jeez. Was there any need for the bile that just spewed forth from your brain? Check yourself. MY eyes feel like they need to be disinfected after that chit. Grow up.

And back on topic, whilst I'm not saying I agree with her one way or another, she does raise a pretty valid point - not that we'll ever know the answer, but it's interesting nonetheless.

Really? You asked your family what Prince was doing on Christmas? You really must be his number one fan! lol

I could be totally wrong about this, but I think that Jill Jones feels alot of bitterness towards Prince. Some of it may be justified.Even though she can actually sing, her career was never a priority for Prince. He kept her on the back burner from 1982-1987,allowing her to only be a backup vocalist while Prince focused on other proteges. He placed her in two of his movies but she didn't even get to perform in either one (the "Love Machine" sequence in GB featured Jill lip-syncing to vocals by Elisa Fiorilla).

When her album was finally released in 1987,it received no promotion.A second album was cancelled but Jill wasn't able to get out of her Paisley Park Records contract. To make ends meet, she had to take a job as a backup vocalist for the disco band Chic.I think she feels that Prince held her back and kept her from reaching her full potential as an artist.

I have been saying this for years now Jill is very bitter and blames Prince for why her music career was on standstill.

I also said in the past maybe she should had gone under Teena Marie and Rick James. I dont get it why she didn't. Shoot her own mother was Teena Marie manager? Why couldnt her mother use that advantage to help Jill gotten a career outside of Prince . Teena Marie also produce for other artists and Rick James had success with Mary Jane Girls. And Teena Marie and Jill Jones were close and remain that way until her ultimely death last December.

Strange she solely relied on Prince to get her solo career going and look what happened. She should had gotten a clue when Prince didnt do much with the Family and his other proteges outside the Time. Even Sheila was smart enough to not solely relied on Prince producing music for others and she is very successful. Jill Jones should blame herself for signed a lousy contract. She mixed business with pleasure with Prince and that cause her had bad results.

Exactly.I wonder how things might have turned out for her if she had went a different route. She stayed in the Prince camp all those years and has nothing to show for it....no hit singles,no platinum albums. On another thread, someone made a very good point regarding Prince's proteges. This was just a way for him to release more material.I'm not really sure if he ever intended for these people to become huge superstars with longevity.
