Stevie Nicks Refused Prince Relationship

Fleetwood Mac star Stevie Nicks refused to embark on a romance with Prince - because she feared they would never speak again if they broke up.

The singer collaborated with the Purple Rain hitmaker on her track Stand Back and admits Prince wanted their friendship to turn into something more serious.

But Nicks decided to keep their relationship platonic to ensure they would always be able to work together on more music.

She tells Harper's Bazaar magazine, "Prince and I were just friends. I think he would have been happy to have had a relationship. But I really wanted a musical relationship, and I had smartened up, even then. You'll break up and never speak again. But he wasn't interested in just that."

Prince was a lil casanova in his day. Wasn't he?

30 years ago she was too old for him. Um...I'm younger than Prince and she wasn't too old for me.

Face facts, not everyone is hot for Prince.

This story is some bullshit. It has been said, countless times by both of them, that Stevie was so fucking blitzed on coke when P arrived to the studio that he walked in, did his shit, and left. Stevie herself has stated they had NO INTERACTION outside of that.

There's even a televised interivew where she brings up that he came in, performed his keyboard bit, "and then walked out of my life" (paraphrasing).

Actually, that's not true. I think after that she added, "And I did not see him for a very long time." She's talked about being high and passing out at his house (she wrote a song about that called "A Thousand Days") and then talked about how he came to visit her while she was sick (she asked him to give her some more medicine and he remarked something like, "I didn't come here to get you hooked to another substance!"). She was also at the Purple Rain premiere.

I think you need to do a bit of Googling and see some pics of taken of Nicks around the 70s and 80s. Older or not, she didn't look it, and was gorgeous. Still is, actually.

I can't blame him at all. lol

If Stevie weren't a druggy at the time, they probably would have made a nice couple, for a couple of years. wink

Exactly. Saying you think someone would have been happy had a relationship developed into something more is not the same as that person actively wanting (ie, angling for) a more intimate relationship.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Okay so I cant seem to find my Stevie Nicks greatest hits CD (I think my sister in law swiped it).

IIRC, she tells the story of "Stand Back" and says she had just gotten married. She and her husband were driving the Pacific Highway and heard something from "1999" on the radio. Pulled off the road and stopped at a wrecka stow to buy it. Went to the studio, called Prince, etc.

Now I know she was coked out of her mind but I think she would remember one of the main reasons of no hookup being that she was married?

It was Little Red Corvette.

She was only married for three months. It wasn't a "real" marriage, as she has said many times. Her best friend had tied and it devastated her (the best friend's death is what she wrote the song "Gypsy" about). Her friend left behind a newborn baby and a husband (the baby was born prematurely, just before his mother's death). Stevie said she felt an obligation to raise the child and therefore married the guy (she has also said that both he and Stevie went a little crazy after her friend's death). Anyway, it wasn't a marriage based on love, and it ended very quickly.

As I mentioned in a prior post, Stevie and Prince had other interactions later on, and that's probably the period she's referring to (and as NouveauDance mentioned, it's just a small quote that a journalist blew up to make a big deal out of).

(just adding somehing I wrote about it a long time ago)

Because something came up on the subject of Stevie Nicks, I just had to lol

"Stand Back
Inspired by Prince

I got married the day I wrote this song. We were driving to Santa Barbara and a new song by Prince came on, so we pulled over somewhere to get the tape. It just gave me an incredible idea, so I spent many hours that night writing a song about some kind of crazy argument, and it was to become one of my most important of my songs. I’ve been doing this song for years, Fleetwood Mac does it also, and I never get tired of it. “Stand Back” has always been my favorite song onstage, because…when it starts, it has an energy that comes from somewhere unknown…and it seems to have timespace. I’ve never quite understood this sound…but I have NEVER questioned it.
I became a different person, and like that, because usually I make my OWN characters…but the lady in Stand Back was not my idea. By the way, Prince did come into the studio the night I called him and told him about the song, and he played incredible synsthesizer on it…and then he just walked out of my life, and I didn’t see him for a long time.
It was extraordinary…."

From DMSR:
“Stevie was inspired to write "Stand Back" after hearing "Little Red Corvette" on the radio. She called Prince to tell him and she wanted to give him some credit. “

KenHold from amp states
“The story as she told it goes more or less like this... she was driving with her new husband up to Santa Barbara for their honeymoon and they heard Little Red Corvette on the radio for the first time. They found a record store and bought the single and Stevie started making up and singing lyrics along to LRC which then became Stand Back. She says try singing Stand Back to LRC and you'll see how it fits in (I didn't have any luck when I tried this wink)... so anyway, when she finally did get around to recording Stand Back, about halfway through recording she got Prince's number (with some difficulty) called him up and told him she was at Sunset Sound recording a song inspired by LRC and if he would like to come down and hear it. Prince showed up about 20 minutes later at the studio, sat down at the synthesizer and did a couple of synthesizer parts in one take each and then as Stevie put it "walked out of her life". “

IM guessing the song she heard by Prince was Little Red Corvette...its been said Stand Back has the same sort of chord or melody structure...synth opening etc...then verse with loud LRC-like chorus...hence the verse and the Stand Back chorus

Another interesting thing I‘ve always felt was that the synths and the “dubba dubba” sound of some of them sound like his I Would Die 4 U which he would later record.

Some say this song she wrote later is about Prince is called Thousand Days (from her box set)

"Here is what Stevie said about Prince: Billboard April 18, 1998 "'Thousand Days' was written about my non-relationship with Prince," says Nicks, who had earlier composed "Stand Back" with him - although she notes he's never called her back "to set up his payment on 50%" of the latter. "Days" recounts an abortive, all-night '80s recording session with him at his Minneapolis home during a Fleetwood Mac tour, climaxing with Nicks "smoking my pot - he didn't agree with my lifestyle - and going to sleep on Prince's floor in his kitchen. I like him, but we were just so different there was no possible meeting ground."

"Here is the lyrics of Thousand Days (at least according to Stevie, Prince is one of her great loves):

The closest you've ever come to me
Was to help me up the stairs
You stood in the middle of the stairway
You nearly dragged me up the stairs
"You've been asleep."
"Well, I've been asleep for how long?" she says
"Why do you question me?"
He says, "You never cared about time before, my friend."

Seems like a thousand days since you've been gone...
Seems like a thousand days since you've been gone...

You're not my friend, you're not my love
And this is something that we really don't discuss
If there is no time, and there is no place.
And, if there was, well, you'd never leave a trace
And as all arch angels do to you
And as all arch enemies will finally do to you, too
Well, I found you

Quiet now, songbird, just for one night
Well, I know that you love to sing
And, oh baby, well, I know that you love to write
You live by the light of the moon
and I live by light of desire
Ooh, such words to her over the phone
"Just how many people are there with you now"

Well, I can see the trouble
The sun is here today and I requested a storm
But I like some kind of TIME/LIFE edition,
Tradition, competition...
Being the only thing that I really have to remember
The great singers and the great players

And if the sun warms up the rain,
And the rain puts out the sun
Why does the greatest love become the greatest pain?

So, where are you?
Sometimes I hear you crying
and I wake up, and still I wake up crying

Well, he is on my mind..he's everywhere
And if he followed me home,
will the sound of both of our voices simply disappear?
Well, I miss you now...

He laughs
He has an attitude so I have an attitude, too
He knocks on the door next to the courtyard
Well, he frightens me so, I let him in
But I'm already, well, I'm already screaming
How can the greatest love come from the greatest pain?"

I know its "folly" but just something I thought interesting
