Bootsy is definitely funkier, I would have preferred that direction.

bootsy's the man, but hes too much of a frontman to just be in princes band. i dont think it would have worked, except for maybe just a special guest appearance sort of thing.

You can clearly hear from Prince's Bass Playing that Larry was more of an influence.

I prefer Bootsy by a mile, but Prince prefers Larry so there it is.

I don't think either one is a good fit personality wise though.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I love me some Bootsy, but Larry changed the game before Bootsy came along. Larry is an original Thumpasaurus and according to Bootsy, Larry is the baddest motherplucker in the universe.

I don't think that there was a place, musically, in Prince's band for Bootsy. He is more of a "lead bass" player. Listen to his stuff and you see that he plays the bass like a lead guitar. Listen to Prince's stuff, and it matters not if you like the song or not, the arrangements are always tight. Nothing steps on anything else. Bootsy would have been bored halfway theough the first practice. Prince would have fired him the first time he stepped on that octave pedal.

Didn't Bootsy start out on the lead guitar?

Yep, and that is how he attacks the bass. Same mentality. Prince has not had a lead guitar player in his band since Dez 25 years ago. Having said that, I would love to see the Star bass on stage with the Symbol guitar...that would be a feast for the eyes alone. But I think the Star bass would burn in frustration at having to play some of those "other" songs.

Funny but your observation about Dez is startlingly true. Dez was the only real lead guitar player who occujpied a relevant role on guitar in the studio and onstage. No Prince guitarist can claim a moment like the solo on Little Red Corvette. Get some of the DIrty Mind and 1999 tour shows if you are too young to have been there like I was - Dez rocked out some major solos.

No nuts, I am not too young. The second concert I ever went to was Prince opening for Rick James.
