Jesse Johnson On Video Soul

As I promised long long ago - below is Jesse on Video Soul. He was on for the full 2 hour show - but I omitted his performances , as some of them -most notably Black In America have been on you tube. Enjoy...I probably wont leave this on YT but a few weeks - but the entire thing with performances will be embedded at http://thafoundation.com....

I know I got to be cooler than that cat you're sittin' with....

Great. Thanks for posting that. Hopefully some of the Prince apologists will at least watch the first segment and gain some perspective.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

They won't. The ones that do will try to get the video deleted. They work hard to try to re-write history for Prince around here.

Prince would throw them off the bill in cities like L.A. & NY because they would do the Bird? That's cold.

Prince is hands-down, one of my favorite artists but i'm not blind or deaf. When The Time reunited for Pandemonium Prince did an interview in Rolling Stone and admitted that The Time was the only band that scared him and he had every reason to be scared. So many people over-romanticize the Revolution and how great they were. They were good, very good and perhaps very creative but they couldn't fuck with The Time, as far as a live band performance, period. In Purple Rain, The Time's sets were live and most of and maybe all of the Revolutions' were pantomimed. If you listen to Pandemonium, the weakest tracks are the ones done by Prince. The Time had so much talent; they were Prince's Frankenstein, if you will. Everybody, aside from Jerome, could and would play, produce, write and arrange and went on to have success doing all those things. I love Prince but it is what it is. The Time was and is still a hell of a band. Prince would go on to have great live bands but the Revolution was no competition for the Time and i think Prince knew that. The Time, unfortunately, had Prince feeling pretty insecure.

wow...Prince is a control freak. I wonder if he changed a little bit. Do they talk to each other? I only know that now Prince is trying to block new album by The Time. I'm disappointed in Prince if he does stuff like that to other people.

Maybe that's why Rick James treated Prince the way he treated him. Rick James wasn't intimidated by Prince at all and did all kind of crazy things to him)))

I love P as a musician, but as a person I hope he learned how to treat people good by this age.

True or not, the bottom line is this: there is no Time without Prince. He made them. Point blank. At the end of the day, that is all there is to it. Some have done well on their own in music business - Jam and Lewis especially, Jesse, and Morris to some extent - but the Time is not the Time without Prince. There isnt anything great from the Time as a group that doesnt involve Prince.

I remember that episode too. I recall the kids asking Jesse about drugs and he told them how his parents had scared the hell out of him when he was little by telling him a story of a local guy on Angel Dust who thought he could fly so he jumped off a building - i.e. so he never did drugs. I remember the kids laughing at that Angel Dust/flying story.

By extension, there'd be no Prince without Andre Cymone letting him stay in his home giving him a foundation to develop his talent, Chris Moon helping him, Pepe Willie, etc. You can go on and on with it.

The Time were just as talented and at the time, accomplished in their own right. Prince provided them with material, but it's what they did with it that made the difference. If they wanted to, they could write great material without a lick of contribution from Prince. Flyte Tyme, Jesse, and the gang have written and performed on Time-related/affiliated material without Prince and have done fine.

Whether Jesse who was very bitter 4 years wants 2 admit it or not. Prince was disciplining them. If it wasn't 4 his heavy hand & not letting them run wild back then. They wouldn't have became as successful as they eventually became individually. As talented as Jesse is. He was equally ungrateful...Prince was the master and they were the students. Deal with it. To this day Prince still holds all the cards to "The Time"......He will own there Masters 2. Because there his...prince

Really? YOu think that is really the same thing?. Prince put the band together and created the music that made the Time. Pepe Willie, Chris Moon, and Andre Anderson didnt created Prince.

There is so much filler and just plain crap on VP that it is hard to place it above an entire decade of Prince. It definitely should have been one disc - the second one hardly has any fully realized songs on it and is weighed down with pretenious and overblown spoken word parts plus the most self serving fake interview I have ever heard. I love Jesse. I met him right after he released his first album. I have all the albums and some killer concerts. I went to see him with Teena Marie and Frankie Beverly back in the 80s. But I can only give him a C+ on VP. It cant stand up to 3121, PLanet Earth, or Lotusflow3r

Agree about one cd. But it is FAR stronger than the Prince records you mention. 3121 was ok at best, but Planet Earth was straight up boring, Lotus sounded TERRIBLE. The playing was good (Prince always PLAYS well) but songs were a WRECK. MPLS sounded like someone trying to imitate Prince, melodies were weak. The overall production is terrible.

Jesse's SONGS were tighter and more focused. Plus really good songwriting. I could totally live without the talking parts. I can say that about the Gold Experience and Exodus.

Just my opinion, as you have yours.

Didn't they mention Jesse wrote Jungle Love in the clip? I think that was probably one of their biggest mainstream songs. Many folks like Pandemonium as much as the other records. So that kind of negates what you are saying. He may have pulled them together as a group, but they picked up steam with their live shows which was all them. Clearly you simply have a problem with them as a group and want Prince to be the end all and be all of your music universe. But the facts are not really on your side.

That doesnt negate anything. That the Time was even in the position to be in Purple Rain and had 2 hit albums under their belts prior to Jungle Love is almost totally attributed to Prince. Apollonia and Morris Day owe a good part of their careers to being in a that movie - a movie that was made possible by the existence of Prince. I never devalued Pandemonium (which was also invovled with so lets insinuate he didn't. It can be proven). But anyone knows they don't get to Pandemomium if not for the 3 album before it.

I love the Time. I got to meet them all when no one knew who they were and they were opening the Controversy Tour with Zapp and Roger. I have seen them live over 40 times since that tour nearly 30 years ago and I have every record. I have no problem with them. I do, however, have a problem with a lack of acknowledgement - or knowledge - of the facts. Pychoanalyze someone who isn't smarter than you.

[Edited 3/2/11 9:48am]

Pychoanalyze? What is that?

Even if yo meant PSYCHOanalyze what in the word are you talking about?

Smart ALSO has nothing to do with it.

So if there was no Sly Stone there would have been no Prince. No James Brown, no Prince. No Little Richard, no Prince. Does that work for you? Probably not because it seems to insult Prince's talent even though it is isn't.

You seem to "have no problem with them" but you don't want to acknowledge that Prince brought out Good Question, Tony LeMans and some other acts that never took off. So giving the band credit for it's own ability to make a mark is just as important as giving Prince all the credit. You stated "There isnt anything great from the Time as a group that doesnt involve Prince."-which led me to the point about Pandemonium. He gave up a couple of weak songs the rest was all them. Blondie and Skillet were great tracks. Without Prince.

There's a difference between discipline and flat out disrespect. I don't think any of them are ungrateful. These cats were like his family/brothers. This is how you treat family? There's a way you can handle things. Dropping them from the bill minutes before they go on stage has nothing to do with discipline. That's EGO. I love Prince, but come on...
