Favorite Prince Protege We all know that Prince had many extensions of his musical prowess...ex.THE TIME! Who do you think was the funkyest, toetappingest, and overall BEST protege of them all?
As for Mr. Wrecka Stow (THATS ME!): I'D say either The TiME, vANITY 6, OR andre cymone!!!
Wat about u???
The folks from Brooklyn play da bass pretty good but the ones from Minneappolis play it like they OUGHTA SHOULD!

I don't really care for the use of the word "protege" for some of the people or groups that others tend to refer to as ....for instance, Is Andre (Anderson) Cymone really a protege? Prince moved into the Anderson home, they were in a band together, but he is an accomplished artist, same goes for The Time, they were all musicians before Prince came along, and they are all talented, most were in Flyte Tyme prior to Prince...same as Sueann Carwell who they refer to as a protege....All talented musicians pre- and post- Prince. Now Vanity, Appollonia, and the like, I would refer to as protege's because they weren't musicians before and really have done nothing since....they couldn't stand on their own merits..... Love is all we have, the only way that each can help the other.

Not musicians, but it's untrue that they haven't done anything since they left Prince's camp. They released solo-albums and Vanity released music videos as well. They also kept acting which they did before being a Prince-associate. Whether they were popular, successful, appealed to people, or stand on their own is subjective and a moot point imo. If you raise the bar to the level of Prince's success and compare every associate's career with his, then it's a waste of time lol. Fact is that they kept going in the entertainment business whether one cared or not.

As for my picks : Andre Cymone, Mazarati, Sheila E, The Time (+ solo-work & productions by Jam & Lewis/Jellybean/Jesse/Monte/Morris ), Vanity 6

Fav associated artist (not protege) is hands-down, Sheila E!!! A true musician, she's also one of the few who still plays with Prince. It was so great that I got to see her perform with Prince during one of the W2A concerts. They have such great chemistry together! Have u had your + sign today?

Andre wasn't a protege
Your question is hard 2 answer, because I think they all totally encompased the vision Prince had for the particular group. the Time totally kills it, Morris Day was the outgoing silly Prince
Vanity 6 each lady seriously had the look the attitude the moves that made it feel like this was an aspect of Prince's essence. Vanity totally owned the character. Of course Apollonia wasn't committed 2 that. She did good in the movie though.
the Family was another with just the bit we had I knew they would seriously represent. + everyone there was a part of Prince camp for a while so they had his purple rain...
Sheila E. of course another who (from an interview I read back then) she and the band studied Prince's previous albums and sounds to make sure they carried that sound. She was another frontman that owned it.
I wish we had more from Jill as a protege, cause the Jill Jones album period wasn't really 'connected' to what Prince was doing at that time, like it would have if her album was released during the Parade or Purple Rain era.
Madhouse did represent for the SOTT era with the videos and the Hard Knock Life Jazz Underside of the City feel.
Mazarati, I liked because live they jammed Prince songs like Head America and other which carried on Prince's extension.

U can leave it as Proteges,
associated artists can be too big, Chaka Khan would be considered an asso artist, yet we know she is/was a huge act before Prince

Even though I liked listening to I Wanna Be Your Lover ,Soft & Wet, Dirty Mind and a few other jams back then... it was the Time's 777-9311, Cool, the Walk that made me dig Prince.
I loved the Time and their sound, they are the reason I took a closer look into Prince. I didn't really like Little Red Corvett, and 1999 was eh, but that damned 777-9311 killed me. Then I heard Erotic City, WDC, and 17 Days a year later and I became the biggest fan of Prince. Been digging him ever since. [Edited 3/21/11 20:40pm]
