It's been said she's BI-lingual.
When and where and by whom? Seriously, I never read or heard anything to that effect and I think I've read 90% of the articles ever written or interciews she's done. Would be cool if she did. |

The question was if she speaks any Spanish, not whether she could be a professional interpreter. |

Have you ever heard the 'Fé' (unreleased) album? Efan is right. |

Technically that's true. But anyone could "speak" spanish if they were reading it.
I have always wanted to know if she actually "speaks" it, i.e. can she carry on a conversation in it, does she speak it with relatives etc. I picked up a little from my co-workers but that's different than learning it because you grew up with it or studied it. |

And on that note....the answer to the thread question is still NO.

Funny I often pondered this same question. I have come to the conclusion that she isn't fluent but knows a few words here and there. I am not African. Africa is in me, but I cannot return.
I am not taína. Taíno is in me, but there is no way back.
I am not european. Europe lives in me, but I have no home there.

Me too But....remember the type of Spanish our friends speak is not the type that is taught in school. In school you're taught proper Spanish (Castilian?) but on the streets it's dang near Spanglish. |

^Good question...
Well, because she is of Latin origin and I'm sure she's heard a lot of Spanish in her life. I know she reacted positively when complimented in Spanish.
And, anyway, I'm sure she speaks more Spanish than you (or even she) think.
And even if she couldn't speak ANY Spanish at all, she had to learn some to record the (unreleased) 'Fé' album. [Edited 11/4/10 13:00pm] |

As somebody who has lived among, worked with , and gone to school with people of latin origin I can assure you that not everybody speaks spanish. It's almost a tad racist to assume that because somebody has a spanish surname that they must speak spanish. You do know her mother is creole right?
What do you mean she speaks more spanish than she thinks? That doesn't make any sense.
As for the spanish on the album. Many musical artists have recorded spanish language songs without being able to speak and understand the language. It's called reading from a script and having a language coach to ensure correct pronuciation. Think of Antonio Banderas. When he first came to hollywood he knew absolutely NO english. In the movie Mambo Kings, he is speaking from the script. He was not fluent in English when he made that movie and has said in interviews that even though he was speaking english on camera...he didn't know what he was saying because we us not fully familiar with the language.

a tad racist whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?
You Americans see monsters where there's nothing!
Her vocals on her 'Fé' album feature too good pronunciation for someone who doesn't speak (or heard) ANY Spanish.
That's why I said that she may speak more 'Spanish than she thinks' (which has not to be taken verbatim). |
