Esperanza Spalding on surprise Best New Artist Grammy nomination, being friends with Prince

Esperanza-Spalding

It was late Wednesday night when Esperanza Spalding‘s cell phone began buzzing. “Everybody and their mother-law started texting me and saying, ‘Oh my God!’” says the jazz bassist-singer, 26. They were congratulating her for scoring a Best New Artist nomination in this year’s Grammy race. “I certainly did not expect to even be considered for that type of nomination, me being a little old jazz musician and everything.”

Spalding is both pleased and bemused by the attention. “I mean, for jazz musicians, usually the recognition comes from your peers,” she says. “If someone that you really respect artistically likes your record, that’s all the award you need. But it is meaningful, and I don’t want to act like it’s nothing, that someone outside of my little jazz circle knows about me and wanted to acknowledge me.”

Her fellow nominees this year are Drake, Justin Bieber, Florence + the Machine, and Mumford & Sons. Although Spalding is only well versed in one of those artists’ music (“I think Drake is really incredible”), she’s no snob. “A lot of musicians who consider themselves intellectual artists sometimes look down their noses at people who have a lot of commercial success,” she notes. “They don’t remember how much really hard work it is to be a commercially successful entertainer. So even if I’m not familiar with their music, I respect their hard work. Now I have to go check them out some more.”

The Grammys exposure should help Spalding with her next project, a more mainstream-oriented album called Radio Music Society. “I want to take a lot of the players that I know that are really phenomenal jazz musicians right now, put them in these songs, and format it in a way that will end up on the radio without compromising the soul and the core of improvised music,” she says. She is currently writing music for that album with an eye toward releasing it in late 2011.

Spalding is also preparing to support Prince, whom she calls “a dear friend,” on his“Welcome 2 America” tour starting later this month. “Anything I do with Prince is always a blast, whether it’s jamming in his basement or having a conversation about genetic biology,” she says. “I’m sure this will be no different. He’s a totally fun character and an incredible musician, and we’re just going to rock out and it’s going to be beautiful.”

Count it as just one more unusual honor for Spalding. If few jazz singers receive such prominent Grammy recognition, perhaps even fewer are pals with the Purple One. “Everybody knows the hype of who he is as an artist,” Spalding says. “But he also happens to be a really lovely person. He’s a really, really cool dude. If you ever got a chance to just sit and have a drink with him, you would be laughing and having a great time.”

Very classy. I'm hoping she performs on one of the nights at MSG this month. I'm really looking forward to hearing her live. Congrats to her on her Grammy nod as well.

I don't think she qualifies under asociated artist in the traditional sense of what is usually posted. I think this belongs in Music: Non-Prince.

She's not a protogeé and he hasn't written any of her music.

So Beautiful & full of Talent.

A Gift to the World & she compliments Prince Nelson indeed.

Glad they work together.

Do you have anything to say about her otherwise or are you just back seat moderating for kicks!

I started a thread on Esperanza back before she had anything at all to do with Prince and aside from a few informed music lovers, nobody knew who she was - as usual.

I've already said plenty about her.

She is one of the most talented & elegant artists Prince has ever worked with.

Them 2gether in a show will be phenomenal.

Elegance is a rare quality & so is Artistry...

(she is true artist as opposed to those being called artists & who doens't have a clue what art is)

When elegance reflects in art it reflects natural beauty, & sure ms Esperanza radiates Beauty,

Prince hasn't worked with a compatible Beauty for over a half decade.....so this will be exciting

December 15 ....WHRE R U ?????

if not for the fact that she is a co-headliner at one of his upcoming shows you would have a point. That alone (at least in context of the WTA shows) makes her an associated artist.

Chaka Khan would be even more associated then, because of Prince-songs which she recorded and her album on NPG Records.

Yet you won't see topics about her getting posted here (maybe occasionally 1 or 2 lost topics). One or a few guest-appearances

on a show might make an artist temporarily "associated" imo. Otherwise we could post over here topics about Lenny Kravitz

(guest-appearances), George Clinton (album on Paisley Park and appearing in Graffiti Bridge), etc...

OK.. but this article directly references Prince and their "friendship"... otherwise I would have placed it over there. OK? Thanks.

Anyhow, I wonder if Prince will have Renato join them for this show? Because if as he said he may join their performances partly, it'd make sense for a jazzy interlude with her band before starting his set, and Renato's style would be ideal for that.

U R absolutely ignorant to what an artist is. This is a forum for associated artists & people.

All proteges without exception is people NOT artist.

It is an impossibility to be an artist & a protege at the same time time.

A protege can serve as a musician tho very few of Prince's protoges does. sadly.

No artist allows another who to write for them. The essence of art is in the writing.

eek i think there are many ways one can be an artist. for someone to get help getting started is not incompatible with being an artist.

Associated simply means that there is some affiliation between the mentioned artist and Prince. Clearly that is now the case with Esperanza Spalding. Regardless of if Prince ever writes for her or she wears a corset and cape. They are now associated artists. Now if you want to get technical she is not a protege but she is an associated artist.

Every REASONABLE person that has been on the org for a while knows that this section is generally reserved for conversations concerning Prince's protogeés. It has been that way since the section was created. Now, because you busters woke up and discovered her after Prince gave her the thumbs up, all of a sudden she has some partial "Prince-girl" status and her threads should go here instead of in the Music non-Prince section where people who actually listened to her prior to her "Prince fan discovery" would recognize and post?

Whatever. Most of the people who listen to Esperanza are jazz heads, not Prince heads.

Even though she and Prince may be friends, her music is definitely her own and sounds nothing like Prince's.

Is this some kind of fanbot attempt to force her into the "Prince box" because she is pretty and has a certain look? I don't get the agression to try to force her into the associated artists section aside from some wishful thinking on the part of Prince fans.

Even other artists like Paula Abdul who have done Prince-penned songs don't get discussed here (when they are discussed). Tom jones covered a Prince song as well as quite a few other artists who normally get discussed in the music non-Prince section. Almost all of the artists in this section are DIRECTLY associated with Prince.

I hope this isn't some weird attempt to try to indirectly credit Esperanza's work to Prince. It wouldn't be the first time its happened on the org. Nobody brings up Lenny in this section and he shared the stage with Prince. I'm trying to understand the path for reasoning for the hardcore push for this association.

i do not know what that is supposed to mean.

but this weekend i saw shrek 4, and you know different people were given specific parts of the movie to create. And they had to pretty much stick to the specifics of the script and story boards, YET they creates some amazing works of art. I would call them artists.

Dude... Someone touch a nerve?

What part of this article mentioning Prince directly and their FRIENDSHIP directly did you miss? Prince isnt friends with Tom Jones or Paula Abdul... If it were soley about Esperanza I would have put it in another thread. Larry Graham isn't a "protege" and he's mentioned a gazillion times in Associated Artists.

Now moving on...
