The Sex Cymbal CD obviously wasn't one of the first 3 releases, but the promo cd was really cool. It came with a real Paiste cymbal. I found it odd at the time that there was a track by Brownmark on it.

Hehe, i just purchased this from an internet shop, i think it is an American promo, but i cannot be sure. My copy is still sealed, which i nice, i have never heard the album before, if i don't like it i can always drive my friends crazy with that cymbal.
It's one of those love-or-hate albums. There's plenty of people on here that hate it.
I personally love it. It was her first release post-Prince and (at least back in the day) the songs were refreshing. I think that if she hadn't fallen ill and had been able to decently promote it, she could've gotten a big hit with "Droppin' Like Flies".

Yep, that is the one track i have heard from the album, i liked it, i honestly cannot see myself "hating" the album, but even if i dislike it, i will still have a pretty cool collectable in my collection.

I like Sex Cymbal a lot, although it definitely hasn't aged well. I thought Loverboy was a jam, and What'cha Gonna Do is great. I love her take on Lady Marmalade as well. |

You've never heard the song Sex Cymbal??? I haven't listened to the CD in ages. I'll have to do that soon. There was some promotion for the CD. Remixes of Sex Cymbal and Droppin' Like Flies (there is a promo fly swatter for that one! lol), appearances on Arsenio Hall and Rick Dee's show. TRUE BLUE |

It is just one of the albums i have always missed....until now. I noticed there was a promo fly swatter for Droppin' Like Flies.....hehe, nice.
I don't think there was much promotion for the album in the UK, though i do recall a couple of ads in the music press.

I don't think Sheila was really into supporting the album. She was still recovering from her collapsed lung about a year before, so that seemed to be part of it. But in the interviews she did do, she often talked about her next project, which was going to be a jazz album. I think by the time Sex Cymbal was released, Sheila wasn't really feeling it. |

Similar thing happened with her self titled third album for Paisley, though under different circumstances. But in terms of promotion, Sheila decided to concentrate on being Prince's drummer rather than do any real promo for the album.

Yeah. Although she did do brief tours for both, apparently. I would kill to have seen a concert in support of the third album. Love on a Blue Train and Pride and the Passion would be awesome to hear live.

Re. Sheila E...
Sheila E. was one of Prince's proteges, one of his drummers and sometimes his girlfriend. It's often glazed over how talented she is in favor of her Prince connection, which is really ridiculous when you see her credits. That said, Sheila had a rather tumultuous relationship with the purple one and, when it was over, she decided to continue recording as a solo artist for Warner Brothers. Her first Prince-free release was the dance/pop album Sex Cymbal, but apart from the title track, the album wasn't a big seller. It's common knowledge from there that Sheila disappeared as a pop-artist and returned to her Latin percussion roots, becoming a member of Gloria Estefan's band and performing with many others before eventually reappearing as a solo recording artist in the early 2000s, but what a lot of people don't know is that she recorded another album for Warner Brothers after Sex Cymbal.
Not much is known about Fe. People became aware of it when someone sold a Warners internal cassette of the album on ebay a few years ago. A very high quality rip of the album eventually surfaced online and has been quietly shared among fans of Sheila and Prince since. I've read criticisms that the album is far more subdued than her live shows and that some of the material was re-recorded for her early 2000s albums, but I still enjoyed Fe very much. Sheila even went so far as to re-record The Glamorous Life as a full-blown Latin percussion party jam, probably knowing that it would be her big chance at getting the album seen by the mainstream. Unfortunately, it must not have been enough for Warners, as the album was shelved and remains unreleased.

I have mixed feelings abou the 'Sex Cymbal' CD.There are some really strong songs on it."Cry Baby" is excellent,as is "Whatcha Gonna Do","Promise Me Love" and "Droppin Like Flies".But several tracks are mediocre ("Funky Attitude","Loverboy") and the remake of "Lady Marmalade" falls flat.Sheila's best album is her self-titled third album, which really should have taken her career to new heights. It's a masterpiece.

Hey...does anyone recall that she performed "Funky Attitude" in the Andrew Dice Clay movie "Adventures of Ford Fairlaine"??? I remember stying up late at night to watch one of those Friday Night video shows to see it...and was QUITE dissapointed.
I agree that her rendition of "Lady Marmalade" was also a dud. I really had expected something funkier.
But overall it's a good album....maybe not as good as "Sheila E.", but definitely better than, say, "Planet Earth".
Did I just say that?

I saw that 'Ford Fairlaine' movie Sheila E. appears in a club scene, performing "Funky Attitude".She appears later performing another song ("Droppin Like Flies"?) if I'm not mistaken.Morris Day has a small role in this film, too.I guess the director was a fan of the Minneapolis sound? lol
"Cry Baby" is such a good song.....a great slow jam.It was released as the third single but with no promotion,it went nowhere. That song should have been a Top 10 R&B smash like "Hold Me" was. |

I love the Glamorous Life era, very steamy and sensual
I didn't like when she at times became too James Brownish during the Romance 1600 era, but I loved it too
I m glad she was bathing in the Purple Rain era though, I just loved it, wish she was in Purple Rain

Hmmm, not sure what you mean. I think the single was the album version (actually, I think Lady Marmalade was the b-side to the Cry Baby single, but I could be remembering wrong). Anyway, I think what you're referring to is the clip of her performance of this song on Arsenio Hall, where she had drums strapped to the backs of scantily clad men. (She also performed the song on Rick Dees' Into the Night late-night talk show, but she didn't have the drums on dudes in that). In that performace, she is definitely Prince-ing it up, and it works great. I love it. But I love the album version too. |

Oh, yeah, you're right. She did a striptease down to fishnets, I think, and did DLF. Lady Marmalade was the second song she did on the show, and the drum guys weren't in that one. |

I might have gotten some of those mixed up
But it must have been a promo release because Sex Symbol that was being played on the radio was not the same as the album release, it was upbeat.
Here is a pic from it, Just watching it again, never realized how gender bending and homoerotic it was http://video.tvguide.com/...oplay=true
