Mayte's music career-A very brief history.
While the music career of Mayte may only have spanned one album, i think that it has enough charm to warrent a few facts being posted. The information that i have on the creation of the album and subsequent promotion are quite thin on the ground, so if anyone has any information that they may want to share please do so. Thanks for reading.
25th July 1990. Prince plays a gig at Estadi Olimpico De Montjuic, in Barcelona, Spain. The gig is attended by 16 year old Mayte Garcia and her mother. She was apparently dragged to the concert by her mother. After the show, Mayte's mother encouraged the girl to engage in a career move. She gave Kirk Johnson a videotape of Mayte dancing, and asked him to deliver it to Prince. About a week later, she received a phonecall asking her to bring another video to a show in Germany.
8th August 1990. Prince plays a gig at Maimarkthalle Mannheim, Germany. Mayte was asked to go backstage and deliver another videotape and to meet Prince. The chemistry between Prince and Mayte was immediate. Prince was said to have said "she was 16, i fell in love."
Early December 1991. Mayte arrives in Minneapolis to work with Prince on the
13th September 1993. Prince commences work on Maytes debut album at Paisley Park. Prince took a number of tracks from the vault which were written from a female perspective to see how they suited Mayte's voice. Among the tracks were outtakes from sessions with Sheila E and Carmen Electra. Tracks were Latino Barbie Doll, If I Could Get Your Attention, The Juice, Carmen On Top, Go Carmen Go and This Is My House. Work on Mayte's album would continue on and off until spring 1995.
5th May 1995. An early mix of Mayte's Child Of The Sun album is made.Though the rough mix contained the same songs as the final release, most of the songs were quite different to the final version. The Rhythm Of Your Heart featured a rap by Prince, which was removed from the final version. Other tracks also featured different music to the final album.
27th November 1995. Release of Child Of The Sun by Mayte on NPG records. The album was turned down by WB records and was never released in the USA, it was distributed in parts of Europe in a licensing deal with Edel records. The album reached a small audience, making it a collectors album among Prince fans. The album was mainly written, performed and produced by Prince, though Kirk Johnson was also involved in production and drum programming duties. There is a cover version of The Commodores classic Brick House. All other tracks were written by Prince except Children Of The Sun and Ain't No Place Like U which are credited to Mayte and Prince. mayte undertook a promotional tour of Europe to promote the album, but reporters seemed to show more interest in her relationship with Prince and the diamond ring she was wearing.
16th December 1995. Mayte performs a short 20 minute set at Glam Slam in Miami for the next two nights. Her set included Children Of The Sun, In Your Gracious Name, Ain't No Place Like U, Mo' Better and If Eye Love U 2Night. A few Mayte quotes from an interview in late '95 early '96? This was to promote Child Of The Sun.Yesterday you were in Munich and today here in Hamburg. The next 2 days you will be in Holland. Where else will this promotion tour take you ? MAYTE: We will do 4 Television shows in London. We go to Spain . Barcelona ? MAYTE: It will be Madrid this time. We will visit Oslo, Stockholm, Bologna. Friday I return to Hamburg and have a photoshoot with AMICA [ German Magazine, first issue out in January 1996 ] . MAYTE: I come back to Germany on November 2nd for a TV show on RTL in Cologne, I think it's called the Late show. Are you going to perform ? MAYTE: Yes, I will perform, but the NPG, they are rehearsing back in Minneapolis, so they can't come It will just be you ? MAYTE: Just me, but I have 2 dancers to it Are you doing other TV appearances ? MAYTE: Yeah, in London and I'm doing one in Bologna, I think it's Italy. I'm doing like four in London. Top of the Pops, MTV, I did the Box, VIVA and now I'm doing VIVA 2. Let's see.... and there is another one in London, I'm not sure about. No White Room ? MAYTE: No... I gotta save that one for the NPG again... It was a very nice show back than... MAYTE: Oh yeah, it was fun. Did he (Prince) write Children of the Sun ( the first track on the album ) especially for your album ? MAYTE: Yes, he wrote that specially for my album. On Exodus there is a line that goes .. these are the days of the children in the sun.. and now you sing... we are the children of the sun, we're gonna dance till the morning sun.. MAYTE: That was a....because so many things are happening bad in the States that I wanted that to be.. I wanted to have a song that would make the people better and he came up with that.. and it was perfect.. | |

Which version of 'If I Love U 2 Night' do orgers prefer, Mayte or Mica Paris? I prefer Mayte's version, her voice is really sweet. I do not own the album, is it worth buying? | |

I prefer Mayte's version too, though i have only heard the Mica paris version twice. Mayte is no singer, and rumour has it that her voice had to be put through various trick boxes to make her sound decent. But i have said it before and i will say it again, the music is of top quality, the songs are catchy and quite upbeat too, uptempo stuff, dancey. I thought that it was going to be an album of love songs and it it is not really like that at all. The album has a nice innocent charm to it, a good wee selection of songs, good for a summers day on your ipod. Ebay has the album from time to time, and i have seen it on amazon too, hunt it down and check it out, if you like Prince, and if you like upbeat happy, pop tunes, you should like Child Of The Sun.

1998. It is announced that an album by Mayte entitled Scorpio is to be released which was to include tracks from Child Of The Sun and also some songs that were newly recorded. The album was never released.

Thanks for the info. I guess one could then surmise then that there were ulterior motives when Mayte's mom suggested a "career move" relating to Price and dancing. A safe assumption would be that Mayte wanted a music career from the beginning and the dancing was a foot-in-the-door move.

^ Am i correct in remembering something about Mayte not really wanting to record an album, but Prince "made" her do it? I could be wrong, but i'm sure i heard that rumour a while back. However, if she really did not want a career in music then i guess she would not have recorded the two "singles" before even meeting Prince.

I actually got the chance 2 meet Mayte in La at a show she did. She was soooo nice. She took pictures with my friend & I. She talked to us for about 20 minutes. I had come from Washington State & my friend came from San Fran 2 c her. We had sent her a message on myspace & told her we were coming so she was looking out 4 us. It was so great 2 meet my idol & have her b so nice, generous & truly greatful 2 have us at her show!!

She made this records (Too Dramatic and Broken Wings) before she moved to Paisley Park (year 1990). It was in Germany. Her mother wanted it. Mayte made a lot of songs this time (she said in on myspace in her fanclub). It's more songs than for only one album! But she don't like it. She dont want to show more. I think she didnt want this singles too but company had another opinion and released it when Mayte started be famous thx work with Prince and NPG. (It's the same record company like promoted CD Child of the sun!!!!) It's a business and I am happy fot a business because I want everything with Mayte and I luv this song. So funny, so sun, so free-minded

Some more info on these singles that i found:
As a teenager living in Germany, Mayte took singing lessons (bless her). The singles were released in Europe in '92 and '93. Broken Wings is a cover version of a song by Mister Mister. Too Dramatic, Stop and I Don't Care were written by Mayte.
