I haven't heard all of them, but these two are just great albums:
The Family (1985) Jill Jones (1987)
I like Mazarati's album too. [Edited 8/22/10 16:43pm] How can I stand 2 stay where I am? / Poor butterfly who don't understand.

That's probably the standard top 10 right there, for most anyone. No one is going to list Good Question or Tony LeMans above that of The Family or Jill Jones.

Don't you love it when people think they know your taste better than you? Or that their statements are written as fact, when it's really all a matter of opinion? TRUE BLUE

If George Clinton is allowed to be viewed as a whole musical career then he is light years above anything else at Paisley. As regards albums on the label The Family's could well be the strongest.

I can see your p.o.v. but in retrospect to most catalogues of other PP's artists it's imo not a fair comparison. And George already had a succesful career before releasing on PP.

"The Time" and "What Time Is It?" stand alone...untouchable and undeniably the best.
As for Paisley Park, there were 3 that stood out IMO...
The Family Jill Jones Madhouse 16
She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

I really just meant the albums that were released on Paisley Park Records, which wouldn't include the Time's first two albums either. TRUE BLUE

I totally agree with the first 2 Time albums, them and the first 2 Sheila E albums and The Family album are, to me personally, the epitomisation of the whole Minneapolis sound of the early to mid 80's (outside of Prince's albums.)

"What Time Is It?"
I was 8 when that sh*t dropped in 82...and I was still bumpin it religiously as a senior in 92!
"Universal freak delight, where'd u get those thighs? Where did u get the nerve 2 wear that miniskirt so high!!"
I havent paid that album the proper respect over the past couple years.
Gotta fix that tonight! She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

1. Sheila E.
2. The Family
3. Madhouse
4. Jill Jones
5. The Time
I would actually round it out with Apollonia 6 at #5 just because I love that album that much but I'm not sure it was a Paisley Park recording (or Vanity, who I saw on another post on the thread for that matter). Didn't PP start around ATWIAD?

Apollonia 6, Vanity 6, the Times first two albums, and Sheila E's first album were not on Paisley Park Records, they were all Warner Brothers. TRUE BLUE

#1 The Family | |

This is what I thought. So then none of Vanity's work was, correct?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Correct. Around The World In A Day was the first Paisley Park label release, followed by Sheila E's Romance 1600. TRUE BLUE

Prince (surprised no one has mentioned this one) Sheila E (yes, Sister Fate) The Time (I appreciate not only getting 6 songs on Pandemonium) Vanity 6 (just fun and loose and retro) Jill Jones (just one) Mazarati (ok, have not heard the lp in full, but enjoy what I have, where is my 12 inch of Player's Ball) The Family (love Screams of Passion, pure artistry)

Prince is a no brainer, that's why I posted this in the AA&P section. Vanity 6 wasn't on PPR. You should really check out the whole Jill Jones and Mazarati lps, good stuff. I could never really get into the Family stuff, besides the Screams of Passion. I just couldn't get into St. Paul's obvious interpretation of Prince's vocals, coming from a pretty white boy trying to be... not sure how to put it and be politcially correct...you get the point!
