my thoughts on morris day, jesse johnson, andre cymone, etc we can all argue til the cows cum home and have a rebirth on how talented they are and what they can do better than prince but the fact remains and stands tall if it wasnt 4 prince none of em would of been heard of or thought of.thats y in every innerview with any of em prince is brought cuz the world only cared about through there knowing prince wendy and lisa everybody claim what they did 4 prince music if they did so much y havent they had any #1's of there own or million selling albums.morris day and the time can talk all the shit they wanna but its b/c of prince that 20 years later they still touring and playing songs he wrote and produced so ummm i just wanna say respect is due 2 prince from all of em in every fashion

How do you plug Andre Cymone into this rant? first of all seems like Prince was on Tavis Smiley alluding to the fact you never would have heard Prince if not for Andre Cymone and his brother and I'd love to see the interview where Andre says he wouldnt have been without Prince. I have been looking for him for a film project havent been able to track him down so hes hardly out here saying anything...if anyone knows how to contact him please let me know

I wouldn't go so far as to group people like Wendy and Lisa into that category. They were from Cali and they already had musical families. Had they not gotten pulled into Princes world there is no reason to think they could have not done well for themselves. Heck - as talented as Prince is had he not been hooked into the machine behind him back in the day we might not know who HE is. Number one songs have NOTHING to do with talent my friend. That doesn't take away from his talent or writing chops back in the day nor am I saying he doesn't deserve it. But you can't go lumping everyone together JUST because they worked with Prince. I can point out that Prince doesn't have Emmy's for his music, but does that really matter?

yea number ones and all of that is included all that could be done in music prince has done and none of the people in prince world come close 2 matching him all of them that left the prince fold got there deals b/c of there prince connect and complained when the companies wanted a prince sound they werent interested in them only what they had in connection with prince yea wendy and lisa family might of been musical but they werent the jacksons shit most people dont even know wendy or lisa so called famous dads but they know of both of em through there prince connections u can say what u want its all about what prince started i never said it was close 2 being about emmys grammies or none of that but now that u mention prince do have all that and they dont.

I can say they've ALL done quite well after Prince.....ESPECIALLY Jam & Lewis!!!!!!! Even though Morris' solo projects were aiiight (even COLOR OF SUCCESS), he branched out into film & television. Wendy & Lisa are scoring film & television. Jesse did score music for some films as well (EVE'S BAYOU among them). Andre Cymone rejuvenated Jody Watley's career after she left Shalamar. I think if they talk sh*t about him, it's ALL THE WRONG SH*T he did to them!!!! There is still mutual respect on both sides (well maybe except Jill Jones). THEY KNOW, HE (P) KNOWS and GOD (JEHOVAH) KNOWS......................

can you write so it makes sense? Specifically W&L- easy to look up : As sessionists and producers, they have also appeared, together or separately, on albums by Sheryl Crow, Eric Clapton, Neil Finn, Joni Mitchell, Meshell Ndegeocello, Michael Penn, Liz Phair, Seal, and Victoria Williams, to name a few. They have been frequent collaborators with k.d. lang, whom they first worked with during Eroica; they have played on all of her subsequent albums. any of those peole the world gives a damn about? they wrote theme music and background scores for TV-shows such as Crossing Jordan, Bionic Woman, Carnivàle and Heroes (an Now Emmy nominated for Nurse Jackie) No one would have known about Prince if it wasn't for the backing of WB. THat's just the way the record industry works. I also know a whole lot of non talents with number one hits..so what does that say?
If they had not met Prince many of them might have gone on to do more even earlier. Take a good look at what all the people like Jam and Lewis, W&L, Susannah, Paul Peterson have done on their own. Maybe they got a foot in because of Prince, but you don't maintain without talent.

u a dumb turkey u must b fat cuz only somebody fat would say something stupid like that about a record company get over your lameness today ok

Do you REALLY communicate like this with people? Or are you trying to be in some reality show? Turkey? Anyway...I worked in radio back in the 80s. And that is EXACTLY how it was. A record label could make or break you. There was no such thing as independent (or very few) labels. No internet, youtube. So labels controlled it all. Try reading a few books on the industry before you say something so....bizarre. PS- I'm not in any way shape or form fat. Not that there's anything wrong with that

Any artist who owes his/her exposure credit to another artist doesn't owe their work to another artist. In the long run, it doesn't matter who exposed them. None of them owe their talent to Prince and nothing you can say can change that. Prince didn't teach them to play and they get respect for being great musicians as soon as they pick up their instruments. They don't owe their talent to Prince and there's no way you can credit him for THEIR work.

Well, there actually were numerous of independent labels during the 80's : www.zeiger.franken.de

cbarnes3121, if you ever learn how to write properly I might read your posts.
So, go back to school, don't insult people just because they don't agree with you and, last but not least, try to have something interesting to say.

Sometimes its all about who you surround yourself with. I'm not a musician but if I was I would want to be around creative people. People you can vibe off of. Prince is Prince. Multitalented a true legend...........no one can take that away from him. He was making hits before Lisa and Wendy, Morris D. and Andre. I always detect bitterness from Wendy when ever she does an interview and Prince name pops up. She needs to get over it

totally aware of these - but a lot of them were 12" type labels. So not so many "full albums" - at least not compared with the majors. Mostly singles. And when i say indie I mean really independent..as in not bankrolled. Again, many of the little guys were bankrolled pretty well. I dealt with a lot of them back in the day since they wanted us to play their artists:)

Prince was making hits in the company of these musicians.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
He was making "hits" before Andre? Name them. Andre was in his first band, which was basically Andre's band before Prince got signed. As Zannaloaf said, Prince was making hits in the company of these musicians, except Andre. He was making hits WITH Andre and vice versa. Andre was part of the team.

Aha, . Thanks for your inside-info. I've seen though quite some private-label albums which have been sold since ebay started online. If you check at www.popsike.com, then there many of those Lp's. I've bought a few of them myself, and some of these were pressed around the 80's in limited quality.

Okay I stand corrected Andre was there.........some of the others was not. But I'm saying this to say Prince is a legend..............and he deserves to be.

Emmy's are given for Television productions. As far as I know Prince has never did any music for television. [Edited 8/4/10 12:01pm]

Why does everyone act as if someone is taking that away from him? He's in the R&R Hall Of Fame! It doesn't get any more legend than that. Seems like some people want him declared the god of all music or some shit. That's just lunacy. Anyway, the thread starter started this thread on some "it doesn't matter how talented they are, they owe Prince" B.S. when all they owe him is credit for exposure. He didn't teach them how to play. They all played a part in the MN scene and making the music that came out in that era. Prince got the deal but he didn't do it alone. A scene can circle around one person, but no one person makes a scene.
