He's credited with drums on his first two solo jpints also.

I could really care less but neither of them have much recorded material when it comes to drumming.

Yeah you always here about how bad Morris is, but I haven't seen him play. Jellybean on the otherhand is a bad Mother Fucker. Only person I've ever heard get 777-9311 right and he does it every time.

I got my uncle on this one, JellyBean. But being ever so humble, I am sure that my uncle would say uncle Morris was better.

The talent of old school guys like this always grabs me. You just don't have that in a lot of musicians today. Look at Bean, Morris and any of the other guys in the Time. Bean is a fantastic drummer, but he's also a great guitarist (not to mention producer). Some of his Flyte Tyme productions are my favorites -- Alex O.'s "Criticize," "Nona's Why Should I Cry," N.E.'s "Crucial." Morris (although I've never seen him live) can definitely hold his own on the skins. I think it speaks highly of both Morris and Bean that someone as picky as P still mentions them in the drumming context (Ol Skool Company). Morris was also a seriouly funny guy and could sing, so that vibe shifted him to a lead singing position (wonder if he'd ever even contiplated that before P set that up). Terry Lewis could sing as well as he plays bass. His bkgd vocals were always prominent on the Time and Flyte Tyme recordings. And then there's Jesse, who plays everything but drums (as far as I know). I've always wanted to see a Time concert with the original 7, where they shift positions for a couple songs -- Morris on drums, Jellybean on guitar, Jesse and/or Terry singing lead, etc. Sorry I've gotten a bit off topic, but talking about Morris playing drums always makes me think of how talented/versatile older musicians were/are.

That being said, I'd take either one. But I'd lean towards Bean, because he's who I've heard the most. Yeah, I don't think anyone can recreate P's Linn programming from 777-9311 as well as Bean can. That's saying something.

Hey, he also played on 'The New Power Generation' from Graffiti Bridge if I'm not mistaken. He kills 'em on Tricky and Cloreen. Would love to see Morris pick up the sticks one day. Again, back in the day, P said something to the effect of if he would build a perfect group, Morris would be on drums.....

I was really surprised how great a singer Terry is when I saw him and Jam show how they made the Force MD's "Tender Love" (I think it's on the Purple Rain extras DVD? I know I saw it somewhere). Terry sang the vocals. I had no idea! If I'm not mistaken, I seem to remember Terry being one of the few people WITHOUT a mic during Time performances (whereas even Jerome usually has one along with his one Simmons drum pad! LOL)

Anyone ever saw the boot-dvd of The Time @ The Roxy , circa 1981 ?

The show starts with "The Stick", and you hear ladies scream & cream along with the intro-rap ("...Mmm, my stick... i just luv my stick...")

Everytime when that singing-line is repeated, flashlights under Jilly-B's drumkit lit-up. Awesome trick & sight. That's some raw underground footage.

Jimmy-J is doing some ruthless solowork on a portable-synth as well. Camera-quality is raw tho, but noneless worth to check that recorded show when possible.

I think it's assumed (maybe even in the book the Vault) that Prince played all instruments on the first 2 time albums with maybe a keyboard solo here or there by Fink or Lisa.

What portable synth do you mean form the Time concert? They didn't have keytars back in 1981

Sure but what is on those albums that really showcase anything on drums to judge Day's skills? There is a Prince gig from 82 with Day on drums that is the most impressive I have heard

I read somewhere part of Prince's plan when he put his first touring band together after he got a deal was to make it a mix of different race and gender, not neccesarily the best individual players.

I'm glad Morris wasn't the drummer. Can you imagine anybody else being the singer of the Time?
