The Time Las Vegas, NV May 29, 2010 review

I went and saw the Time at Hilton Theater in Las Vegas, NV on May 29, 2010. This was my second show of the year, my 9th with the original line up and my 54th overall.

The day started much like Friday night ended. Me feeling like ass. I made my way down to the buffet and tried to eat, but I wasn't able to stomach very much. Arlington and I went to the showroom and checked it out. We actually got on the stage where the band would play later that night. Hung out with some of the fellas and caught up. Later I got to play roadie as I went to one of the band members room and brought some of his gear down to the showroom. I chilled in the room for awhile and then came back to the show room for the sound check.

I caught up with the fellas that I hadn't talked to yet and then took a seat in the front row. Now I've been to sound checks before and I'm expecting them to run through a few numbers or work on specific sections of songs. Wrong. The band basically played the whole show except for the Jesse spot light. WOW my own 90 minute Time concert. Kick Ass. A little bit before and after the full band work out Jesse, Jellybean and Terry played about 4 Jesse solo songs, ones that they didn't play in the actual show. That was special treat.

As I was still feeling like crap, I went back up to the room to rest and eventually get ready for the show. I met up with the fellas and went through the bowels of the Hilton into the back way of back stage area. I was pimped out myself that night wearing the baggies, skinny tie and of course the Stacy Adams. Hung out back stage until show time and then made my way to the roped off VIP section to the left of the stage. Well on to the show

Here is the Line-up
Morris Day- Vocals and Cool
Jerome Benton-Valet, Dancer, background vocals and general mischief maker
Jimmy Jam-Keyboards and MC
Monte Moir-Keyboards and background vocals
Terry Lewis- Bass and background vocals
Jellybean Johnson- Drums
Jesse Johnson-Guitar and lead vocals

Here is the setlist with my comments to follow
1. Intro
2. Get it up
3. Cool
4. Wild and Loose
5. 777-9311
6. The Stick
7. Blondie
8. My Drawers
9. Fishnet
10. The Oak Tree
11. Jerk Out
12. The Skillet
13. Bleeding Heart
14. Be your man
15. Can you help me
16. Free world
17. If the kid can't make you come
18. Ice Cream castles
19. Gigolos get lonely too
20. The Walk
21. The Bird
22. Jungle Love

The show was around 90 minutes long. The band came to the stage and were playing the same intro music that they did in 08. Jimmy Jam introduced each member and they did the old school posse checking the merchandise before they surged into Get it up. Cool was next and this was the long version with the funky ass half beat. Monte and Jimmy switching sides and playing their counterparts keyboards for this number. Morris asked "What time is it?" which was the cue for Wild and loose. 777-9311 followed along with The Stick. Jesse was tearing that shit up for the two rock numbers Blondie and My Drawers. Next was Morris's two biggest solo hits: Fishnet and The Oak Tree. Jerk Out followed with Jerome doing the splits which got the crowd excited. Speaking of the crowd. there was a very good one for this show. I would guess the place was about 3/4 full and they were really into the show.

The highlight of the night for me was next. "We don't need no Microwave" The band tore into a spirited version of my favorite Time tune: The Skillet. Morris left the stage and let Jesse do his thing as he just destroyed the solo, throwing in obscure Hendrix licks into it before going into outer space. Then he slowed it down for some blues with Jellybean and Terry accompanying him. Jerome came back on stage to get the crowd hyped as Jesse launched into a trio of his solo hits. Be your man followed by Can you Help me and Free world. The crowd gave him a well deserved round of applause.

The full band came back on stage for If the Kid can't make you come. Jesse was trying to hide from the woman that Jerome got on stage for this bit, but eventually he came out and played some inspired blues licks.Ice Cream castles was next with all the ladies dancing on stage. Morris in full pimp mode and the fur coat did Gigolos followed by The Walk. The normal end of the show was The Bird with probably 30 or more people on stage dancing. Morris left the stage. Jimmy commented on it being the bands 30 th anniversary next year and said the new album would be out later this year. Sweet. Morris returned for the final number of the night Jungle Love.

I went back stage and hung out with the fellas. They had a meet and greet to go to, but came back and visited for awhile. Basically they had to kick me and Bean out as we were the last ones to leave. As we were walking across the casino floor random people are yelling "Rhastus" WTF. Surreal. Some drunk guy was hugging on me wanting me to sign his record. WOW. I decided I had enuff and went back to the room. There was an after party at the night club and I hear it was off the chain, but I just felt so bad at this point I retired to my room for the evening and tried to get better for the next days adventures

Sounds like a blast. Thanks for the write-up. I soooo hope that some soundboards from these shows surface.

And the news of the new album is exciting - though, in a "not gonna hold my breath" kind of way. I hope it does see the light this year.

If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

They did 'Skillet'? Now that would be worth seeing. Also, 'The Stick'.
