Oh he did say it in the interview?

I haven't read the interview yet, but I just have a feeling they are. lol

The interview is very indirect to say the least. The interviewer from Ebony said " You introduced Bria Valente as your girlfriend. Are you looking for long-term commitment?" NEVER is Prince quoted directly as saying "Bria is my girlfriend" or " this is my girlfriend Bria" . We are lead to believe by the way that Harriette Cole frames the question that he did infact say something like that to her, but he is NEVER on the record as saying such.

His answer to the commitment question is again very very indirect. He doesn't even say her name. Instead he replys "Self-interest is on the back burner 4 now." and immediately changes the subject to the record industry and white people having the ownership of black peoples music etc. he totally avoids even saying the name "Bria". If infact Bria is his girlfriend this backburner treatment has to be a wee bit uncomfortable.

Yeah, I tried to talk about this "back burner" thing in the ebony interview topic lol

It is anything but friendly in my eyes! At least he could say that he is very happy with his

love life or something like that, instead of saying self-intereset is on the back burner.

Nah! lol

Self-interest is on the back burner is his answer to the questions "do you looking for long-term

commitment, do you have family plans bla bla.. Doesn't that say a lot?

He isn't much interested in such things with Bria. If I would be in Brias situation I would be like eek

What the ... do you say lol

Extremely strange, really.

But spread your word to the world Prince, right ? Yeah!

yeah, he so quickly got off the topic and I don't think it was because of any Jehovah Witness thing at all. As I said on another thread Witnesses do not date, they court and either your seriously interested in a woman or forget it. The whole back burner concept is not a witness one for sure. Having a woman on the back burner to me means having a woman within reach at any given time you so choose. People say that when he was married to Mayte and things started to go badly he didn't fight harder to save his marriage because he had Manuela "on the back burner". Prince is extremely efficient at keeping women on "the back burner" and giving them just enough encouragement that they stay there verses tell him a few choice words.

Lets face it, who else does Bria have? Do you really picture her dating another Witness if things don't work out with Prince? She has all her eggs in his basket, so to speak, and so there she sits shaking everything she's got and hoping that he pays her at least a little bit of attention. Occasionally there is some "Elixer" duet going on but I would bet she solo's alot like she talked about in "Here I Come".

Right, I heard he was very indirect about addressing that. I still don't think that relationship is totally platonic lol Not that it's any of my business, but he might as well just come on out with it. He ain't foolin nobody. lol I know he's supposed to be a Witness but he ain't foolin nobody with that either.

I think the way the interviewer said "You introduced Bria" lets you know that she was told by Prince and not anybody else that Bria was his girlfriend and now he could not take that back.

I'm still waiting for Tamar's album.

And why is that?

Tamar's album has being doing the rounds for more than 2 years.

Bria's album is maybe more bearable for me than its two companions. 'Something U already know' is a very good track (not especially in Bria's voice, tho).

Deeming the album 'a masterpiece' is like saying Carmen Electra is a musical genius.

What irks me more about Bria is that she 'wasn't allowed' to sing live. That alone makes me consider her a sort of puppet.

Why does singing live matter so much? THis was her first album. Would her singing live make a difference to what is on the album? No intelligent answers yet.

eek eek imagine Prince would not perform his songs live. YES! live singing matters a lot!!!

Well I will try to explain. If people love the sound of your voice they will scoop your music up without waiting to see what you sound like out of the studio. Think of Enya. Anyway I think Ann Murray, Karen Carpenter, Aretha, Gladys etc could sell without appearing on stage 'cause they had that kind of voice that sold itself.

Meanwhile , Madonna, Cher, Brittney, even Cindy Lauper, it's their visual show that helps make up for a lack in the vocals.

Think of it as a test. If you get a 70 that just passing, but if you do the bonus essay on the back of the test you get an extra ten points giving you a B. Madonna, Cher, Vanity etc were smart enough to see that they needed the bonus points of great videos and live shows if they were ever going to be big. Love may not make Prince blind but it makes him a bit hard of hearing and he saw her as having a beautiful voice were at most she had a pretty one. Anyway, hopefully the giving of 10 songs to Bria was a one shot deal and not a trend. neutral

i like bria's album

its very soothing

her voice is tender but sometimes she sounds like she not putting her all in the songs and she just flirting with mic ..lol idk

but when she sang in song of the heart , idk seemed like her voice had character and i liked it her " song, the song " part

she kinda reminds me of Vanessa Williams but not as likable

and sometimes she sound a lil like chante moore but not as strong

i love to hear bria sing a romantic ballad kinda like "save the best for last"

my personal opinion she's ok

i think she can do better though

plus there something about her that is just ......idk is kinda boring to me i don't know what it is hmm

i wanna like her but the little person in my head gets distracted and bored and she comes across as a snobbish

but i dont know bria personally so its wrong of me to judge her( lol lol but i can't help it),

she could be nicest person in the world, idk but i wish the best in her music career and future endeavorers biggrin

Let me start out by admitting that I did not purchase Lotus Flow3r and could not imagine being "forced" to purchase 2 Prince CD's and 1 CD for his woman....Just because! But, I have heard a few cuts.

Here's my 2 cents. Prince promoted Bria during his own Lotus Flower interviews. He said that she has a "Beautiful Voice", and he said that he told her that if she was going to do it....she has to do it differently. Different than any other artist out there. Although I do not think that Bria is a "singer", she does have a nice voice (there is a difference yanno). However, after all that "she's new, and not like any other".....I play a track and she sounds like a wannabe Amel Larreux. I was like WTF?

As a matter of fact, during the very interview where Prince promoted Bria, he had to backpeddle because I guess he previously compared her to Sade, and he was clear to make his point that he did not intend to state that she sounded like Sade.

Oh Well, she sounds better than Janet Jackson. But I haven't seen her working hard. When you only have "a nice voice" and cant really get down and sing....you better be moving that azz dancing your behind off like Janet Jackson, or playing the drums until you are dizzy and are about to pass out like Sheila E. You just cant "look pretty" and have an "ok voice" and clip your CD to one of the most famous artists in the world and think that's gonna fly. Cause you know what, I see a crash and burn of the Carmen Electra type in the future.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

at least carmen electra danced her ass off doing splits and Arabesque everywhere

i heard bria was a back-up dancer , so why wont she show us some moves

and why she doesn't perform live is beyond me

if my non- singing ass can get up and perform in front of an audience ,why cant she? eek

its so strange to me eek

I don't think Bria really cares about whether she has a career or not. I don't think that is what she is concentrating on at all. I think for her, it's her career that is on the back burner and she is working on other things I guess. Honestly I don't think she ever had a burning desire to be a soloist the way Katie Perry or Madonna did. I think it was more like if it happens it happens, if not, oh well I tried. I have a feeling that she isn't too crazy about still being unmarried.

Prince aint marrying that girl. If he was....it woulda happened already. If I had two failed marriages I'd be very very selective about the next spouse. Because each time you get divorced you lose 1/2 of your income. For all of those people who wanna say that he's broke....no better way to be "more broke" than to keep getting married to the wrong people and then getting divorced.

When i saw Bria talk on Tavis Smiley I couldn't really gauge her personality, she seemed nervous and a bit defensive.

She is very poised IMO. She didn't seem so much defensive as a bit guarded, choosing her words wisely. I am sure she also knew exactly what she was going to be asked before the interview. There wasn't a note of sponteniety there at all; very, very, controlled. She also moves like someone who is use to being infront of the camera. Again, very aware of herself and how she may be percieved. Personally I like to be a bit more layed back and spontaneous and I enjoy people who are the same way. When people are too controlled I feel like I am playing a chess game. It is as if everything they say to me is gaged by what kind of reaction that they expect that I will have.

Yes, "gaurded" is a much better word to describe what I saw. There was nothing said to really make her "defend" against anything. But she was in fact overly guarded. I didn't think she was so much "poised" in the Tavis interview in my opinion, I saw a lot of "silent" nervousness.

Bria was a model, reportedly was in one or more of Ursher's videos, I'm sure she is used to being in front of the camera....but perhaps she is not used to giving many interviews.

You know her interview was much like her album. She came off pleasant enough, she didn't hit a wrong note and there was nothing to laugh at or anything. It was just blah, no real showing of any personality and nothing to seperate her from the pack. There was nothing that would leave your remembering her at all. Just plain vanilla, that's all.

It is subtle and mature Prince music. GRown folks music. SO it is lost on those who have not developed comprehension of this style. Some still want to hear 80s Prince and anything that doesnt rock is dismissed.

Why does singing live matter so much? THis was her first album. Would her singing live make a difference to what is on the album? No intelligent answers yet.

Did you just try to excuse an artist from not performing live by trying to DOWNPLAY THE SIGNIFICANCE OF LIVE PERFORMING? I swear you fanbots are nutty as hell.

ARTISTS ARE SUPPOSED TO PERFORM LIVE. If you can't do it live, you can't do it. Plain and simple.

Records originally were made to demonstrate an artist's abilities. They were called demonstration records. Now they are supposed to substitute for them?

I'm sorry but performing live is part of the job and VERY FEW artists can have a successful career without doing it (Steely Dan excluded).

Its part of the job. It goes with the territory. At some point, if you are to be taken seriously as an artist, you HAVE to get on stage and prove your worth.

That being said, who's to say she can't? I would assume that unless her record was autotuned to death, she can sing her songs.

I'd have to fully agree with you there. But that bold font looks a bit crazed when you type large paragaraphs (just saying rolleyes ). But if the artist "can't do it live, then they cant do it" is 100% true. From what I listened to....I did not hear any signs of an autotune. However auto-tune are not, the studio is a protective environment. You can lay a track down 100 times until you get it right. There are all sorts of enhancements done on the track to make the artist sound better than what he/she really is.

This is why it is necessary to perform live. In addition...it helps to market your product.

True-people will hate Bria just for one thing-CUZ SHE HAS/GOT PRINCE! The lady's voice is actually pretty-the cd sounds nice.

Really? The one reason people can have for not caring for Bria - to whatever degree or for whatever reason - is because she's with Prince? You honestly believe that, really?

I know it's already been stated a billion times before, and better, on a billion previous threads but heck, I'll repeat it: I think it's a little unfair to say people will 'hate' on Bria only because she has Prince. I'm not a Bria fan, and I think she is a sub-par "talent", but my opinion is hardly because I'm JELLUS or because I want to be with Prince.

You're painting with a pretty broad brush there, nursev.

But it ISN'T true.

I agree that whatever woman Prince is associated with romantically at any time is going to be raked over the coals to some degree, and that a significant percentage of that behavior can be attributed to some form of jealousy...but come on - not 100% of the disparaging remarks made about Bria are based in that emotion, and you really discredit your own argument by making such a ridiculous assertion.

I'm glad you enjoy Bria's album and, like I said in my serious response, I don't think it's a horrible album either. I just don't think it's an "absolute masterpiece" or even great. And if you are honest you will have to admit that there are a number of valid reasons behind certain shots taken at Bria, or to not feel she deserves raves about what an amazing addition she is to the musical world.

Here's my unfair assertion: I think everyone who likes Bria and fawns over her CD and her in general is nothing but a buttkisser hoping to suck up to Bria, to Prince, or to whoever and that Prince could start dating Roseanne Barr and suddenly those same people would become Roseanne Barr fans and write extensive posts praising her beauty and singing talent. Get my point?

Come on Ruby! How long have you been on the Org? You've seen these folks hate on everything from Prince's hair to the bottom of his shoes neutral So whatever woman he is dating is no exception and yes I honestly think folks on here hate on Bria for that sole reason. They did it to Tamar also and who even knew if Prince was actually doing his thing with her eek Folks on here drag these poor women through the mud just for the satisfaction of making Prince look bad (except Mani-she is another thread falloff ). What has Bria done to cause all this hate? Yeah the stories about her friends leaking info pop up every now and then, but seriously where did all this hatred for this lady come from?

What I don't get is if I disagree with the OP and say that I don't think Bria is a great singer or even an good singer... just an ok singer, maybe someone who gets props at your local Karaoke bar... that some how my opinion is suddenly transformed into HATE. That is really comical to me.

And to say that Bria isn't a great beauty just an attractive woman but not in the same league of good looks as young Vanity, Mayte, or Mani... that doesn't mean that HATE... just we have a difference of opinion.

Now I do agree some are jealous. I think the comments about "Brian" and looking like a man, springs from hate... it is just mean. But I don't think Bria is a good singer, I don't think she is a knock down beauty... and

I don't want Prince, and don' want to crack on his latest girl. I am too tall and big (well with Bria in the picture maybe you can be a tall amazon woman and still have a chance to hook up with Prince), and never ever want to fall in love with a pimp2.

Now I would like to see Prince and Mayte get back together because they seemed so happy and in love together... but that is another thread. lol

I have been coming to the org for at least 9 years and I've been a Prince fan since the early 80s. I know full well about the pettiness and immature attacks taken against the women in Prince's life. I'm not arguing with you that that happens...it does.

I think I need some clarification from you about your stance in this little discussion, though: you say that EVERY opinion about Bria that is anything but praise and adoration and all things positive stems from "jealousy" and is "hate"..is that correct? Or are there levels of 'negative' opinions about her which aren't extreme enough to merit the "jealousy" label. Like me, for instance- I think her album is okay, but nothing spectacular or outstanding. My opinion is that the album is mostly tolerable due to Prince's hand, and not because I think Bria is a massive talent. I think it's weird she was touted as the next Sade and hyped too much before her CD came out in light of the fact that she never even performed one song live, even once (not to mention she's HARDLY the next Sade...). As for her looks, well, I won't pick them apart in detail so I'll just say I don't consider her any better than a million other forgettable models out there, and she's in the very low rank when I compare her to previous women Prince has been with.

So, by your standards, do you believe that the "sole reason" behind my opinions stated above is I'm jealous of Bria and am angry she's with Prince?

Finally, I'd like to make clear at this point that, for me, this debate/discussion is more about unfairly dismissing and discounting reasonable opinions of a less-than-fawny or positive nature any why that is wrong and smallminded than it is about Bria herself.

See beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Although I think Mayte is "cute"...I never thought that she was a "drop dead georgous" beauty. She looks like an attractive Puerto Rican woman with good make-up, and nothing more in my opinion.

I get why perhaps some bold people have expressed that Bria looks like a man. Ha! I actually thought it myself but dared not to say it less I be labeled a "hater". She has an elongated box shaped head in my opinion, and a "strong chin". HOWEVER she is attractive as most drag queens are (not saying that she's a drag queen, but if you see a good one...they can look absolutely stunning). Bria is attractive, but I "get" why somefolks have called her "Brian".

Vocally....sweet sounding voice (which does not mean she can really sing)...Amel Laureaux sound alike...not original at all. Needs to get out there and shake her money maker and sing live to prove to fans that she's not just a "studio singer"....and do some gigs.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

I think it is a wonderful album. Her voice is soothing and beautiful. Some people don't dig it but to each their own. I enjoy it and hope that she will record another one soon especially with Prince.

cool

It is subtle and mature Prince music. GRown folks music. SO it is lost on those who have not developed comprehension of this style. Some still want to hear 80s Prince and anything that doesnt rock is dismissed.

At nearly 49 I think I am grown folk. I am grown folk enough to see that most people have not been critical at all of the lyrics or the music itself. Most folks have just pointed out that the lady who is the soloist does not give anything special of her own to the music. She doesn't add anything and therefore some of those songs would have gone further and been more enjoyable had a different female singer been the lucky one to have been chosen to record them. Personally I have said this before, Shelby J would have given so much more to two songs that I like alot " All This Love" and "Something U Already know" . I would not say that Bria ruined those songs, she didn't sing off-key or anything. She simply fails to truly commit herself to a song and make it pop. She does nothing with it that anybody else who was the best singer of the graduating class in High School wouldn't have done.

I wasn't into Prince myself until lately. I am not someone who cares to hear a 52 year old man keep singing about picking up one-night stands and watching women masturbate into infinitum.

Having read most of the posts on this thread I saw few that complained about the quality of the songs themselves and few orgers are so lacking in maturity that they can not appretiate the subtle beauty of, IMO, some of the best songs on the 3CD set. (the only song I think she sounded bad on was 2night, it just sounded silly and unconvicing. Again Shelby would have been perfect for that song.)

There came a time when the risk of remaining tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom. Anais Nin.
