Tony M What I've picked up from my time at the Org, that rapper Tony M is one of the most hated people on the planet earth, but I don't think he's that bad.He had his moments in My Name is Prince, Sexy M.F., and The Flow. Judging fairly and reasonably, what do you guys think of him?

And to answer your question, i think he was a really decent rapper in the studio, but a complete disaster live: there he was shouting more than rapping, and therefore his voice, which sounded quite smooth on records, sounded more like barking.
Just compare the studio version of "Call The Law" with its "Sacrifice Of Victor" video live conterpart to see what i mean A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Just compare the studio version of "Call The Law" with its "Sacrifice Of Victor" video live conterpart to see what i mean I totally agree. I saw Tony M perform live several times and he did shout rather than sing. It sounded awful. However, I didn't mind him on the cds. TRUE BLUE

Just compare the studio version of "Call The Law" with its "Sacrifice Of Victor" video live conterpart to see what i mean I'm afraid that is the truth with most rappers. The Albums Rock but to see them live is to see some bloke striding around a stage flipping his hands and shouting down a mic. Don't believe me then go see any rapper ...take your pick! Not one can carry a tune hence why most top producers work with rappers, cause they sure need some-one to produce a finished product! The right to free discussion is protected!!

... considering how P was going for the Hip Hop Edge Tony fit in nicely, I thought. Now if he ever came out with an album now or back then I could not answer if I would have bought it like I buy the rest of the related artist music. Peace ... & Stay Funky ...

I don't think anyone wastes the time with HATING Tony M (gheez, this is the 2nd thread to pop up talking about hating someone in the past hour or so). But Prince fans, like any fan base, know what they like and what they don't. Many feel Tony M. was an embarrassment, and frankly they are right. In concert, the general consensus you read is correct - he's loud, muddled, and lazy. Even on record, his rapping isn't that impressive.
I started a thread about editing Tony M. out of the D&P and songs. It did wonders for me with D&P. I was never a huge fan of that album. The rapping really did put me off. (I also felt in general that Prince was trying too hard to be a big star again.) However, taking TM out and listening to the album again made me really appreciate it. (He's still in "Gett Off", as well as little bits of "I'ma push up on it" in a couple of songs.) I always loved the album, but him being out of it is even better. Last night, I took a dive and edited him out of "The Max". Little tricky, but shit...that was my favorite song before. I'm damn near wet over it now! haha
I just think Prince was suddenly following trends by 1990, rather than creating them. TC Ellis and Tony M were just examples of that. Plus they weren't talented in rapping, at all. I'll say this again, in case you hadn't read it. When I was editing the raps out of the D&P songs, I noticed one thing: All the raps were at the end of the songs for the most part. It was almost like Prince had these great songs, then at the last minute, to be popular, he decided to add the rapping to them. It was an afterthought, not the driving force. When you listen to the songs w/o those raps, you realize how insignificant Tony M. really is in Prince's music. Thankfully he's on less songs on the album (the album has more songs than D&P I think anyway). But to hear "Love 2 The 9's" or even "Sexy MF" without his fucking rapping, the songs are SONGS again. I'm sure he's highly successful at State Farm, but he'll never be successful in rapping again. He was about as hard core or ghetto as 50 Cent's boyfriend.

My songs aren't fakes. They're edits, and fat trimming on a couple of other tracks. Huge difference. Besides, I'm proud of the edits, so I'd definitely promote it as such.

I don't know how you can dislike a band member so much that you go to the extent of editing him near out of existence. Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

Well, a fan-made edit is a fake songs if they download them randomly, and prince's discography is enough of a huge mess as it is without adding edits or remixes which ain't genuine A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Which makes me think: how does it sound if you edit Tony out of the whole Goldnigga album and Carmen & Tony out of the whole Carmen Electra album? Now THAT would be interesting A COMPREHENSIVE PRINCE DISCOGRAPHY (work in progress ^^): https://sites.google.com/...scography/

Exactly correct. As I stated, I'm quite proud of the edits I did, so I'd definitely label them that way so people knew. Besides, on my original "Free Tony M." thread, I had a buttload of people Orgnote me asking to hear the edited songs, and I never heard one negative response to say "they're better WITH Tony in them". No, I'm not some genius editor. The edits just work quite well.

I understand. databank said: What about my "Goldnigga" proposal? I'd LOVE to hear that (that'd make a weird instrumental album)
It'd be like a 30 second single. I'm not sure you could really edit him out of that album. The plus of the D&P and stuff is that the raps had their own section, and it was easy to just cut that section out. The song was 30 seconds or 45 seconds shorter, but it flowed well. I didn't replace the edited parts with some instrumental section of the song (except in "The Max" to keep the integrity of the chorus). With Goldnigga, it'd be a huge chop, similar to taking out the rap in "Da Da Da". It'd be next to nothing left.
Plus I've not really listened to that album in eons, so I'm not quite familiar enough to know what to do with it anyway. I know "Call the Law". That would end up being about 90 seconds of song with Tony's raps taken out. . [Edited 4/17/10 11:09am]

Yeah what he should have done, is come out on stage and say "y'all know the words" and hold his ear out. Rappers are good at shouting, look at the Ying Yang Twins and Lil Jon, case in point. So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time
