DOES VANITY 6'S "MAKE-UP" SAMPLE KENI BURKE'S "YOU'RE THE BEST?"

I've never really heard of this guy before, but the underlying beats are similar. Have a listen...

Prince wasn't sampling anyone. He was at the peak of his talent during those years, and would be for years to come.

Someone made the point, perhaps Paul McCartney, that songs are bound to repeat themselves at some point. There are only 8 notes in the scale. Only 88 keys on the keyboard. Only so many chords in the spectrum. Therein lies the challenge of sounds, arrangement, delivery, etc. The 80's were incredibly experimental with the onset of drum machines, and new technology in the control room. As much as the 80's had a "sound", as does the "Mpls Sound", there are still enough differences to not have to scream "rip off" when two songs have a similarity.

As a sidenote to this: I was reading the wikipedia page for "Funkytown" the other day. Some fool put that "this song is a blatant ripoff of 'The Changeling' from the Doors". They are similar, but it's not a ripoff. Again, songs are bound to repeat themselves, especially in pop music.

Who is screaming rip-off? I asked a ?. Prince is still at his peak of talent. His stuff nowadays may not be as popular as it used to be, but you never lose your God-given gift.

Calm down, and take a breathe. I never said you was screaming anything. I was making a broader statement about these sorts of queries, in general, that come up when two songs sound alike in some fashion. There's another thread right now about a Lipps, Inc. song sounding like "Erotic City" (which is doesn't).

Prince being at his peak now is highly debatable and there is little evidence to back up that claim. And it's another thread unto itself.

Ha, you're funny. It's been debated that Prince was inspired by Laid Back's "White Horse" when he wrote "Erotic City," which is believable since the two are similar. It's also been debated that he came up with the guitar riff on "Alphabet St." from his love of the KC and the Sunshine Band track "Keep It Comin' Love."
