And who was Prince's first bass player in 1978? I think Prince play his own instruments. A One band Show

I wonder what specific talents you think Prince has that are so much better than Andre. Prince is a major pop star in large part because he took credit for Andre's ideas. But anyway, enjoy your Purple Kool Aid. Yeah, well Andre stole from Eddie Hazel. So, I don't necessarily feel sorry for him in that respect. For all the talk of Prince stealing from Andre, he should've been able to prove it or make better music. He did neither. I like Andre a lot, but he was given chances to succeed. A lot of people who were associated with Prince have had successful careers for years after their time with him. Andre doesn't need to prove anything. We already know that Andre Cymone is a major contributor on a lot of the early Prince and Time albums. Prince reworked a lot of Andre's stuff, not just Do Me Baby, and claimed it as his own, more or less. He did that to a lot of musicians, which ultimately led people to believe Prince was more talented than he really is.

Andre was his best friend and he encourage him alot. If that's the case of him stealng their ideas why they didn't get Legal Representation.

It would've been really hard for Andre to prove his case because Prince would've had the high priced attorneys hired by the label. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

It's not about stealing ideas really in a creative setting where friends are openly collaborating. It's just at the end of the day Prince is the only one signed to a contract and he's the boss. Besides it doesn't seem to be in Andre to really call Prince out publicly. Same with a lot of the Revolution too except Wendy and Lisa.

Survivin' In The 80's was brillant. A's whole living in the new wave thing was a genre that did not offer an equitable amount of source material to be inspired by (steal?) as did the more traditional elements that Prince drew primarily from. A was whipping it out like nobody before him, in many ways. Prince had the funk/r&b market cornered. A went was left to continue down that path, but instead forged his own way. And his live show was the bomb. Granted his vocal instrument was not as rich as P.

So everyone seems to be of the consensus (or at least a lot of people) that Prince stole Do Me, Baby from Andre. I'm just wondering if you all know this as a fact or if it's just speculation. Has Prince actually said it or have a number of reliable sources confirmed it? Damon Dickson: Is it hair, a hat, or a dead cat?

Prince would never admit he stolen material from his bandmembers. I would not be suprised either if Andre did in fact wrote Do me baby and others.

He made one hell of a taco the last time I saw him working in LA. I bet Prince cant do that Is this true he works at taco place? I mean nothing wrong to see a brotha working and all but I thought that he would still living comfortably from his work with Jody Watley? I am glad that Andre is finally on facebook and if I have questions I want to ask him he is there I hope to answer them. [Edited 2/15/10 8:28am]

Andre has spoken on the issue publicly. For some reason I can't remember what he said specifically about Do Me Baby, but he did say the concept for The Time was his and that the music was based on his tracks. He also said there are Prince records that he believes feature his playing, without credit, but said it was hard to tell because he and Prince played a style that was so similar.

Yeah I'm sure Prince would never say, but isn't it possible that he didn't steal Andre's ideas. I just think it would be wrong to assume that Prince had done wrong unless it could be proven that he stole Andre's ideas instead of just going on what at least one man is saying. Also, if Prince did indeed steal Do Me, Baby and The Time concept and whatever else, why wouldn't Andre say something "publicly" back then when he could have done something about it? Maybe I'm just a naive Prince loyalist who wants to imagine that he's above doing that but I just don't think you can make a definitive case against him, at least from what I see. They played "Kelly's Eyes" on 107.5 in Detroit this morning. The DJ says afterwards that the reason that Andre sounds so much like Prince is that they were best friends and Prince grew up with him, etc. Then he adds, "or is that Prince sounds like Andre Cymone?" Then he played "Purple Rain."
I had to get out of my car at that point, so I don't know where the conversation went after that. But I was glad to hear a current DJ even discussing the topic, let alone playing a super-old, seldom heard song like Kelly's Eyes, then playing Purple Rain on a contemporary R & B station.

And yes you are a loyalist if you think Prince was above leveraging his position and taking whatever he felt he needed from his band.
