Jimmy Jam Quote

I'm hoping some other Org members can help me out here. I remember once reading Jimmy Jam in an interview discussing how The Time was having trouble learning dance steps for their "777-" song and Prince coaching them. Can anyone let me know where this appeared?

Also: I remember Jam once commenting on Prince teaming with MTV for the Cherry Moon film premiere and implying Prince was freaked out with his career or something...

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't remember where this was..... (maybe Keyboard Magazine?) but I remember him saying that when they first were rehearsing for live shows, P was like "what are you doing with your left hand"? and Jam was like "there's no left hard part on this song" and he was like "well make one..... and dance.... and sing etc.!" and how it really made him step up his game (which is hard to believe that Jam needed to do that at one time! smile )

I always try to watch what he and Monte are doing with their hands on live performances.....to try and match their hands to the various keyboard parts, though it's not always easy to see..... especially since most Time songs often have one high synth note sustained for like 3 or 4 measures during a chorus, plus lots of "horn" stabs.

Heya, Ronin. Nice to see you on here - I believe we are friends on Facebook also.

Not to "expose who you are" so to speak, to the other forum members, but as a huge Death Row Records aficionado, "Have Gun Will Travel" is one of my favorite reads and incredibly well written. I actually made a documentary about 'Pac for the BBC, out in LA a few years back and interviewed various friends/family/associates of 'Pac, so obviously some Death Row folks were a big part of that, and I ended up becoming very good friends with Johnny J before he passed away just over a year ago. If you're interested, I recently made a tribute to Johnny, partially using some of my interview with him that was recorded for the 'Pac documentary. You can check it out here. Are you working on anything new at the moment? Feel free to send me a private message on here or on Facebook if you don't want to say anything in public, this is my profile.

Regarding your question, I want to say that it might have been either an interview with the BBC or with the Minneapolis Star Tribune newspaper. I can't say for sure - my apologies.

Hi Militant:
Thanks for writing and for the kind words regarding HGWT... I'm actually finishing my next Book now, PRINCE: INSIDE THE MUSIC AND THE MASKS, after working on it on and off for about ten years now... And now, during the Legal Edit phase, I'm trying to track down copies of interviews in which Jam:

1) described the Time rehearsal session for their song "777-..."
2) opined on Prince going from not speaking with Rolling Stone to promoting Under the Cherry Moon on MTV
3) offered some opinions on Prince's Around album.
Thanks for writing. RR

Nice!! I was hoping that you might be writing a Prince book. I look forward to it!

Let me know if there's anything else you need some assistance with, and I'll do my best to help out.
