Tony M Compilation So you know how Tony M is awesome, right? And his contribution to Diamonds and Pearls and 0{+> really defined the sound of that era?
Well, I was thinking how cool it would be if I made a compilation of some of the great tracks that feature him, including stuff from Goldnigga. Too bad he wasn't on Exodus, I kinda missed him. Something like: Goldnigga Something this house Funky Comes* Deuce and a Quarter Hey Louie Louie* The Flow (original 8 min version)* Call the Law My Name is Prince Gangster Glam Black MF in the House Push Johnny I've left Willing and Able, Gett Off, and Sexy MF off because he just ain't featured anough. A crime, I know. Unfortunately there aren't too many good quality recordings of those outtakes (*) circulating, so I was thinking of ADDING hiss to the studio releases, just to make it consistent. Any thoughts? Take it - like Clarence said:

Was Tony M really that bad, or was it just the fact that he was with prince? I actually thought he rapped pretty well.

Tony M was really that bad. Sorry.
What other (good) rap artists were doing in 1991 1992 1993: -Dre released 'The Chronic' in 1992. -Erik B and Rakim put out 'Don't Sweat The Technique' in 1992. -Pete Rock & CL Smooth had 'Mecca & the Soul Brother' in 1992. ... this is gonna take forever... -Efil4zaggin - N.W.A. (1991) -Cypress Hill - Cypress Hill (1991) -Naughty By Nature - Naughty By Nature (1991) -Check Your Head - Beastie Boys (1992) -Bizarre Ride II Tha Pharcyde - The Pharcyde (1992) -Daily Operation - Gang Starr (1992) -Enter the Wu-Tang: 36 Chambers - Wu-Tang Clan (1993) -Enta Da Stage - Black Moon (1993) -Midnight Marauders - A Tribe Called Quest (1993) -DoggyStyle - Snoop Doggy Dogg (1993) -93 Til Infinity - Souls of Mischief (1993) -De La Soul Is Dead - De La Soul (1991) I can probably list another 30 CLASSIC rap albums from just those three years, but I think everyone gets it. Almost EVERY rap artist putting out records back then was better than Tony M. By leaps and bounds.

If Prince had used him that way instead of trying to play catchup with rap, it might have worked. And no - not every rap artists was better from that time. Like most people you forget all the crap that was released right alongside the good stuff.

They aren't the same thing. Princes stuff was not even close to hip hop - it was his stuff with "rap" on top of it. The Goldnigga stuff was like old Tower of Power mostly. LOTS of lame rap.LOTS.

Yeah dude I heard most of these albums , but still man, Tony M wasn't making no solo hip hop shit, he was rapping for 10 seconds on a prince track, the shit was allowed to be corny or funny, look at the raps before him, Cat & Sheila E. etc. In that respect Tony M. wasn't that bad, he served his purpose, he wasn't good but he wasn't terrible either.
