Teena was associated and produced by Rick James. She did do a tour with Prince and that is how Prince met Jill jones who was a back up singer for Teena and whose mother was a manager for Teena. As far as I know that is the only connection Teena had with Prince other than her heyday wad the same era ad Prince's the 80's

I think it would be great if they got together. The only problem I see is that they are both head strong and leaders so who is going to be the follower?

I remember back in 86 when Teena's Emerald City album came out (My FAVORITE album by Teena), the first single was the jam "Lips 2 Find U". Anyway, it was rumored that P actually co -wrote the song with Teena. (That bridge DOES sound a LOT like Brown Mark though biggrin ) Another rumor at the time was that Teena's guitarist who called himself "Bendrix", was actually Prince using a moniker....Would have LOVED for P and Teena to have done something together. Especially on THIS album. Bootsy is on the title track "Emerald City" doing his best Hendrix voice...Would have been cool if P could had jumped in on this album.

i asked Teena (via twitter) if she would ever play songs off of Emerald City ever again and she didn't answer. Strange cause she seems to enjoy answering peeps questions left and right. She must really not like discussing that work. lol

I read years ago that Teena vowed to "never" play material from that album. That seems to be the weirdest thing. As good as that album is as a whole....it would transfer so well in a live setting. Obviously Teena has her reasons but it is interesting to me that she simply will NOT play anything from Emerald City

I went to a Congo Square CD release party in Oakland in June and during the Q&A section I asked her about the inspiration behind "Batucada Suite" and "You So Heavy" (my favorite Teena song).
Before I asked the question I said that Emerald City was my favorite album and she looked genuinely taken aback and said "Wow, that suprising for a sista!" She also said that Lenny Kravitz told her it was his favorite album by her.
Also, when I saw her later when she was signing CDs, she said "Hey, it's Miss Emerald City!" (Hence, the screename).
I think for her, people who know that album seperates the hardcore fans from the casual listeners.

The same thing happened 2 me when I saw Joyce Kennedy from Mother's Finest an hour b4 their show started. When I told her I grew up on her 1984 solo album "Lookin For Trouble" and that my favorite from it was "Stronger Than Before", she looked suprised, then she smiled laughed and said "How old are you?!" lol

That's pretty funny. It's cool because maybe some artists don't know just how far reaching their impact is.

That solo kills every time. I could never get sick of it.That's why the rumors about her not playing any songs from that album hurt me so much! This is one song I am DYING to hear live, more than any of the others. But a lot of my favorite Teena songs that have more of a "rock" edge like Robbery, Surrealistic Pillow, Alibi, Revolution and, of course, Once is Not Enough, I will probably never hear live.

I also wish she and Prince would get together on a song, he's my favorite male artist and she's my favorite female artist and it would be magical.

The etheral keys and Nathan East's sick bass is what got me 2 it. Kinda reminds me of Terrence Trent D'Arby's "Lets Go Forward"

That's why a lot of bands trip out when they play live and the audience knows all the words. That's the biggest compliment u can get as a musician, 'cause it means hits or none fame or not, somebody out there is listenin.

I'm one of those people. I don't like to go to a concert unless I know about 90 percent of the material. I knew I was at a Babyface conert once and I knew the words to everything (including the covers he did on Playlist) and the chicks in front of me were getting hella annoyed. biggrin

I understand that, but you know what's my pet peeve? I absolutely HATE it when performers point the mic out to the crowd and let them sing half the damn song. I did NOT pay money to hear some no-good heffas, who think they can sing, belting out your tune. I paid to hear YOU sing it. I hate that with a passion!!

A line or two is all right SOMETIMES, but damn near an entire verse?? GTFOH! Prince, for example, has done it on a number of occasions, and it burns me up. Whenever he or another artist plays Chaka's "Sweet Thing", they always have to have the audience singing it! And they sound God-awful!! I mean, I wanna get paid a lil somethin' somethin' if I'm supposed to be singing some of the shit you're supposed to be singing on that stage! If you're not trying to pay anybody, make sure you do it all by YOURSELF.

I TOTALLY agree with that too! But I think Prince mostly does it well, it doesn't usually go on too long and he picks it up in the right places and frequently biggrin

Yeah, but I've seen him let the ladies sing a little too long on a couple of occasions, too. It's bad enough he doesn't even move/dance anymore when performing, but I gotta hear him let screeching whales take the vocal lead, too?? Oh hayyyl naw!
