Did you listen to Jesse Johnson's Revue? "Be Your Man", Can You Help Me" are pretty much the exact Prince/Time sound. It's hard to dislike those singles if you are into The Time.

Sheilas 3 albums with Prince input are all great. The first 3 Time albums are a must have Pandeminium less so although it has it's moments.

In fact as I type this I realise that I like most of the Protege material. A friend recently copied me a load of stuff that I hadn't heard in ages due to not having a turntable. Albums like The Family, Jill Jones, Vanity 6, are an important part of the canon. I really like Chakas Come 2 My House as well although I know it doesn't get much love round here.

I have almost all of them and they range in quality and listenability, depending on Prince's hand. The best are The Time, The Family, Sheila E., Madhouse, NPG, Jill Jones, Vanity 6, Apollonia 6... even Sheena Easton's songs are pretty good. There are a few good tracks on Carmen's and Mayte's albums as well (although I'll be flamed for that one).

There are many to avoid as well. I don't want to waste my weekend listing the bad ones.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Jessie Johnson isn't technically a protege

But as someone already said, his first album is definately the Minneapolis sound and rocks. Do a youtube search on Jessie and you'll hear/see some good stuff

The Time, What Time Is It?, Ice Cream Castles are a must
Vanity 6 a must
The Glamorous Life, Romance 1600, Sheila E. are a must
The Family a definate must
Mazarati a must
Madhouse a must

Jill Jones should have had 3 album by 1987
She should have had a midway Controversy/1999 album:G-Spot, Baby Your a Trip
a Purple Rain album: All Day All Night,
a Parade album: Mia Bocca
4 Love is from the PR era I believe, but one of my favorites along with Violet Blue and the above mentioned ones
Her album was a makeshift, with cuts from a wide range of Purple eras

to me anything after 1988 just doesn't fit the Prince Canon of music
These album are different sides of Purple Music and at times feel like a response or the other side of the conversation to Prince's albums

Do a google search here, there is a Thread on Madhouse, also look at the Prince Music section sticky Prince albums & eras: Sign o the Times

Madhouse is a protege group that Prince formed around sax man Eric Leads 1987

No one fully knows who the album players are but between the 1st 2 there is Dr Fink Sheila E Levi Eric & Prince

there were videos too and Madhouse opened for the Sign o the Times show
during the concerts Dale Alexander a Minneapolis drummer that played with Prince during 94 East who Bobby Z replaced, was the drummer for Madhouse

Songs from the Family:Yes mirror the music of Madhouse
also R U Legal Yet? Batman outtake sounds similar to Madhouses music

the songs were title by number example: 11 [Babydoll House]

My favorites are:
Sheila
Jill Jones
The Family
Apollonia 6
Madhouse

I can get into the music of the first Vanity 6 but that woman's voice is a crime.
I could never quite get into The Time all that much. They're just ok IMO. boxed

Carmen is a shitty cd but some songs are a guilty pleasure nontheless. lol

And Apollonia's was any better? falloff

Then again, it's not like Apple's was featured on the A6 album all that much; thank God Brenda was around to take the reigns.
Let's have a Menage a Trois!

Sheena Easton's two Prince-written/produced tracks from her The Lover In Me album are to be desired. "101" and "Cool Love", even though Sheena Easton isn't a protegee.

I LOVE(D) Vanity 6

Apollonia couldn't touch her
Vanity was a good frontman, she had the sexy she had the sass and she could have went further if Prince didn't have his issues

V6's version of Sex Shooter blows the A6 version out the water, and I really like the A6 version

She had good chemistry with the Time and Susan & Brenda as well as Prince
