Yeah, I clearly remember when this track was released in 85. I was hyped as hell about it. I kept calling Tower Records and Music Plus to see if they had it in yet because the o.g. release date had been moved back a little. Finally, when it came in, I jetted over there from school and got the 45 of this song. I got home, threw it on the turntable and was.....let down like a muthafucker! I was expecting some Hendrix, fucking it up and turning it out on the axe from Jesse. As bad as a lead guitarist Jesse was/is, I thought for certain Jesse was going to come out hard killin' it on the guitar. I had seen him live with The Time twice before this so I KNEW Jesse was coldblooded. I thought he was going to kill on the axe for no other reason but to answer Prince's guitar work on "Let's Go Crazy" and P's killin' guitar intro on When Doves Cry. That's what Jesse essentially was/is is a guitarist and THAT'S what I wanted to see and hear. But nah....Jesse went straight pop with "Horns" galore all over the track. I was sitting, staring at the turn table, trying to convince myself that Jesse at least had a cool solo in the middle of the song. The middle section came and went so I thought "O.k., well it's at the end. Yeah, that's it!" The end came and faded out. The song is alright, I understood he was keeping it in line with The Time's sound to a degree but I liked the b-side "Special Love" better. Of course, that didn't have a solo in it either. The best track wasn't even on the album and it SHOULD have been. And that's "Free World". That to me is one of my all time favorite tracks released by Jesse. Free World should have not only been on his debut but it should have been the lead off single. And yeah, it has a guitar solo. It's buried hella low in the mix and shit but at least it's there!

Me and my friends used to joke about how long Jesse would solo. Jesse would kick off a solo, the band would go to dinner, go out partying afterwards and stumble in at all hours of the morning and Jesse would still be soloing.

dont get me wrong, i love a good guitar solo(like the one on she i cant resist)

but you gotta have love for a strong groove such as this one. i love the snare drum on the track. the driving beat keeps my head nodding thru the whole track

If U think about Prince rarely showed his lead guitar talent in his beginning albums that much either. Back then most black artist had to show there R&b side more or records wouldn't sell much. U rarely knew Prince could tear a guitar up until u saw him live just like Jesse

That's true. Although P did throw down on his second album with Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad and Bambi. I know he did his thing too on "I'm Yours" but he put em up on Why You Wanna and Bambi. He didn't fuck with any leads on Dirty Mind and Controversy. And a little on 1999 with his solo on Lady Cab Driver. Now after his Dirty Mind album and before Controversy, he killed it on his solo to Get It Up and The Stick on The Time album. Then he threw down hard on his solo to 777-9311. But yeah, he didn't really bring it full scale untill his Purple Rain album. And even that wasn't a LOT of guitar. It was just more than he had previously. You're exactly right with folks not knowing that P could through down on the axe in the early days untill they went and saw him live.

I was shocked when I would c Prince per4rm live he would blow me away with his lead guitar work. Almost as if he was saying. Yeah i know how how to knock all these rockers aside
