I doubt you will get too close to such sounds with the SY77 (or related), even if there are indeed some "classic synthesizer" -banks available for them. Trying to seriously emulate analog synths with FM synthesis isn't probably the most sensible idea though.

To get some idea of what an Oberheim synth would sound like you can always download the vsti demo for OP-X softsynth or just check out the "flash demo" here:

(the vsti can be found from the menus)

It's NOT the same thing as playing a proper analog synth, but yes, it does get close as far as functionality and getting to figure out what the actual unit can do. To be honest, the later Oberheims aren't that versatile, but neither were too many of the other analog polysynths of the same era.

that is a seriously cool demo. Fun!

I've hardly had time to play with my fm synth. I was hoping to learn about synthesis from it - there is one hell of a learning curve though eek
