Wow, it just seems like they should have figured out a new name by now..
I'm seriously starting to wonder if they'll ever break out with a new album.

I'm a big fan, but this is going on much too long sad
Does Prince still have some sort of strong-hold on this not progressing?

Paul is apparently in LA with Susannah now. (Facebook is a wonderful thing).
Remember that they are doing this themselves - not through a label...so after making sure they cover their bills and such by working , then they can make this record. From what I've heard so far - it is worth the wait. At least they don't take out ads saying "coming soon...." wink

My point is that I always thought The Family album was better than Around The World In A Day & P sounded better singing Desire, Mutiny & High Fashion than St. Paul (the bootlegs). So with that being said, I think Wendy & Lisa's influence was just a little overboard (but appreciated). Don't get me wrong some tracks like Raspberry Beret, Pop Life & Mountains (extended) was the shiznit. Around The World In A Day & Parade are unique & artistic but falls in comparison to let's say the Camille album or The Family. And let the record show I love WENDY & LISA & Eroica & most of P's camp's solo efforts.

I don't think it's a Wendy & Lisa influence alone

there were probably a lot of other who had influence and contribution on this album. David Coleman being being one other

It's a direction Prince wanted to take
Because from what I've read most of the band even Wendy & Lisa thought ATWIAD was too drastic a change from PR

I still say, I think Prince after PR had the clout to ask for 2 albums to be released ATWIAD and an album that was more high energy with songs like Our Destiny Roadhouse Garden Go Splash Wonderful Ass Traffic Jam

I just love the various sound that were coming out of Prince's camp:Romance 1600 the Family ATWIAD
I think it was a very good thing to show a bit more diversity and bring in more sounds

By the way the Purple Rush version of Nothing Compares 2 U sounds way better to me than the album. It had that PR vibe a lot more instrumentation felt a bit like God:the Love Theme/Alexis de Paris Both version work though

i feel like ive already read this thread before
folks fighting over THE FAMILY and the name and accusing P of being
punkass/immature etc...for not letting them use it.
Folks talking like THE FAMILY was a huge band tha made countless records
and had many hits.
It was ONE album. The group ended as fast as it was born.
These songs are trademark P minneapolis sounding songs.
If they were such a good band, why no followup lp?
Look how long they have taken to put this current cd out.....were still waiting.....and waiting.... and then fools on here think theyre clever for pointing out that P didnt play everything on the Family album, like the strings or he didnt arrange them or play hornz...yeah, but he did everything else you fool... lol
These FAMILY apologists are worse than the Prince apologists....haha lol

The sound is NOT trademark Minneapolis sound, that is what made it stand out. No one is acting like they had multiple albums or hits.
The strings and horns are another factor that MADE this album stand out - as they were contributions by other artists - as opposed to P telling them what to play. So to not give credit where credit is due makes you a Prince suck up. How is pointing out facts making apologies?
Follow up- to an album that Prince had a tour planned and put it on hold and on hold until they got sick of waiting? Each of the members went on to have successful careers, and have gotten together now to have fun and make new music from what I can see.
As far as waiting for the music - a lot of it is clearly already been previewed - and they are making it with no labels financial support. So it takes time. When did they start - less than a year ago? - with ongoing commitments elsewhere? You try putting a full record from writing to recording to production together in a year. Is Much better than being told something is coming for years on end and not appearing.

The Family didn't make or break Prince. It was his shit that got them noticed, THEY were around to execute HIS songs. They were another backup band or side band that was used to execute P's songs, they weren't a traditional band so to speak. And that's really the case here. Same with The Time & the rest of HIS groups

No - we don't go again. Same crap.
No one said anyone made or broke Prince, No one.
They may not have been a traditional band, but you continue to underplay their input. Do you think Prince write or perform the horn lines? Or the stings? Nope. You just like to keep ignoring the amount of impact contribution by others have on the sound of that album. You say it's all him - I listen and hear it is not. And know it is not because Eric and Clare made me take notice when I first heard it (prior to knowing it was Prince related - I heard it on the radio first- thy used to play several tracks from an album back in the day).
My reason to bother writing any of this is to point out that it is almost never one person in a vacuum, creativity is always those around that inspire and in many instances directly contribute. But for some reason that rational thinking never applies to fans ignorance of facts.
They WANT it to be one way, so it is.
The Time is a whole different story- part of which is Dez and Lisa playing and writing for the first album - like Vanity 6..... boxing

Let's remove the horns & orhestra, what do U have? Again, remove Lisa & Dez (especially Lisa) & see what U have. Let's b4 real. They made have added some spice here & there but P really didn't need them. I really think Lisa & Wendy watered P's music down. CAMILLE vs Dream Factory

Remove horns and orchestra? Something I probably would have dismissed to some extent. At the time plenty of bands brought great tight funk, but these added elements made it have it's own vibe.
I'm not sure how old you are, but what made Prince and his cronies stand out at that time is they approached stuff sideways from everyone else. If not I had a large number of good songwriters and players to choose from.
I think what I assume to be some of W&L's contributions stretched Prince's already amazing abilities. I personally liked the outcome. Progression is what I like in an artist, which is why I've had so much of a problem with the latest offerings. Retread - with very little songwriting to make it listenable.
In the meantime what I have heard of the new Family material has the feel of the original stuff with a new edge. I am excited by that idea. At this point I'm out for some new music to enjoy.

See - I don't know what you mean by Prince "alone". He's always had some influence around him.
I liked him up through Emancipation as a whole. Then bits and pieces till about N.E.W.S.

Yeah, I get that he didn't do it alone but how much input did the Family bring to their album? Outside of Susannah being his muse. The solo songs P had on Purple Rain & Around The World In A Day were better than the group efforts. As the CAMILLE album was better than Around The World In A Day, Dream Factory & Parade. It's what I mean by "alone". Yeah your right there were a lot of funk bands around then but P was gonna different with or without The Revolution. Had he not surrounded himself with Wendy & Lisa's psychodelia, he probably would be a little more understood by African Americans. Not everybody was happy with P's direction with The Revolution (Wendy & Lisa's influence).

Funny that you say that. Many of my black friends I was in college with loved the twists and turns of his music. Don't forget that "black" music was WAY more open that "white" music (I am using a rather loose terminology here...so don't get all pissy about it) prior to all the new jack crap. I disagree about the earlier albums being better - they are ALL good. Lisa was around from early on, and as far as alone go over and read the Andre Cymone interview to read how that stuff was really done. Not alone.
I'm curious how you know the group efforts from "solo" efforts. Do you have an inside track no one else does? Do you think Finks solo on Head made that song terrible? I'd be curious to see what you think is all him. Some of that Camille stuff DEFINITELY has voices other than his on the tracks. So is that not alone?
I'd say his most alone work has been his last few- and it all sounds that way. Created in a vacuum - which is why it sucks (sorry I really could no resist that addition)

i am. His live shows pretty much still blow anyone else away even if I'm not attending. I do watch what I can wink it's his records that I have lost interest in. But I give every last one a listen or more if I can stand it. His talent is not my issue, I'm just hoping he finds that "spark" that he lost (imo) and his writing matures. May never happen, but being a fan I don't give up hope.

nope. he doesn't do them as well live as the Family does. And I saw them do it. Just because you write something great doesn't mean you perform it the best. I really don't care for his NC2U because he overdoes the arrangement. How do you beat Eric's sax at the end of the song? it's CLASSIC.

It's ironic that Prince won't let them use the name "The Family" since he himself stole the name from a once-popular R&B group from the Twin Cities area that he loved. I guess what's OK for him doesn't apply to others, huh?
